I finished my Movie Marines project recently with the last two entries.

First off, I needed a rhino to finish off the lot of them. I converted this rhino quite some time ago, but I always had a sort of block when it came to painting it up. Eventually, I realized that it was the static boxiness of the rhino mini- no matter how much you convert and add, it is tough to make it dynamic.

In order to remedy this, I decided to add a base. This mini is mounted on an old CD-ROM that we never care to see again.

Second, I threw together the sergeant mini- in part because I've done lots of this kind of freehand on projects for commissions, but I haven't done it for myself very much. The lion banner was in part because I felt it would go well as a sort of personal heraldry icon on him.

I put the Rhino up on Cmon for anyone who cares to vote.

That is just awesome. I have no technical critisizms. I do think the bases would really benefit from just a little bit of greenery (like foam foliage, sticks, etc) which would provide some nice contrast and compliment your super realistic painting style. But overall, just fantastic.

Ok I can't stand ultramarines. Aboslutley can't stand 'em, never could. But even with that as a prejudice these both look amazing. I love the lion head coming through the omega.

The shading, weathering all of it looks really nice.

Crazy weathering, damage and detail.
Great stuff.

If I had to be so petty I feel shame, Id say the marines helmet is very white, dosent look battle damaged at all or like hes been in action.

GW did an article in White Dwarf years back, with rules for playing Space Marines as they are described in the background setting, rather than as they need to be for the game to be balanced. It was a fun format thing, rather than a serious effort.

This is awesome, though I do have a couple of questions...

With the base for the rhino (the cd), what did you do with the under side? Is it painted/undercoated as well?

Also, is it game legal? I am starting up a new mech army, and I want to base my chimera's. Can I go to a tourney and be able to use them on the base?

-The underside of the CD is not painted. In fact, the CD is upside down so that when you turn the mini upside down, you can see that I used an old King's Quest 5 CD-Rom. I'm rather happy about that, honestly.

- As far as the game rules go, you are allowed to mount something on a base so long as it is at least as large as the base it came with. Many people have taken this to mean that you can give bases to minis that didn't come with them (such as Space Marine Attack Bikes). I think that this will apply to larger minis as well, and it only serves to make gameplay easier in the end.

Yep. In White Dwarf #300 there was a list in which a 10 man tactical squad with a rhino made a 1500 point force. And they may have been a somewhat overpowered 1500 point force.

Don't know how much it improves gameplay, but man does it work, aesthetically. Immediately, the weathering of the vehicle itself seems more plausible and the "metuhl bawks" feels like a rugged, moving vehicle. My one complaint is that the rough terrain beneath highlights just how long and flat the bottom tread piece is. Feels like the lack of such a relatively simple "chop, pivot, glue" job was pure oversight, considering the extremely high caliber of the rest of the work.

Not quite. It is a black undercoat, then Ultramarine blue shaded with P3 exile blue and highlighted with P3 Menoth White base (a nice bone color).

Your models do look amazing.

As for using CDs for basing, this has been done for years for both models and terrain. A number of companies sell actual bases that size as well. Privateer Press ( for example) sells cd sized bases with the same lip as the base on the infantry model above in that size through their on-line store, as do a few others...
