Hi Dakka!

I’ve been a silent follower of other peoples work on here for years & figured I’d finally contribute to the community.

Why I’m starting This Blog:

Like all good hobbyists I’ve started idea after idea coming up with something new half way through that has just left another unfinished project on the shelf, I’ve wanted to get an army finished for so long I hope putting progress on Dakka will help! With the help of the manger of my local GW who knows I’m a hobby fail when it comes to finishing an army I’ve put together a small 750 point list. (I’ll post the list once its final)
A side note I need to say I’m not great with spelling either I’ll spell check things & try to get things right the best I can but please forgive me in advance for poor spelling or grammar. Most of the time I’m in front of a machine it’s to do something with the other part of my brain so this whole typing properly thing may take some getting used to.

My main interest in the hobby is modelling / converting/ kit bashing I can’t help but look at a kit / set of sprus and see stuff that isn’t actually supposed to be there. I have not painted anything properly in around 3 years. Just built and accumulated unfinished projects.

I have a few surprises install for you all but all in good time there’s plastic to de –spru and bases to prepare!

Sons of Asgard

I’ve been thinking of doing an Asgardian Army since I sat in the cinema to watch Thor last year, the Intro to that movie blew my mind. The grandeur captured in CGI of the Asgardian citadel really did make my jaw drop – combine that with a Patrick Doyle soundtrack enough said I left the cinema least to say inspired to create the sons of Asgard chapter !

The Chapter won’t be strictly following any one codex nor will it follow exact Norse mythology but hopefully you’ll be able to see where I have taken inspiration for the army from in appearance and probably the names of characters etc.
I recently purchased some resin bases from a company online & to be honest was not all that taken back by them, don’t get me wrong they are cool but they did not have the effect I needed for this project and thought I'd give it a shot myself!

These are all test poses & nothing is permanently stuck down yet/ I still need to clean up the models. I’ve used anvil shoulder pads but I think I’ll be creating my own for the rest of the army but I love how the bulk of these shoulder pads helps the marines not look like gorillas with terminator arms on normal marines haha.

Close Up of a single Vanguard

Vanguard & Librarian

Dreads!

The effect I’m going to be going for is a jagged ice glacier to simulate how Jotunheim was brought to life in the Thor movie! I’ll get a bird’s eye view of them undercoated this weekend maybe even some fully painted!

Oh by the way the dreads are not in the 750 point list I just have bigger things planned for in a couple of weeks and could not help but do some tests!

I’ll also be trying to convince my good lady into letting me use her mighty cannon and new macro lens to take images of this project. I only have a small digital camera that’s quite old now. Hopefully you’ll get a good feel for the army from these images.

Anyway let me know your thoughts guys & thanks for reading!

What do the mould lines of powah do? Are you going to create special rules for them?

Anyway, I love the army idea and I am looking forward to more! BTW are those shoulder pads from Anvil Industry? I was going to buy some for my Spartan Ultramarines and now I regret not doing so.

I love the look and feel to this army and can't wait to see some painted, subscribed, bring on MOAR Sons Of Asgard!

And TBH I didn't really like Thor the movie!
Maybe it was because someone told me it was mind blowingly awesome and then when I watched it I was like, meh.
That Asgardian citadel was rather awesome though.

Haha , the mould lines of power will soon be gone although if I was to create rules they would -1 on all stat lines for them !

I was horrified when I saw them that large on screen.

The shoulder pads are from Anvil Industry , they are the larger ones meant for terminators. I also have the smaller one's, just had a look through your Spartans man & they'd work well. (nice work btw)

Uploaded this so you can compare both.

Thats from a few weeks back before I'd decided to theme the army / create the ice bases I was going leaning towards cog bases but I'll be saving those for some Iron warriors I think!

They fit straight onto normal marine arms with little cleaning needed, the terminator ones do need alot of cleaning up but still a snug fit, I noticed you've used som Scibor parts don't know if you have used the shoulder pads but the Anvil ones are alot easier to work with from what I've experienced.

I like them but I think when I get the time I'll be making something a little more detailed for the army.

I can see why people may not like thor but it really was the citadel that made it for me. The movie needed more Asgard .

I like the concept! I enjoyed the movie Thor for what it was and not what it should have been (in my mind).

Have you thought of Horned heads? Similar to the Chaos Marauders, those are nice Viking/Norse style helmed heads.

i like the concept, and i think you should definetly try incorporating space wolf heads into it, or some fantasy chaos heads in there. it would really fit in with the scheme (in my opinion).

^^ Yeah Scibor Shoulder pads need a lot of trimming. But I have found all their other stuff works great on Space Marines! and I hate it when I take a pic of a mini and it has GIANT mould lines that I never noticed before, even while I was painting the mini.

Flying Poo I'm glad I've spotted these pre painting them, I might start double checking things using a digital camera before undercoating more often.

Hmelrose thats how I looked at the movie too, for what it was.
I like the idea of using Viking / Norse styled helmed heads infact I've actually got a whole bunch of concept sketches(will scan & upload) I did for some I was going to model. I'm a little torn in two though as I love the "crusader" ( may be wrong on that name ) style of helm I've collected alot of them over time & have been saving them for a project like this most things in the army if I can help it will have them. I think it looks ok and although not particularly Nordic It fits with the clean smooth plate armor worn by the Asgardians.

I've done a couple of helms using the chaos knight ones trimmed down but I don't have any pictures I can upload on this hard drive I'll dig one out when I get chance. This just backs up the fact I start way to many things and never finish them

Menziez
I've got some fantasy Chaos bits I'll be using a little further down the line I did this a while ago again just as a test out of curiosity, your right it does really fit the scheme! Plus I'll be doing a space wolf list too when I'm done with this 750 point one.

That (knight?) is looking sweet!
If you need any more of those horses I have three or four spare. Perhaps we can set up a mutually beneficial bits trade?

Sounds good Flying Pooo, I have ALOT of bits as mentioned my main interest is kit bashing / building. Take a pop at something I may have it spare lol. I have another 4 horses sat in the box still but something I really want to do is the entire unit haha although I'm about to post another off topic picture I swear to the gods I'll stick to the 750 point list & get it finished.

Anyway I wanted to know your thought's on these bases , found this image on the hard drive while looking for a different head example for Hmelrose

I went with Ice bases because of the theme but originally I had started to base what I thought was going to be the army on these

Try not to focus on the silly number of dreads haha, before I was set on the Sons of Asgard I wanted to do some sort of "golden army" (Hellboy) style but could not really think of a way to tie it all together aprt from with dreads. After some further thinking I'm going to do a Iron warrior or mechanicus link to the Sons of Asgard.

If I do I'll end up casting them for the next project I think but wanted peoples thoughts first

First: I love that SM on the Horse! Will it count as Cavalry similar to SW Fenrisian Cavalry or will you count it as a bike squad? I'm so dang tempted to build some of those models now!

Secondly: ! Helms whether crusader style or Viking/Norse style should still fit the Asgard theme. If you've read the old Thor comics or seen depictions in them of Asgard and the Warriors of Asgard (not just the Gods ) but the warriors of Valhalla and other troops, there is a smattering of different styled helms and crusaders tend to fall into that.

The armor bitz you've added look great! I can't wait to see them painted.

Cogs put me in mind of Steampunk and Warmachine. I like your bases, but for the theme you're going with I don't think they'd fit. my two cents

It will be count as a biker , I have something bigger & better for my count as TWC & Wolf Lord. Again they are using the older bases & need rebasing.

Would have been perfect for the Golden Army theme then I'll bring it together some how I really want to use them haha.

At the time I made these I had not decided on the Jotunheim Ice bases - Really not looking forward to re-basing the Wolf Lord as he is pinned & glued every where into that base

Those mechanical Dread/Rhino/Armored puppies are frickin sweet!

How did you make them??!

The 5 stand alone ones at the bottom of the image are just normal bloodcrushers nothing custom apart from the bases.

The top one though is a couple of kits: IG sentinel , Bloodcrushers, Dread and for the rest I'll have to take a look when I'm home later as I can't remember but I'm pretty sure you could make one using those 3 kits. It's an expensive model to make but I had the bits for most of it & only had to buy a single sentinel to get the rear legs.

When I get the chance I'll post a tutorial on making one if you'd like & I'll build another to try to avoid re basing mine It was really fun to build and did not take too long as I was so used to re posing dreads & dread parts.

Well this can become interesting..

One thing though, 'Yodenheim'.. rethink that, seriously. Because the closest thing you'll come there in meaning would be 'Home of the Jews'. And now that's a bit silly.

Concider just sticking with the original 'Jotunheim' (ie: Home of the Giants) wich is probably (i guess here) closer to what you really intended.

I have a little hobby-thread going in the P&M section. Some say it's the best blog on Dakka, some don't agree, most belive it would be better if I finished at least one project some time this century and not just kept starting new ones.
Check it out, you just might like it.

Rampage - thank you hopefully the paint will be on the same level guess I'll find out soon enough.

STC_LogisEngine - THANK YOU! haha - updated and thanks to your early correction I don't have to edit any more than 3 images & 2 posts very helpful , I actually wondered why I could not find that much spelling it the way I was & Google did not auto correct for some reason , of all words I could fail on ha ha.

Anyway guys thank you for all your input so far I hope over the next week or so I'll have lots of nice updates for you some test painted models / ice bases.

Still picking out a colour scheme ideas welcome!

Along with any nice references for painting what I can only think to describe as "darker space wolves" I'll try to dig up an example.

Not quite what I mean , what I have in mind is some where between Pre Heresy Luna Wolves & Space Wolves? I give up I hope some one has an idea of what I mean ?

He's anticipating the "size creep" GW has been known for over the last few years and is going to run them as Terminators in 6th Ed.
