Having a look at the Necron codex I discovered that you can spend up to and over 1500pts on one HQ choice, by selecting:

Nemesor Zahndrekh
Varguard Obyron (taken free with Zahndrekh, alternatively replace both of these with a maxed out Overlord)
Royal court including 5 maxed out Lords and 5 Crypteks of each type, maxed out.

That equates to 1520pts... I just wanted to share my thoughts, as I think that's both amazing and ridiculous, and wondered what other people thought?

EDIT: I know no one would ever do this

Well, that's what. . . 27 models? There's four types of Cryptek, right?

There are Space Wolf and Grey Knight armies that have fewer models than that. Doesn't seem that ridiculous to me, in the age of Deathstarhammer 40k.

27 Models for 1,500 points isn't that crazy. GK can do it too.

meh... blood angels can spend 2850 points on a single troops choice of 30 models.

Most codex have insane super-units you can build, but never would.

Nope. 12 models, and there are five types of Cryptek . You can have a max of 5 Crypteks and 5 Lords in one Court, plus the two independent Characters (Zahndrekh and Obyron). I think what BeRzErKeR meant is that you have one of each type of Cryptek so you can have all the unique wargear options. Of course, that's a pretty squishy 1500 - 5 of your models have no invulnerable save (Obyron, 4 of the Crypteks). Five of your models have only a 4+ armor save (the Crypteks). There's also a lot of points going into redundant/useless wargear - a much more efficient Necron Deathstar features five Lords, one with an Orb, five MSS/Scythe/Weave/Shifters. As far as Crypteks, I think that for a Deathstar unit you'd want at least one Storm for the anti-assault, one Transmog for the Crucible, a Destruction for the Gaze/Pulse, then your choice for the other two. A Deathstar consisting of only Obyron and five Lords costs about 790 points - much more reasonable.

You can make a list that costs as much as most tournament lists using solely farsight and his bodyguard.

it's not totally surprising, If I dug out my old 3.5 chaos book I'd be able to squeeze a lot more out of a single Hq choice.

I have a 1200 point deathstar in my BT army that I actually use.

It's 10 models, and can get more points easily.

Admittedly it takes up four force-organization slots.

Only twelve? Niiiiice.

Still, I can spend 1100 points on 10 Nobz if I really want to; and assuming I have the points available, I can take five units of them. Most armies have the capability to build a ludicrously expensive unit like this.

If we're talking about the number of points you can fit into one FOC slot, IG can fit almost 2800pts in a single troops slot if you really wanna pack all of it in there. It ends up being like 20 Kill Points worth of stuff, but you can take all of it and not have satisfied the basic requirements for a regular game of 40k.

The Blood Angels can fit 2846 in a single troops slot, and that is only 2 KP's

Not In a Single Troops Slot they can't.

True then I would have to give it to blood angels with a fully equiped death company.

They edge it out over the guard by about 50pts.

However, this can only be done once per army. The Guard can do it six times!

Not true. If you include Asteroth, he removes the 0-1 limit, and you can do it 6 times (Minus 150 points because you can only have one Lemartes)

1399 is the max size for a farsight bomb (as long as you avoid FW drones, otherwise you could have heavy gun drones and it would get RIDICULOUS)

Not only is is crazy, it's great fun. I had a battle of two 1200ish (legalish) point armies: 1205pt Grey Knights super unit v 1215pt new Necron super unit.

At one point, thanks to his Mindshackle Scarabs and my Empyrean Brain Mines and Psychotrope Grenades, fully half his unit was assaulting the other half of his unit with two unable to fight at all, with my two HQ units (Lord Draigo and a librarian) and four Paladins were under his control and assaulting my unit with all their weapons.

So... I roll for my hits from my remaining models and then yours randomly attack the entire unit but... you get to use my guys against me, but we have to assign hits... wait... erm...

After five minutes of trying to work out how the hell we'd work this one out, we gave up and went for a coffee. Excelsior!
