Can some one help me, please? I have been playing the game now for almost a year and I still don't understand all of it.
here is an example. I have 30 (6 wide, 5 deep) Grave guard charge 40 dwarf warriors (10x4). the combat stays for a turn and on my turn there is only 2 grave guard left. but they are centered on his unit. d=dwarf, g=grave guard
dddddddddd
-------gg-------
I try to charge with my 30 ghouls (again 6x5) and my opponent told me my Grave Guard must slide down, before charge moves, in order for the ghouls to fit. I asked him for the rules on it and he told me that it is the only way to maximize.
How should this have been played? If I wasn't supposed to slide down and then combat ended without either of the grave guard dying, do I need to slide down then?
Help please. Also page #s would be appreciated.
Thank you

Your friend is incorrect.
Nothing in the rules allows you to shift grave guard around at that moment.
The charging ghouls maximize as much as they can. If both sides survive the fight, both sides could do a combat reform to bring more models into the fight. That's the only way to "slide", and it's at the end of combat, not during the charge.

Ok, thank you. another question: is the combat reform required or can i not reform and have less models to attack with?

you are not forced to reform to add models if that is what you were asking. You are allowed to do it if you so wish.

But, if I understand the above correctly, you are forced to maximize base-to-base contact with your front ranks. You just don't have to increase frontage. Or I may be off on that one.

Yeah you don't have to increase your frontage, just slide to maximize.

If you choose to reform, you cannot reduce the number of models fighting.
You may choose to just sit tight and not reform.
The dwarf player may choose to reform.
Winner may always reform, loser has to pass an Ld Test to reform.
If both players want to reform, dice off to see who reforms first.
The dice off is an important rule. If you hit an opponent that is really wide, you can reform to prevent him from narrowing and ranking up.

I thought in both cases you had to pass a Ld test, just in the case of the loser this was modified by the combat result.

No, the winner gets a free, no test reform.

There is no sliding. Maximizing happens when you charge; your free wheel must be used to ensure that the maximum possible amount of models in the charging unit will base the maximum amount of models in the charged unit.

You can indeed slide with a combat reform ever since the latest BRB FAQ.
