Having worked w/ horses for almost 20 years, GW doesn't do a very good job of doing justice to horses. For example, a black horse on it's mane, tail & feathers on its hocks (basically anywhere the hair is longer & stringier) is going to sunburn easily & get an almost reddish tinge. Also, the buckskin they're showing in the horses of rohan article is just... a sickly color. To paint horses well the first thing to keep in mind is that they are not actually a solid, smooth surface as the model is, but rather millions of small hairs, most barely 1/4" long & as such, I find that you have to think about your lighting alot more because different angles will produce different sheens on the animal. Pay close attention to their flanks (the area just behind the saddle on the models) as this hair has a different grain & wave to it that can almost look like a different color. It forms a slight swirl pattern upward over the rump on lighter horses it's noticably darker often. As for the mane, it's usually darkest at the base, same w/ the tail so feather/drybrush away from the folicles. For painting facial markings such as stars (the big spot on the forehead) use a black primer & then swirl it outward from a central point to provide the proper look.
