Hey guys, I'm currently building a small space wolves army (between 500 and 750 pts) and debating on whether or not to purchase rhinos to use as troop transports or forgo the mechs and just bulk up on extra bodies. Is mobility really important in such small points games?

The mobility and durability that Rhinos give you is almost always worth it. Lower point levels are by their definition going to be light on fire support units as most of your points go into the compulsory 2 Troops + 1 HQ. This means your vehicles will have longer lifespans which is always nice. Mobility might be slightly less important (if you are on a 4 x 4, otherwise its more important) but the durability you get from being immune to small arms is still incredibly powerful. As you are presumably building up to higher point levels getting some vehicles is probably a wise move anyway, since its very rare for tournament level armies to have absolutely no vehicles.

Yeah, since I'm eventually going to be playing into the higher points levels, I might as well get just get started on investing on some transports.

I would say that mobility gives you a huge advantage, especially in objective games. Remember, ALWAYS buy the Razorback kit. 2 bucks for the option to take a rhino or razorback is pretty good

Meh. If you want to, you can certainly take them, but you really don't have to.

I mean, at this points level, the only anti-tank your opponents are likely to bring are the things that are going to be good against rhinos, so you're not really adding that much speed or survivability.

Rhinos may be cheap, but 70+ points in a 500 point list kind of cuts, especially in a marine army, which already struggles at this points level, much less the relative dead weight of something that's not adding killing power.

I'd say go for it at 750 point games but at 500 point you won't be able to get them in. MAybe but at a cost of special weapons and stuff.

I agree. 70 pts for two rhinos vs 80 pts for two TL HB razorbacks. Make one of your GH packs into two 5 man packs. For ten more points you have an extra scoring unit, two of which are in transports armed with something at least a little killy. Invest more points for TL assault cannons.

Like Ailaros said, most of the AT in a low point game is going to be design for rhino's/dreads

Either focus on shooting instead of melee at low points or if melee is your armies thing, use jump packs or very few vehicles. You will be surprised how many people bring melta guns even at 500 points.

It ultimately depends on the force really...
I mean in 500-750pt games as Dark Eldar I'd be taking 3 ravagers or 3 Talos ( 300-350pts which leaves 150-400pts to fill with troops and HQ ), probably with a Haemonculi and wracks or warriors, possibly in transports themselves.

That's either 9 lances on fast skimmers or 3 monstrous creatures with nasty wargear, backed by several splinter cannons and other poison nasties. At 750pts I'll likely have 6 vehicles.

I'm not sure exactly what I'd do with space wolves... probably try to fit in 2-3 squads of long fangs or multiple tanks... That said if I had the money I could probably manage 4-6 Land Speeders. - But I'd always be bearing in mind what I might have to go against

Agreed. 400 pts on troops, 100 for a captain and 250 for a LR. can't go wring.

Isn't there some rule that prevents you from bringing AV 14 to most 500-750pt games, mainly to prevent IG from bringing two leman Russes and stomping everything? I swear, I keep seeing people mention it somewhere on here.

Plus, doesnt that seem a little risky putting all your eggs in one basket? I mean, my 750 IG foot list has 4 melta, several melta bombs, 4 plasma, a RL, and Marbo with demo charges, not to mention Straken with his powerfist thing that does 1d6 extra armor penetration. I could easily take another 8 meltas or so if I had enough guys modeled with them, and I'm just a noobie learning how to build my army. Imagine a seasoned IG player with Chimeras or (even worse) Vendetta's to get him in close quickly. If they take out the Land Raider, you would be completely screwed as you'd have no transport and 1/3 of your army is essentially gone. Of course, i dont play SM, so maybe I'm just babbling here, but wouldnt it be smarter to take a couple lighter vehicles in its place so you make the enemy have to split his fire? Yeah, they'll die quicker, but they cant possibly die faster than having the entire enemy team focusing fire on a single Land Raider right?
