So, today I was filling in some bubbles on my new Firbelly with GS and I saw that on the green stuff package it has warnings on how it is apparently poisonous and is extremely harmful to aquatic animals. I'm slightly concerned about ingesting this stuff/getting it in my eyes or other such terrible things on accident. Is the packaged warning just a load of legal gak or is there a potential health risk? How poisonous really is the stuff? Is it a terrible idea to eat something/drink something while you work/ soon after working with the stuff?

I attempted to use my Google foo but I couldn't find anything.

I have used it and afterwords eaten something without washing my hands and I am still kicking... I just wouldn't eat it and if you are super worried just wash your hands and you should probably be fine.

IMO the disclaimer is there to save their butts, not to proclaim any real health risks. I've used it and eaten without washing and survived to tell the tale.

I really doubt there is anything to worry about with it, but perhaps don't sculpt a castle for your fish out of it.

Okay, thanks for the heads up guys, at least now I can not worry about accidentally poisoning myself unless I eat the entire package.

even if you ate it, I think the toxicity and the half life of it wouldn't be an issue, as you'd likely pass it before you got very sick.

This is the case with most industrial pesticides, you could drink a gallon of the concentrate and not get sick because the toxicity is low(designed to kill insects, not people) and you end up peeing it out before it has time to affect you.

Honestly, if you're stupid enough to want to ingest it all, then get thee to a headshrinker.

Can't be any more poisonous than Mechite red, ugh. I do all my red highlighting with it, and after a couple tastes of it, it really makes me queasy, ugh.

Probably work

I wouldn't sweat any residue left on your hands, but I wouldn't go around eating the stuff either. I work on it with bare hands, frequently eat while modelling, and I'm sure I've rubbed my eyes at least once or twice having recently touched the stuff and I'm not dead yet. The MSDS also describes it as a potential skin irritant, but I've never noticed that either.

One assumes common sense applies. Not too poisonous, wash your hands to be on the safe side and don't treat it as the special of the day come lunchtime.

I have heard the poison can build over a few years if you don't wash your hands before you eat. Although it is probably just paranoia or legal.

Well, just keep it away from pregnant women since (according to my ex-wifes OBGYN) they can often crave clay & any toxicity aside, it's too expensive for someone to eat it

I wouldn't exactly call this smart, though. Lots of things have degrees of toxicity that takes time to accumulate. Do you or your friend have lead pipes for your drinking water, too? That won't kill you instantly, so you should be fine.

This

it's like a packet of Nobby's nuts having 'WARNING: MAY CONTAIN NUTS, NUT TRACES AND NUT PRODUCTS' and 'PRODUCED ON MACHINERY THAT ALSO PRODUCES NUTS.'

It's because some idiot might actually be dumb enough to eat it, thinking, mhh! that looks tasty! OR someone's child might eat it.

If someone does eat it, they can simply say 'not our fault, we gave adequate warnings'

Legally speaking, one can never assume such.

"Common sense" is remarkably uncommon these days, judging by the amount of personal injury resulting from utterly stupid behaviour.

With the original warning being in aquatic conditions and limit education of chemistry and polyurethanes (which GS is similar to probably... again no idea on it), water is great at breaking things down. I can make a polyurethane with great chemical resistence, but will break down when submerged in water after awhile. That is probably why the warning comes in.

I wouldnt intentionally eat a packetful, but Im sure the odd bit wont harm any one. Just keep it away from children and animals... And The Aquatic thing is because if you fully submerge it it goes really gooey, and would cause problems for your pet mermaid.

With what chrome dog said about common sense, it is very true. We had this paralised chick come to our school and tell us how she did it... She did it by jumping from the 3rd story of a building, she was trying to get to a tree that was 8 metres away. She was odviously drunk as she told us. But not even alcohol can make you that stupid. 8 fething metres. Back on topic, just don't eat it.

She was just telling us not into do stupid gak too end up like her. The school organized it but because it was that extreme we all laughed it off.
