Hello oracles. I was thinking about making some movement trays for my ork green tide. I was wondering about what y'all thought about the legality of such an idea. I was originally thinking about it from the idea of convenience as moving 150 orks can try the patience of even the nicest of adversaries in a friendly game. Each tray would be shaped like an equilateral pentagon with a boy at every apex and one in the middle as well. Each base would be 2" apart and removable from the tray for the purposes of wounds, pile-ins etc. Then I was thinking that it might give me an unfair advantage over pie plate throwers (like the much reviled IG or the cute little Tau-frogs). Ideas? How would you play it?

EXAMPLE:

......................o
.................o...o...o
...................o....o

Thanks,
G

I do something similar but a bit more flexible in my opinion anyway.

#1 glue metal washers to the bases, this #1 adds some weight to plastic models so they feel more solid and also slide around a bit less

#2 there are these magnetic strips that you can buy at hardware stores that I end up using double sided tape to put on top of some cardboard. Mine are bout 1 inch wide so it helps.

#3 your men are now magnetic and can be moved around in the same formation without bothering to remeasure the whole time and an be killed individually. Pile in however can still be problematic.

This likely should go to general or maybe even painting modeling? Not sure if it's really a rules interpertation question.

So all of those circles are in coherency with the center? In that case, I could hit 5 orks with a large blast. Perhaps you'd be better off with a stacked conga lines, where each ork is in coherency only with the person in to his sides. Let me see if I can illustrate what I mean. Dashes represent coherency. Dots represent spacing just a little more than 2".

..o-o-o-o-o..
o................o
..O-o-o-o-O..
o...............o
..o-o-o-o-o..

So each "wave" would be separated from the one in front by about 2.1", but almost no ork is within 2" of more than 2 other orks. This maximizes your chance of getting everyone into assault, but minimizes your losses to pie plates. The capital O's are within 2" of 3 orks, but placing a blast there has a very high chance to scatter off of your squad entirely.

Some tournies would not allow anything under the base (washers or trays). But for most gaming most of the time, sounds great to me.

Not washers? I use them to weigh down bases on unbalanced/top heavy units.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

Indeed, I know quite a few people that use washers to give some stability to their units. Often, they aren't even visible. Are your tournaments really that strict?

why not washers? It's not increasing height of my models at all (hollow base, the washer fits completely inside) I don't see what would be wrong with that. Any specific tourny that said that? (so I can avoid like the plague)

i dont really see a problem as long as it does not prevent other models from achieving base contact with you, or prevent allow movment issues.

Moving around terrain is going to be the biggest issue, although close combat will be somewhat problematic as well.

Something else that I have seen players do occasionally is intersperce 60mm bases with 3 models on them amongst the unit. As for the old 2-to-a-base Guard heavy weapon teams, anything that affects the base affects all 3 models on it, and in return you get easier movement in quantities. Not strictly legal, but it works if your opponents are reasonably open-minded.

I've seen trays used for horde orks and IG. It can be a good solution to speed up their play in a limited timeframe. moving around terrain can be a serious issue, and of course you need to remove from the trays once you get into assault.

I found the easiest way was to just not play horde armies. Also saves on painting tons of the same model. But that's just me.

@darth spader: very funny...

The reason I was thinking the pentagon was because it could be used to move the group through and around terrain. They would accomidate 6 models and 6 is a divisor to both 12 and 30. Probably the 2 most common squad sizes. The plan was some form of magnets, blue tac, or something.

I am making some for my orks but rather than 1 big tray - i am aiming for trays of 5-8 boyz - makes the issues of assault and terrain easier.

Amongst friendly games - nice idea!

Amongst any other sort of game - go play Fantasy Warhammer, otherwise zero tolerance.

Would be nice to see some pics too!

How about washers? I still don't have an answer yet. Never heard of anyone banning for washer under the base before but apparently it does exist?

Would that mean my taller than normal cadians, Krieg troops from forge world are also banned? I can also field a whole army of steel legion that are smaller and mostly hunched over too. HB teams have like a 0.5' elevation. Even lower than crouching troops!

I've never heard of anyone anywhere banning any kind of weight that doesn't alter the height of your bases and I don't see why anyone would

Did you know? The Reach belongs to the Forsworn.

Have you run into trouble with your Kreigs and tall Cadians? I can understand people taking issue with short troops, as they are harder to hit, but I wouldn't be offended as an opponent if you choose to handicap yourself for rule of cool.

As one of your opponents I'd have absolutely no problem w/ movement trays for your mobs personally. To be honest, it'd cut down on my waiting time too lol. At the tournament against Jared's Orks (who ran absolutely nothing but boyz & nobz BTW) the reason we ran out of time before we were down was waiting for him lol.

Washers , as long as they didn't increase the base size - are a great idea - I use AU 5c pieces - means the odd 'table bump' doesn't tend to knock over you nicely painted, somewhat 'top heavy' pieces..

If I couldn't play a game with cool troops, I might as well not play the game at all =)

I'm pretty sure that even if my faction was considered to beneath the nether regions of some wildlife critters, I think I'd still play it if it was sufficiently cool as I've never won a tourny and doubt I ever will so the rule of cool is fine by me! Moral victory!
