Hey
So I've been tempted in to starting a fantasy force, had an intro game today and had loads of fun (I played as Skaven). I'm looking at each of the forces out there and seeing the benefits of each, but the annoying thing is that none of them seem to tick more boxes than the others so I'm having a hard time of picking which force to go with. A month ago it was Ogres, then Empire, then Tomb Kings, then VC and now Skaven
So I wanted to put it out to the Dakka community to discuss the pros and cons of each race.
I really like the idea of strong, magic focussed force. I saw the latest Harry Potter film and that part where they bring the statues to life which jump down and start 7 bells of hell out of everyone was really cool. I'm 50 / 50 on taking a horde army; I'm not much at painting and, well, cash ain't exactly flowing freely, but then that's exactly the kind of army I'd need to strike with the animating statues thing. Add to that that I prefer cannons over monstrous creatures and I don't seem to have a clear indicator as to which I should go for. Oh, and modelling is a damn big thing for me.
The only thing I know I don't want, is Lizardmen. Damned frogs.
So thanks to anyone that can spare a minute and an opinion!

Magic focused, eh? It's a shame that you don't like Lizardmen then, heh. High Elves are pretty cool when it comes to magic (i'm looking at you, Teclis). Orcs and Goblins have some pretty fun magic as well (and a little bit random) but I suppose you want to have more "serious" magic. Warriors of Chaos got some cool magic as well, especially Tzeentch mages.
So... I suggest you to go for either Warriors of Chaos or High Elves.
However, VC use a lot of magic as well and a new armybook is coming soon... Soo yeah, you could always wait for the new release.

If you want to go for statues in a very literal sense, you should look at the Tomb Kings. They boast units that are basically just that; statues of their gods brought to life by the souls of departed heroes, and they are beastly in combat to boot (at least the Necrosphinx is). Here are some images of the constructs of the Tomb Kings:
In addition, Tomb Kings are pretty solid in terms of magic, though for the most part their magic is supportive in nature, making their units better rather than exploding enemy units.

Vampire Counts are an extremely magic focused army, their general must be a wizard and the typical Vampire Counts force will field 3-4 wizards.
There's a number of things you can do with it as well. The Lore of the Vampires lends itself to raising your army back when it dies, but you can also take other lores for more destructive casting.
Vampire Counts are also about outrageously strong characters and very weak core troops offsetting eachother.
As for who they are, check this out
Unnatural storm clouds gather overhead, blotting out the pale sun and casting a foreboding shadow across the battlefield. From the twilight the chittering of bats and the bestial howls of wolves fill the air. A chill descends over the land, striking dread into the hearts of mortals that dare stand against this nightmarish host.
Packs of Crypt Ghouls bound forwards, devolved cannibals baying like hounds, eager to feast on the flesh of the living. Shambling hordes of Zombies shuffle forward with lurching steps, wisps of green witchfire playing about their limbs and dragging them forward like demented puppets. Their tattered flesh is blotched and rotted, revealing bloodless veins and unbeating hearts, their lifeless eyes staring mindlessly ahead. Some are little more than skeletons while others bear a terrifying resemblance to the recently deceased.
Behind the Zombies rank upon rank of Skeletal Soldiers march resolutely forward, clutching the bronze swords and shields of old, glowing balefires burning within their empty eye sockets. All that they remember of their past lives is faint echoes of battles fought in ages past. All that they feel is the compulsion to fight and obey their masters as they did so many years ago. Mortals who dare stand against the undead horde are confronted with a ghastly apparition, for what soldier could remain unafraid with the vision of his own death lurching towards him?
Called forth from their rest by the magic of the dead, unquiet spirits roam the twilight fog. Their groaning cries pierce the soul and their chilling touch steals the life energy of the living, as if their fingers were daggers made of ice. Writhing with a pulsing nimbus of black energy, Wraiths and Banshees flow amidst the Undead throng, seeking the warmth of mortals. Mortal weapons merely pass through these supernatural horrors and their presence drives the living insane with dread.
Clad in the ancient armour of distant centuries Wights, Grave Guard and Black Knights plucked from their barrow graves march implacably forward, step after step, in a silent mockery of the Knightly Orders of Men. Their weapons are corroded with time and dusty with the years, held together by an evil magic that suffuses their being with an eerie green glow. The mere touch of their blades is enough to snuff out the life of a living man and they are sustained by a seething malevolence powerful enough to ignore blows that would mortally wound a living creature.
Behind these creatures the witchfires of the army highlight the haggard-faced Necromancers cloaked in the skins of men. With their magical urgings bone knits and flesh fuses as the fallen of the shambling Horde stumble back to their feet to resume the advance with lipless moans. The stench of death hangs over the army like a pall.
At the centre of this hideous parody of a Mortal army stands the most powerful and dangerous abomination: the Vampire Lord. It is this nightmare creature whose will has summoned the dead from their graves and it is its will that has bound the army together. Vampires are unbelievably ancient beings. Created 5,000 years before present day by Nagash they embody Necromancy: The magic of the past, of withered flesh and faded times. With unnatural strength, speed and toughness sucked from the souls of their prey the Vampire is a lethal Warrior-Sorceror that strikes a gripping fear into any who confronts it. Seeking dominion over all living things, a Vampire Lord raises its army from ancient battlefields and dusty tombs to overthrow the rule of mortals and reign over the survivors as an undying, merciless Emperor.
Few face the Vampire Counts and survive. The few who do are forever haunted by the memory.

Change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither God nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.
No game of chess can be won without pawns, and this may prove to be a very long game.

I would suggest Empire. It has access to a lot of magic, some aniti-magic, as well as great shooting and a decent variety of troops and builds.

Tomb Kings seems right up your alley with animated statues and magic focus. You could model up your skeletons as animated statues and paint them as such pretty easily too. Not sure if TK have any war machines as such though. But you gotta admit the big constructs are sweet.

Tomb kings have some niiiiiiice models, though Im not sure there the easiest / best army to roll right now considering the new 8th edition rules have kind of hurt them but ofc if you like how they look and feel you should prioritize by that
Skaven are pocket intense, I say this because you get 20 troops ina box set and you should aim to have at least 1 troop per 10pts giving 2000pts an average infantry count of 200 at least. That said I find them extremely fun both fluff wise and to play with.
VC, new vc I can't say much about these as I dont have the new book.
Ogres are probably the easiest army to pickup and use in your list simply due to having few, obscenely powerful models that do include every element of the game and you can easily exceed 2000pts with more then 20 models alone.
Can't say too much for empire either, apparently overpriced until there new book arrives? Jack of all trades army 'to me' given they can pretty much focus on any element of the game you desire and come out doing well.

First things first, thanks for all the info here! I've been drawn back to the ogres again, though I think its mostly influenced by the cost, secondarily by the larger models being (in my mind at least) easier to paint.
They don't fit my big magic vision though, so I reckon I'd probably draft in some VC or TK sorcerous pacts for magic users, and then add some special units from other armies intended to put across the statues brought to life vibe. So yeah. a core ogre army with added mages from other races, bringing to life statues of *insert race that I feel like doing at the time here*
Give it a week and I'll have swung round to Orcs instead

Magic focused races are:
Dark Elves - no cannons
High Elves (due to Teclis character) - no cannons
Warriors of Chaos (Tzeench) - daemon cannons
Lizardmen (Slaan) - no cannons
Skaven - warp cannons
I implore you to make your decision carefully, and find the army that attractive to you without rules and numbers. Make this decision yourself. Starting a FB army is a big commitment and taking on some race that will make you yawn in a month is not something you want.

Had a browse through the WoC book today and like what I see, especially all the customisation options, I could really get in to that!
I can see myself hop scotching a little as I don't think one race really ticks all the boxes I'm looking for, but I definitely think I'll start out with WoC and maybe a sorcerous pact with some vampire lords
