Here we have Frankie playing Luis’ tournament 1750 Imperial Guard list vs. Will with my Wolves and a Land Raider Achilles. This will help to show what the Achilles is really like on the table top. We will continue to play test units from Imperial Armor Apocalypse Second Edition so that everyone out there can see them in action. We will do this whether these units are included into the Bay Area Open 2012 or not, as we just enjoy trying out new things.
One game doesn’t prove anything absolutely, but as you can see, a lot of the hype about the Achilles is pretty overblown. We’ll try it again and see how it plays, but it isn’t that hot, in our opinions. Frankie Immobilized it turn 2 with Vendettas. I think the Caestus is quite a bit better, but hey, that is just my opinion.
What do you all think? Does this video change your opinion on the Achilles or no?

Achilles has a lot of firepower.... thats about it. Can't carry dudes, so meh.
I feel it would perform a lot (lotlot) better in a game against a typical marine army, or anything packing melta weps/ ML's.

If I watched that correctly the only thing it managed to do was move up and get immobilized w/out killing anything? Hats off to those ig psyker battle squad! In the end imperial command had to remove them themselves b/c they were just to much for the wolves to handle

We have been playing the Achilles a lot......and it has under-performed in every single game. It's cool, and definitely good, but not the game winning model everyone thinks it is, honestly.
@Darkcloud
Haha, so true! They were doing too good, and had to be sent back to base!

Hurr! Ogryn Bone 'Ead!

I'm quite new and I'm in no position to critique other players... but damn is leafblower 'Guard ever boring. The first half of the game has almost no movement, just parking and rolling dice at each other? It seems like such a shame to buy transports and expensive soldiers just to have them sit all day. It just boils down to a preference issue, but when I run guard I'm going to have masses of troops running up to secure objectives and firing positions.

What someone online on the other side of the world that you've never met says should never deter you from taking a unit for being either weak or OP. The community is a great place to come for tactics advice, and there is a lot of very sound opinions and idea out there, but at the end of the day, play the game how you want to... Don't worry about the hordes of Dakka descending on your gaming club to arrest you for taking one heldrake or not using a screamerstar. Knowing the standard opinion (and that's all it is) on what is good/bad and conforming to that opinion religiously are two entirely separate things. |

I love my achilles, and I agree that its definitely not as OP as advertised. The guns are good, but you can get equivalent firepower for much less. The only problem I have with it is the fact that it is this nigh unkillable bunker.
If you put a combat squad in it and park it on an objective, you can pretty much count that objective in the bag, you can't even contest it if the player places it correctly. Especially in capture and control, this is a problem. I won a game by just driving the achilles onto his objective, where it sat for three turns with thunder hammers and meltas blazing away at it until the game finished. This can create an nearly automatic draw(at worst) on this if you lack MC or railguns to knock it out.
This is the only problem I have with it, because its pretty balanced otherwise. However, due to 2/3 of the missions being objective based, this could be a fairly significant edge. You could house rule some non-scoring status for any transported units or make it incapable of moving troop models but I don't think that is what you are going for.

@talore
Yup, you have it. Leafblower is a sit and shoot army, hoping to wipe them out before they get to you, army. I agree it is a bit boring if it's your main army. My ig don't play that way, but that's just me. I like mobility, as you said.
@razorlead
I agree there. In all of our test games so far, the achilles has not died, but we've also not really tried to kill it. Once we immobilize it or knock its guns off, we ignore it. It has not killed much either, tbh. It has destroyed a vindicator I believe, and that's it.
I can see it being an issue in cap and control, though, if the other guy doesn't have the tools to destroy it.

I've used the LRA 3 times now, all in Apoc.
Game #1 - survived 2 drop pods worth of combi-melta sternguards, finally killed by a Destroyer blast. Didn't do much as we changed the game from objectives to just kill each other.
Game #2 - helped to take out a baneblade with its 2 multi-meltas and then got chain-fisted to death by some terminators because I forgot to move it. Lol.
Game #3 - Immobilized on Turn 1 by a Barbed Hierodule before I could even move it. Was then ignored the rest of the game.
Overall, don't expect it to be ultra-killy-killy. Expect it to be used more as an objective-bunker or contester.
BTW, here's a picture of my converted LRA against Janthkin's nids. It's not painted yet.
