Subject: How can I beat Necrons with my Orks. Any ideas???
|

Help! I have played my friend who plays necrons just before the Necron release with orks and have won all the times. Now he has got 10 lychguard, imoteckh the stormlord, trazyn the infinite, 5 deathmarks, some more destroyers and an annhialation barge. This adds to 1 monolith, 36 warriors, a heavy destroyer and two normal destroyers, a necron lord with res orb and warsycthe, a few flayed ones, 7 scarab bases and a c'tan shard (nightbringer). How can I beat him with the firepower he has?
We usually play around 1500 points. In my ork army I have for the hq's Ghazkgull thraka, a weirdboy, a warboss with pk, a big mek with SAG, and a big mek with KFF. For the elites I have a squad of 7 nobs, 2 with pk 3 with BC and 2 normal ones, a squad of kommandoes (4 and one nob with PK). For troops I have 2 squads of 20 boys and 1 trukk. For fast attack I have 3 deffkopta's, and 14 stormboyz and Zagstrukk. For Heavy support I have 1 battlewagon(4bs and 1 zzap gun), 1 deff dread with 4 cc arms, 3 killa kans (2 with rokkits and 1 with a grotzooka), and a kannon. Any ideas/tips on what I should use and how to have a chance???

As a rather new Ork player myself, my best recommendation is to do what I did: search through most anything Jidmah has written about Orks already. There is one other Ork player that I feel greatly understands The Krumpins, but I am at a loss to recall his name right now.
I'd say go Green Tide all over those Necrons, but that's just me. I like the Orks as a stabby horde, even if it's not the best tailored list for Necrons. Lots of Shoota Boyz, KFF Big Meks, maybe your Killa Kanz in there too for some assistance and then Lootas for some long-distance punch.

My test games against necrons with the footslogging green tide tend to go in favour of the necrons. Seriously, a lot of those necron tricks are way underpriced, like the res orb, which makes necrons more durable in close combat. I had more success when mounting things into battlewagons. For necron vehicles, the only reasonable option is to hit them with the usual power klaws but even that works only when you can catch them. Wraiths and scarabs have proven to fare poorly against boyz with PK nobs.
I find that long range ork shooting can have some benefits against necrons, particularly the boomgun.

Most of your available units to not blend nicely together. Not sure this is about necrons really.
Single trukk, single battlewagons, 3 kans or 40 orks footslogging doesn't make a good list.
Start with 4 battlewagons with deathrollers, add maybe koptas then fill out the points you'll have a good list.
Start with tons of trukks and rocket buggies, then add some fast cool stuff. Actually this is probably hardest way to go.
Start with 90 foot slogging boyz, probably add some big guns or lootas.
Start with 9 kanz with rockets, 2 large mobs of boyz.
Easiest method though is just to go shooty. Take loads of lootas and big guns.

If you are set with what you have and can't get more to optimize, it's going to be very difficult. You could certainly stand to gain from some lootas.
BUT
At 1500 Points, using what you have I would go:
HQ:
Big Mek w/ KFF - 85
Warboss w/ Pk, Attack Squig, Cybork - 110
Troops:
19x Shoota Boyz, 2x Big Shoota, 1x Nob w/ Pk, BP - 164
20x Shoota Boyz, 2x Big Shoota, 1x Nob w/ Pk, BP - 170
4x Nobs Squad w/1x Painboy (should be a fairly easy conversion on one normal nob), 4x Cybork, 1x PK , 1x BC, 1xNormal - 160
Elites:
Fast Attack:
1x Deffkopta w/ TL Rokkits and Buzzsaw - 70
1x Deffkopta w/ TL Rokkits and Buzzsaw - 70
14x Stormboyz w/Zagtruk - 253
Heavy Support:
Battlewagon w/ RPJ, Armour Plates, reinforced ram (Carries the 19 boyz and the KFF) - 110
Dedicated transport:
Trukk (For the Nobs and Warboss) w/ RPJ, Grot Riggers, Armour Plates. Reinforced Ram - 60
Comes out to about 1272 points - you can choose to throw whatever else in there you like but you don't have much that is going to work with what is already listed. As it stands you have already got 20 boyz being left alone on foot as well as a giant bullet magnet in the Trukk.
Going to be a tough one.....you should try focusing on fleshing out some units, whether it be Kans, Wagons, Trukks, whatever........just get MOAR!!

Agree with "moar"
If your opponent is investing that much into his HQ slot, and on inefficient models like Lychguard, you can beat him with volume, volume and assault.

Thanks for the praise, but there are many other great ork players on these forums, like KingCracker, Redbeard or Dashofpepper(though he is no longer playing orks).
HQ:
Big Mek w/KFF - 85
Warboss w/Pk, Attack Squig, Cybork - 110
Troops:
19x Shoota Boyz, 2x Big Shoota, 1x Nob w/Pk, BP - 164

4x Nobs Squad w/1x Painboy (should be a fairly easy conversion on one normal nob), 4x Cybork, 1x PK , 1x BC, 1xNormal - 160
Every nob squad should have 2 PKs, no matter the size. That's why you are taking nobz in the first place. You should also field 5 minimum, four are swamped to easily and more vulnerable to 25% tests. Besides that BP and Waagh! Banner are pretty much mandatory.
Elites:
Fast Attack:
1x Deffkopta w/TL Rokkits and Buzzsaw - 70
1x Deffkopta w/TL Rokkits and Buzzsaw - 70
14x Stormboyz w/Zagtruk - 253
As all necron vehicles are AV11 or even AV13 in the rear, the buzz saw loses a lot of it's power against necrons. I wouldn't invest 140 in it.
Heavy Support:
Battlewagon w/RPJ, Armour Plates, reinforced ram (Carries the 19 boyz and the KFF) - 110
Dedicated transport:
Trukk (For the Nobs and Warboss) w/RPJ, Grot Riggers, Armour Plates. Reinforced Ram - 60
You make one of the biggest mistakes here, mixing fast units with slow units. Either mount all boyz and nobz in vehicles, or none. In addition, the battlewagon should have a weapon. You are paing 10 points to not get stopped by "stunned", why not pay 5 points to not get stopped by "weapon destroyed"? A deff rolla is pretty much mandatory, too.
The trukk, on the other hand, should get neither grot rigger, nor armour plates. There simply isn't a point in spending 15 points to keep a 35 point model moving, which is much more likely to get get destroyed than being unable to move and alive. If you need a trukk fixed, have your bigmek do it.
So my advice would be - play smaller games. You aren't equipped yet to field 1500 points, 1000 would be a much better place for you to be at. Use your boyz and nobz on foot, have the stormboyz deep strike in a safe location (no suiciding into the enemy lines), and use your kanz and that deff dread as support for your boyz. When you buy more models, decide whether you want to be moving on foot or mount everyone in vehicles. If you are staying on the ground, get more kanz and boyz, later maybe a second deff dread. If you want to mount them get a second battlewagon first and add more battlewagons or trukks later. Just make sure your entire army moves at the same speed.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

King Cracker! Yes, that's the guy I couldn't remember. I have read and liked a bit of his stuff too. I did not mean to imply that there weren't other good Ork players out there, but if the OP is really new, I feel that your posts are very clearly laid out with good, simple logic. Reading that helped me get started so I thought it would help him to get started too.

I was only giving advice based on what he has as well as the point level he wants to play at. I missed that he had 2 PK Nobz available, otherwise I would have added it - I agree on the Waaagh! Banner and BP, but again, he didn't have it available. He also didn't have enough vehicles to mount all of his troops. He didn't have a deff rolla for the BW either....
The suggestion for riggers and armor on the Trukk was because he may as well do everything he can to keep the 1 Trukk he has moving.
But I agree, smaller point games are going to be better with that he has.

Buidling a Waagh! banner is really easy. Best ask any fantasy players at your store if they've got any banners left, many of their sprues have multiple banners on them. Put that banner pit on the handle of a big choppa (even some of the regular AOBR choppas work) and you've got yourself a banner. As for boss poles - as soon as you've bought more than one box of boyz you should be drowning in them,

The best way to beat necrons is always to get up close and personal asap. Darting from cover to cover is crucial and the use of your Waagh! movement bonus is also incredibly important. If you dont you will get shot to shred. I still havnt lost a single game to orks with my newcrons. Its seems quite hard to play them from an ork perspective.
