Does anyone know of a spray that (from actual experience not from guessing or what it says on the label) that matches boltgun metal? I ask cuz I'm eating through pots of it pretty quick building my Iron Warriors & correspending Iron Legion traitor guard armies.

Chain mail by The Army Painter looks really similar to bolt gun after a wash with badab black.

Badork Magthugs 2000Pts WAAAGH Wins: 23 Loses: 4 Draws: 4
Ork Tournament Wins: 2
Purge the Unclean 5000Pts Wins: 33 Loses: 7 Draws: 5

Can't argue with that.

at one point i had an actual spray can of boltgun from gw, though i've no idea if they still make it- i didn't entirely like the finish it had though when it came to painting on top of it.

They stopped making the GW one years ago, I miss mine.... The Army Painter one with wash is the best solution, tiny bit more effort but better than regular paint.

Well since my airbrush uses propellant, the weather hasn't been very conducive to such. Plus, it still eats up the pricey little pots of boltgun metal.

I might suggest a can of Krylon Chrome Spray paint. It doesn't go all nice and chromey, rather it looks like silver metal flake paint.

Try that out, followed by a wash of Badab Black should, in my head anyway, work out pretty well.

I'll try it out tomorrow myself after I get out of work if you'd like, I've already got the can of Krylon sitting at my station.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Lemme know how it works, I think I've got a can stuffed somewhere in my workshop so if it turns out well I may have to dig it out.

Alright, experiment has been conducted, and here are my findings:

The materials used:
Krylon Black primer (for both contestants)
Boltgun Metal
Badab Black
Krylon Brilliant Silver Spray
Spoiler:

1 bit was primed with Krylon black, and was coated in a quick, no attention to detail, spattering of Boltgun Metal (left). The other bit was also primed with Krylon black, but was then coated with Krylon Silver Spray, followed by a quick, no attention to detail, spattering of Badab Black (right):
Spoiler:

Findings:
Can Boltgun Metal be reproduced? Possibly with more coatings of Badab Black, but Brilliant Silver by Krylon is too bright. Maybe, rather than Krylon Brilliant Silver Spray, 1 of the following would be a better contestant:
Krylon Brushed metal
Krylon Premium Metallic "Silver Foil"
Rustoleum Metallic Spray "Satin Nickel"

I wonder why GW stopped the coloured sprays, cant see how they can be a bad thing really.

Well, IIRC they were horribly priced & all but black & white were in small cans for said horrible prices. Even now the black & white are horribly priced honestly.
