I read yesterday that we are deploying one of our carriers (HMS Ocean) in the Thames to "provide operational and air support" during the Olympics, which I thought was a bit overkill...
... but it is being reported today that we are deploying 13,500 military personnel as well. To put that into perspective, we currently have 9500 deployed in Afghanistan. Other measures being taken include rapier air defence missiles and Typhoon fighter jets.
Now I'm all for making the Olympics secure as I'm sure there will be the odd nutcase who fancies his chances at causing death and injury, but seriously, what are we expecting with this level of military deployment? A full scale invasion?

As for HMS Ocean, she's a helicopter landing ship, so they'll be using her for emergency services helicopters etc in the event of an emergency. I also believe she might be one of the command centres in that case. Read somewhere the SAS will be based there for the duration as well.
And most of the troops will be unarmed, they're just extra manpower if anything does happen. Most recent Olympics have had military working in a support role.
Finally, for air defence, well that's only sensible to be honest.

Almost all the security work is being done by MI5 behind the scenes, this is partly a distraction measure and partly for putting on a show on the world stage.

Soldiers can if spotted in time. Seeing a well dressed and groomed local walking towards you with the regular locals is a clue. If cologne is in the air then its a another clue. Give the appropiate warning to keep away till hands are seen open but then one has to look for the guy who's going to remote detonate the bomber incase he changes his mind or is impeded. All the Entry Control Points have Electronic counter measures.

Government ministers like doing things involving the military, the more special forces the better.
Richard Hammond (I think it was him) was on the news yesterday talking about deployment of forces. They love doing it (as testified by Micheal Portillo) and it makes them seem powerful in the eyes of the hoi polloi.

Every country takes pride in their military. Also think of it this way. Since a soldier is paid 24/7 at a set pay rate you really don't have to worry about paying the troop overtime like regular law enforcement...So um...who over their is going to keep an eye on Mattrym...

I think you guys might be getting a little worked up over nothing. Placing Ocean in the Thames gives the military presence a base of operations and a shorter distance to travel (I assume) if they have to respond. I'm thinking of something more like Munich than anything that has happened recently.
