Hey,

Just started using a new way of painting a Marine. Instead of just ulramarine blue I base coated heavily watered down regal blue. After that, I slopped badab black on it. Then I painted a 50/50 mix of regal and ultramarine blue and left the other coat of paint in the details. So how did I do?

You did well. I think most people do that these days:

Base coat
Wash
Clean up with base coat leaving wash color is recess
Paint final color
Highlight

That gold color doesn't come up in the picture. Maybe taking another one in white light/outdoor?

I've got to say, you have nailed your blue technique. You have a strong foundation to work on, great job. The gold is slightly bland, but still top notch. One more layer of highlighting and I think you will be set there too. You have just about mastered the basic marine.

I think the only thing you can do from here is work on details. Heat discoloration on the end of the flamer is always a nice touch. Some weathering, possibly chipped armor if you want to go that direction.

But you have nearly mastered the basic marine. Great job.

How do you weather without making it look like you used to much wash?

Weathering is a whole huge topic. A few options are:
# use weathering powders or ground up pastels. Mix them with water or thinner to make mud. Use a brush to apply them dry to make dust and dirt effects. Mix them with thinner, lightly flick it on, then spray with thinner to make light, running rust.
# Oil paints make amazing washes that act very differently from acrylic washes. You can thin it as much as you desire, and it sucks into cracks like it has a mind of its own. It also goes great over flat surfaces, which acrylic washes don't do so well. Best of all you apply it after you varnish seal and even after it is dry you can clean it off your miniature if you don't like the look. While getting a whole oil paint setup would be a pain, it is easy to get some thinner and two colors to weather with.

Weathering is not just adding wash. It extends to chips and damage and rust as well as just a layer of grime.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Looks great. I like the deeper, but not overly dark, blue. It's simple, but incredibly clean and on the tabletop, clean is almost always better than complex.

Veryveryvery nice. I love the metals. They're done very well.

I like the lack of straight ultramarine blue. The mix is very consistent and ...'blue'. Good job. Simple and effective paintjob.

That marine has a targeter and a flamer...

I love the blue. Nice work.

I'd lik to see the flamer shroud painted a brss/gold to break up the monotone look of the flamer's metal.

Awesome mini. Clean and simple, just like how I paint my space wolves.

Brilliant paintjob, well done! Looks perfect for a 'fresh-out-of-the-factory' Ultramarine. As others have said though - regarding weathering - there is much more involved than simply applying a wash, so if you want to do as good a job on weathering as you've done on this then read up on various methods, see which ones you like and give them a go.

Very crisp and clean. Have you thought about some hard edge highlighting in a dark or light gray on the weapon?

I will but the grey I have is to bright in my opinion. I will have to mix in some black. Right now I am working on my command squads Standard bearer in the same way. I can't free hand to save my life so I am having trouble with what to do with the Standard.
