Hi there,

I got some Marines for Christmas and have been looking around for chapter colour schemes to paint them up as, though I'm struggling to decide on which to go with. Just wanted to get a thought from Dakka on the chapters out there that have great colour schemes and background. I've done a spot of reading through 40k wiki, and for some reason can't acccess Lexicanum (my internet connection sucks, it's taking me ages to pull a page up)

I'm thinking of making a BA successor chapter, any thoughts?

I say play Aurora Chapter

They like tanks. A lot. They are best known for armored spearheads...and thats pretty much all the info GW has given about them. So I built a BA list with them focusing on predators and vindicators, backed by fast - moving assault marines. Check out my blog in sig for pix of the color scheme.

They are an Ultramarines Successor chapter, so of course I have a codex marine force painted in the same scheme.

edit - I even made a step by step post on how I paint one of the Assault Marines I use, if you wanna check it out :

Lamenters, any of the Angels *enter shade of red here* chapters. I might say that a good chapter would be Angels Encarmine, as I never see anyone play them and a couple of their units are quite unique in colouring (SG and DC)

Cheers Horst, very cool job on those!

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I wanted to steer clear of greens and blues (I use green, purple & gold in my DE and don't want to do a anything that could be mistaken as a smurfs force!)

Kind of liking the templars of blood... Maybe a silver base coat with a million coats of baal red over the top...

ah! That would definitely rule out the Aurora Chapter then, if you wanna steer clear of green

Could always go with blood ravens... I like their color scheme more than the blood angels one.

I've always liked the Eagle Warriors (halved blue and white). But if you want to avoid any blue, there are Storm Giants (cream/bleached bone colored), Exorcists(red), or Hawk Lords (purple ftw).

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

@ Horst - Blood Ravens are sounding like they could be a winner. I didn't think I'd go for one of the more well known chapters but I can't get that red & bone colour combo out of my head. I've found the Blood Drinkers chapter on 40k wiki since though and quite like the fluff behind them... reckon I could end up going for a fuse of the 2, we shall see!

@ Veteran Sergeant - yeah I've always admired the half and half armour schemes though I don't think my paiting skills (read: patience) are quite up to that level yet! I did stumble across the Exorcists too though was put off by the chapter insignia as I'd have to freehand that I want to be able to churn these out relatively quickly (I collect DE too, but take ages painting these so want something visually captivating yet simple to do). Would have gone purple, but that's the base colour for my DE so fancy something a bit different. Like red, which is a million miles away from purple obviously

You know, even though blood ravens are kinda well known, you don't see many of them on the tabletop...

And do they still get to have Sanguinary Priests with jump packs?

I made this guy for the fun of it and want to include him (he will be stripped of current paint and tidied up)

You can use any codex you want to represent any army you want, as long as you follow WYSIWYG.

You can use an army painted in Ultramarines colors with the Blood Angels codex. Hell, if your doing Ultramarines 8th company (all assault marines, according to the Codex Astartes) then I argue your being more adherent to the fluff to use the blood angels rules!

You can paint your army however you want. The only thing that matters is that what units are what is CLEAR to your opponent. I play Aurora Chapter, which is a codex chapter. I use codex blood angels to represent their 8th company. This means I don't have "sanguinary priests", I have apothecaries, like this guy -

As long as everything is VERY CLEAR, paint job doesn't mean diddly

That's cool and fair, I just wana try & tick all the boxes without having to explain everything in detail to opponent first, ie, I don't want to follow the standard codex, and then chuck in Sanguinary Priests.

I should point out that I don't have either codex's... are apothecaries allowed jump packs as an option for codex chapters or is that BA specific?

No, you can't even take apothecaries in codex chapters, unless they are part of a command squad... and even then, you can only mount them on bikes. No jump packs allowed, no Terminator Armor allowed, its pretty restrictive.

Blood Drinkers it is, they fit the iconography, I get to play about with the BA codex, use the Sanguinary Priest with JP model I built up, yet not well known enough to restrict me having a bit of me own fun with 'em.

Right, need spray paint!

Under the couch

Despite being shown in the BA codex (as they are a successor of the BA) the Blood Drinkers aren't really a good match, as they are a strict Codex Chapter, organisationally.

Yeah, that sucks, I noticed that on a re-read, reckon I'll just go with a custom chapter, be much easier

Still, I like the Blood drinkers, they'd be a great army to paint up!... in fact I may even........ No! I can't, i have way too much to paint!......

how about the Revilers? a very cool chapter and very far away from your 'usual' scheme!

Storm giants are also pretty damn cool as are the Emperors spears, or you could use my black recipe for any black armoured chapter? the dark hands are also different to what you usually see on table!

maybe even a re emergance of the Marines Exemplar! :-)

You could also go over to Bolter and Chainsword and use their Chapter Name Generator.
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/liber/CantinaChapterCreator.html

With it you can come up with some interesting names for chapters like the Celestial Hippos or the Omega Moose chapters.
Good for a laugh if nothing else.

Ah go on! You know you want to! You can never have enough projects on the go at any one time! Lol

I looked at the Revilers, they didn't grab me immediately though I have the urge to go back and check 'em out again. I have a few of the AoBR snap together marines so I reckon I'll do a test of different schemes, including Blood Ravens (love the red & bone), something else & something else (likely my own scheme, I like the idea of a silver base coat washed with red to try and get a proper metallic red shine)

I lol'd, did consider this, though isn't it your chapter? I haven't actually looked it up

Really noobbomb? You suggested the army you're currently collecting?

I'm kidding, you're cool.

Anyway, look on B&C at their name generators and marine painters, namely V5 Beta and V8

PMSL! That's brilliant! As it happens I do have a contemptor dread that could be sent out on day release if required, currently with heavy bolter and pf with flamer though these are magnetised should the borrower wish to purchase any other arms separately...?

Let me know though as it needs re-assembling and painting after I got fed up with my lack of yellow painting skill!

Figured I'd try to be less specific with my tick list in the hope of settlign on a Chapter, so far I've narrowed it down to:

Tauran
Sons of Orar (my original choice)
The Shadow Warriors
The Red Suns (or the Black Suns)
Order of the Sword
Divine Death (Brother Oryx's custom chapter from B&C, though probably too detailed for my current abilities)
White Dragons
White Panthers
Angels Encarmine (purely as BlapBlapBlap says they're rarely seen!)
Blood Ravens
Bright Host
Brotherhood of Baal
Crimson Guardians

There's likely a few others that I've missed off... how's that for a "short list" lol!

Decision made, Brotherhood of the Sword.

Custom chapter inspired by one of a similar name.

Fluff

A secretive chapter of marines that are directly involved with the Ordo Hereticus. Formed by the High Lords of Terra following the horus heresy to root out all forms of disloyalty to the emperor. They fight for the betterment of mankind.

The geneseed of the chapter was created through the combination of blood samples from each of the progenitor chapters, with the intention of taking all the benefits of each legion. This wasn't successful however, with the chapter taking its biggest influence from the blood angels.

Instead of companies, the chapter is organised in to orders, each headed by an inquisitor.
