Well apparently Ex Illis is still making minis. Although I suppose metal is easier to make anyways. Lucifer, the fallen angel. I'd thought he'd be taller

Well, it's a new release, in the sense that it was produced over a year ago, and made available only to their BEK program members who earned enough points through signing up new members. It is now available for sale, but it is my understanding that the models are old stock that has been in storage for some time. It's still a dead game that just won't admit it to itself.

Well, the sculptor decided to depart from the nuanced facial expression that the concept artist established and go with "world staring contest champion".

1/10 for actual model. Anyone else lol'd when they saw the wings? It looks like it was made of playdough.

It is a truly terrible. The concept art is cool though.
The company should be ashamed of even releasing a picture of that mini to the public.

Wow. This cements my impression of this game as horribadibble. I got a demo at a rinky-dink store in DAB that tried to convince me it was the future. Nothing about that game was interesting or engaging. This model is just a big poop cherry on a turd sundae.

The whole "have a computer program/phone app do all the calculations instead of dice rolls, have persistent stats which are tracked globally" thing is a neat idea, and I hope someone does something like it in the future and have it take off, but Ex Illis just wasn't that interesting of a game.

The "wargaming 2.0" thing is a big turn off for me, but a couple of their kits are decent looking and alright value.

I'm just really not into the idea, but only becase Ex Illis is the only example of it that I've gotten. Takes a lot of the "fun" out of the game, and I frankly don't like the lack of transparency in the rules and results calculations.

A couple of the kits were fantastic. The giant with the cage in his chest with the scythe was fething beautiful.

While they can spin that however they want, the cynic in me just sees that as forcing video-game style DRM on miniatures in an effort to clamp down on the secondary market. If they had printed rules for you to use, there would be no downside to selling your minis (as there is none in any other "1.0" style minis game). Since you have to activate your minis to make them usable in the online calculator/sim and the code is just usable once, this steers people away from second hand purchases towards new ones. When I brought up the DRM, there were some vague promises of having an automated system to transfer them over to new users and telling people to use some 30 day trial thing for the minis in the meantime.
It also didn't help that their big Gencon debut on Dakka was an obviously false planted "leak" that was part of a 10+ forum campaign press release for their big mini (which they subsequently lied about), that their website wiki called minis gamers elitist nerds, and that the owner of the company trolled the forum when people said the base didn't look very detailed. Mediocre minis backed up by a horredous idea and needlessly aggressive management... good bye to bad rubbish.

I had completely forgotten the DRM, and the rest of that stuff, really.
I'm glad I didn't buy any of this. At first I thought it was great. The idea that there is a mini game that I can use my iPhone to supplement really appealed. For instance, I have the Munchkin app, which allows me to "cheat" in game. It always adds to the game in a good way.
When I tried a demo or two, I could not believe how mediocre the game was. I was already at a store I wasn't fond of (owner is oddly anti- GW), and was bored to tears. The DRM thing made me say "No thanks" in a big way.
They've already had to close shop once. Do they think that new models that look like this will help business?

It's a noble idea in that it's almost Blood-Bowl-meets-Total-War in a way. Your units will fight, gain experience, and their stats will increase the more you use them. If they lose members, their stats decline towards the original stating values.
That being said, the whole system came off as a form of DRM and the owner's attitude rivals that of Battlefoam.

...I can't think of anything I could possibly use this mini for. Is he modeled off Michael York playing the anti-Christ in the Omega Code? His demon wings popped out and everything. Hmm.

To me, the most damning thing about Ex Illis is the use of zones. Neither tabletop games nor computer games need to limit the battlefield to 20 discrete blocks, but Bastion managed to create a new game that is directly inferior to both of its parents. It's like building an amphibious car that can't float and can't drive.

Ironically, one of the common jokes about the failure that was the amphicar was its handling felt like you were driving a boat on land and trying to float a car in water. I do see the parallels between that and Ex Illis.
