Subject: Starting a second army... DE or Necrons?
|
 |
Imperial Recruit in Training

Hi,
I've been playing W40K for 6 months now and I'm really up for a second army to alternate my games and painting.
So far, I'm an Imperial Guard player and I'm looking for a totally different gameplay/look!!!
The two armies that took my interest are Necron and Dark Eldar... both got new models recently, looks great, and are quite different from IG gameplay-wise.
To be honest if I was playing 3 armies those 3 would be awesome.
So which one to take now? Care to help me choose? Need your help!!!!
What would be the best choice for you and why?
Feel free to propose me another army and explain why!
Thx for your time!

Crons are more different from IG I think. Plenty of short ranged weapons, and really, really, tough.
But not to the point where they could tank everything like Marines.

For me it is usually a painting/modelling question, e.g. what is going to be different and interesting to paint, especially compared to what I have.
From that standpoint I agree with Cthululs Spy, the Crons are going to be the bigger change from guard. OSL, metallics, ceramics or stone, the 'crons allow for some really different and fun paint schemes.
For me it would just come donw to which army I wanted to paint more as that is usually the biggest obstacle to having a completed force.

Daemons!
Why? Lots more flesh and Jack of all trades units make it different from IG, plus lots of different surfaces and colours.

No offense, but I believe he asked for a choice between Necrons and Dark Eldar
Anyway, I'd say collect Necrons first because IG are a more horded army, like Dark Eldar. Plus you can pull off some amazingly striking colour schemes with Necrons. I collect both

Dark Eldar are very mobile and hard-hitting but they have no armor. Necrons are now a little more mobile but generally not as fast. Personally, (while I don't collect either one at the moment) I would start Dark Eldar for the challenge and the learning curve.

Ya, the way i see it is hard to decide:
Dark Eldar: Fast, Mobile, Melee-powerhouse, Weak vehicule, Squishy army
Necron: Slow, Short-range shooty, Resistant, Strong vehicule, Elite army
Both are really different from guard who are maxing Firepower, Medium speed, Squishy army, Strong vehicule
I often think I should have go Necron and Dark Eldar for total divergence... screw guard lol :(

They're both good armies, so competitiveness isn't really a problem in deciding.
Which models do you like the best? That'll be what swings it I think

What do's the rest of the group play? I'd always consider which is least common locally when making my choice.

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. I would recommend going with DE, since crons is effectively a shooting army.
I as you this: Do you want 2 shooting armies?
That said, nercons can do melee, but overall DE do it better. Of course DE can be a shooting army as well. CURSES!
Would you rather hit first, and hit hard, or move slow but tend to stand back up?
Do you want vehicles or would you avoid them?
Either army is a tough choice, but at the end of the day it comes down to what you personally want.
I would do this: Find the reasons why you like crons and DE, then look at the rest of the 40k armies. If another one interests you, for the same reasons as crons and/or DE then spend some time reading up on them. After all, your going to be dropping a lot of cash on this, so do your homework!

Flip or Coin?
Or go Crons. They will be better than Guard, and more fun tom paint, rather than the wrigglyness of uniforms and rivets of tanks, they are nothing buyt smoothe panels. ! know a guy who did 3K of Croins using just a sponge and it looked pretty good. I would recommend the brush though. It wasn't THAT good.

Good point, I s'pose almost every army I've seen involves flying them around in vehicles. Not how I'd like to see DE played though, but I guess it's the only way - I'd prefer piles of troops which I first thought you'd get with DE
And sorry, didn't read that last bit

Oooh... How dare you! Well, I'll have you know the fluff describes hordes of Dark Eldar jumping down from ships to slaughter whole populaces on foot.
At least that's what I think I remember from reading it.
EDIT: Seems like we're creating a horde of our own, from Orks

I think DE are more opposite the IG playing style, though they are still lower stat forces. The DE rely on speed and bringing the fight to the opponent which is opposite the IG stand back and shoot the heck out of everything method. More assault, but the Power from Pain rule means that when your units are successful on the table they get harder to take out as well.
I am in the middle of building a DE army myself. Was figuring that I would also want to redo a Necron army when the book came out, but I am just finding the DE book and units much more interesting than the new Cron stuff. It is nice to see the crons with a lot of options now, though.
Of course YMMV...if you want the real opposite of the IG, though, you need to play marines or chaos marines. Tough armor, good stats and difficult to kill compared to IG.
