Whether it be because of background, looks, personalities. Can include before or after heresy, doesn't matter!

Just tell me who and why

IMO it's a tie between sanguinius and pre heresy Fulgrim. They're both epic in every way!

The Night Lord books by ADB have some nice bits about Kurze in them.

There is so much wrong with that post.

Magnus was driven to Chaos by Russ. He didn't want to turn, he was forced to, to protect his Legion.

Except that that should be five. Sanguinius and Manus were slightly dead at this point. And the Lion was sleeping in the Rock.

Also, Sanguinius earned the title every bit as much, if not more than, Gulliman did. He knew he was going to die facing a Chaosed up Horus, but he went willingly, knowing his sacrifice would ultimately lead to the Emperor's victory. I think he lived up to the title Primarch pretty well.

True! I posted that because I'm sick of all the flak I get for saying that, almost always from people who don't know or understand the whole deal. I'm fed up being told "Lorgar was the weakest primarch". Maybe in a straight up fight, but he was strong in other ways.

Yes, he had the remarkable foresight to have a relatively unmangled legion at his command with which to threaten to destroy any of his brothers who thought the codex or the reorganization of the Imperium were bad ideas. I mean look at that slacker Manus, he didn't do a bloody thing after Isstvan.

Not to mention that his reforms and forward thinking led to an Empire of Man that manages to incorporate the worst elements mankind's history into a single entity.

He is BATMAN of the Primarchs.

Along with him I really like Corax, Sanguinius, Horus pre–fall and Lorgar — the way he started off weak and turned totally kickarse later.

...and the stagnation has so much to do with the Lords of Terra and not Guilliman, who was still on the leading from the front till the end.

Thousand Sons Battleship wandering the galaxy...

Magnus and Sanguinius. The Crimson King was supposed to lead the exploration and conquest of the Webway and was probably meant to stand beside the Emperor when the time came to accelerate and smooth Mankind's evolution into the new psychic masters of the galaxy. The Angel was the heir to the Imperium of Man; all the Primarchs looked up to him (even the traitors before they became traitors). It's pretty much implied that had he not insisted on accompanying the Emperor into the Vengeful Spirit, he would have been named successor. All the surviving loyalists would have accepted him, unlike Guilliman, who while having my respect, had his authority questioned by the other loyal Primarchs.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'
