Subject: Strategic plan for Ork List building general question

Here's the reason behind the question. I started 40k playing orks. I had a theme in mind and did it. Since, I've tried to branch into marines and tau. None seem really as fun as the orks. I certainly win more with the Salamanders, but neither grab me the way I thought they would. So I'm back to Orks and I'm looking for direction. I bought a second AoBR set for my Salamanders and to bring my slugga mob up to full strength. Yesterday I bought a battle wagon, but I'm uninspired and it went straight to the closet - unopened. So, now I have new projects on the desk but no inspiration. Unpainted now is a full set of AoBR boyz, nobz and koptas (gave away the warboss) and an unopened Battlewagon.
I have a 2500 pt Kan wall list now.
My question is: What's next? BW rush, Mech, KoS, True Tide (156 boyz) etc?
Here's what I have that's painted:
HQ
AoBR Warboss
Bikerboss (boar boss conversion to fit the theme)
BM w/ KFF x2
BM w/ SAG
TROOPS
90 Boyz (mostly shootas)
2 Forge Truks
FAST
3 AoBr Koptas
10 Warbikers (boar boy conversions to fit my theme - count as)
ELITE
20 (appx) variously kitted Nobz incl 1 PB
12 Lootas
HEAVY
9 Kans (1 each)
NEED INSPIRATION!!!! Automatically Appended Next Post: sub question. has anyone made movement trays for orks?
I was thinking a pentagon with an ork in the middle (6 per tray and keep them 2" apart...

Well for a BW rush you will want 3+ Battlewagons. It depends on how much spam you really like. You can include some Buzzkoptas and your Warbikers in a list like that if you want, with some Lootas for fire support. If you would prefer just a straight BW/Trukk rush, I had a list like this that was pretty fun to play. It wont win all the time, there are too many Nobz and some other things you could adjust to put in other units. Anyways, take a look might help you get some motivation.
HQ (190pts)
Big Mek
Cybork Body, Choppa, Kustom Force Field
Warboss (95pts)
Cybork Body, Power Klaw
Troops (1050pts)
Nobz (Troops)
Painboy
Battlewagon
Big Shoota, Kannon, Deff Rolla, Red Paint Job
Nob
Choppa, Cybork Body
Nob
Choppa, Cybork Body
Nob
Big Choppa, Cybork Body
Nob
Big Choppa, Cybork Body
Nob
Cybork Body, Power Klaw
Nob
Cybork Body, Power Klaw, Waagh Banner
Nob
Bosspole, Cybork Body, Power Klaw
10x Boyz
Nob
Bosspole, Power Klaw
Trukk
Big Shoota, Red Paint Job, Reinforced Ram
10x Boyz
Nob
Bosspole, Power Klaw
Trukk
Big Shoota, Red Paint Job, Reinforced Ram
18x Boyz
Nob
Bosspole, Power Klaw
18x Boyz
Nob
Bosspole, Power Klaw
Heavy Support (260pts)
Battlewagon
Big Shoota, Kannon, Deff Rolla, Red Paint Job
Battlewagon
Big Shoota, Kannon, Deff Rolla, Red Paint Job
So...3 Wagons, two Trukks. Just try to roll up on the enemy as fast as you can to get the Boyz into the fight. 1 BW contains the Big Mek, one contains the WB with Boyz, the other contains the Nob squad.

Not sure about the movement trays, sorry. Battlewagon rush is a form of mechanized, much like kan wall is a modification of green tide. The battlewagon rush is devastating, played properly. With 1 battlewagon and two trukks and warbikes, you can field a reasonable 1k list. You need about 2-3 more for some larger games. Last 1500 point game I ran 3 battlewagon mobs with a full squadron of 12 bikers and 14 lootas. It was extremely successful. My std wagon runs at 130 points with a deffrolla, AP, BS, and GR. Don't disembark too soon. I ran 2 wagons up to a demon prince(1 wound already), unloaded 40 pistol shots gangsta style, then finished it off with a small unit of lootas, sparing my boyz the fury of a couple long fang units(4 player FFA). Do some research and have fun. What kind of inspiration are you looking for?

@Brother T:
That's exactally it. I was kinda thinking BW rush. Do you think it's the most fun?
So I'd buy 2 more wagons, and have all the rest of the models already. I'd probably buy another box of Lootas though to bring it up to full strength. Are your Rollas Forge World, GW or scratch built?
Thanks bro,
DrG

One GW rolla.....others scratch built, for economics. I like BW rush/mechanized because I believe it to be the strongest build. You also get to play around some. Sometimes I run a unit of 15 burnas in a wagon, or nobz/meganobz of course. Warbikes are fantastic support....in fact, mine are usually primaried as targets because they have dished out so much punishment, and will do so unless depleted. Sluggas causing 2 wounds to a demon prince was hilarious. Fast attack choices can also include squadrons of rokkit buggies, and suicide koptas, so don't be afraid to mix it up and see what works for you.

BT,
Speaking of warbikes. How do you play them. One wound or two? FAQs left it open I think didn't they? Our FLGS house rule depends on who I play... (mainly if they have an ork army back home) lol.
Regarding Deffrollas: I saw a really great "wood chipper" scratch build on this site.
Do you proxy meganobs and burnas or do you have the models?
Thanks,
G

Due to several publishing errors, the Warbikers have 1 wound and 2 wounds listed t different places in the Codex, unit description, FOC, and last page index. The correct version is 1 for Warbikers and 2 for the Nob.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time. |

As for lacking in inspiration bud, why not build ($ permitting of course) buy a couple of chimerae & the looted wagon upgrades & convert them to battlewagons like a friend of mine did since he didn't care for the battlewagon model. Then you can just have some fun kitbashing the battlewagon & 2 chimerae & your bitz box. Hell, I'll even let you troll through my bitz box if you wanted.

As for the most fun, it depends on play style and mood. I play for the challenge against others, and to say things in a gutteral cockney accent('old on to the pin.....frow the uhva part).
The way I see it, orks are a highly destructive ablative army that does best(normally) in CC. The best way to get there is being mechanized, and the most efficient way to do that with a large mob that can take most opponents is with battlewagons. Sun-Tzu preached mobility second, right after intelligence. I figure if I know my opponent and his list, I've got the first covered. Is it the most fun? For me, yes. More options, more tactical possibilities. Being able to move allows me to take the initiative as opposed to reacting to a more mobile force. I need options(that's why checkers is boring), it's my nature, so I prefer mobilized, and it proves to be the most fun. Fun typically comes from play style. Now, sometimes I feel the need for a change, so I played marines a few times, and my friend agreed that I converted to shooty without a hitch.

One wound. The actual entry on page 46 is correct. Nobz with 1 wound in the army list and warbikes with 2 in the summary are both incorrect. It's 1 and 2, and I don't know why deffkoptas get 2 when they get the typical bike/jetbike toughness bonus. I'd be tempted to accept the wound loss for them being 10 points cheaper.
Right now, I proxy the MANZ if I play them. I can't afford the insane prices of them. One of my modeling projects is a series of mega-armor through the ages.....like the Mk's of marine powered armor. I'll start with a nob in an armored "barrel" with shoulder straps and go from there, up to the current style.
I have some burnas, and sometimes borrow some more or proxy. I have some blood bowl orks that I am about to convert into burnas, and am sorely tempted to give them bottles and torches for a few laughs.
As for inspiration:
Start naming your bosses, big meks, and even nobz. What clan is your warband? Warboss Bonecrusha is rarely ever fielded(point efficiency), but his warbands are often led by Big Mek Kocknokka(Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back anyone?) who is a converted KFF Big Mek with a hand larger than his head holding a light saber.
My boyz started as Evil Sunz, but in my first game after returning to 40k, I made a strategic retreat into cover for saves and survived to control the objective. Blood Axes they were. Each unit bears a different camo theme(helps so much in CC). Modeling is part of my motivation.
Hope this helps =)
