Subject: Citadel finecast model opinions?

Hey guys, so I'm fairly new to the hobby and recently bought my first Citadel finecast miniature, the Ork Painboy with the Grot Orderly. However when I opened it up and took a look at it I noticed that it seemed like it hadn't come out of the mold properly. The syringe needle was missing the top of it so it looked like a half cylinder almost....(if you can even imagine that). Not only that but the knife the Grot was holding had actually split in half. Now, I don't mind so much because I was able to glue the knife back together and I can get over the syringe but I was just wondering is this kind of thing common with the finecast models and has anyone else had any other problems like this?
Thanks!

It is common, and GW is usually good about replacing the model. However, the replacements usually have the same defects, so it becomes a bit tedious. I have personally avoided Finecast entirely.

I had issues with Finecast on my first model personally, but my second was a lot better. They've improved mostly (from what I've seen) since the initial batch...sounds like you just might have gotten a bum model.
They also have Liquid Green Stuff for those little minor bubbles and such, which is a godsend.

I have two of the same mini that differ by 1-2mm in depth. The smaller one is the screwed up one.
When they are good they are good and when they are bad terrible.
GW policy seems to be to replace the crappy ones and let you keep them.
I got 8 sternguard for the price of 5.

I've bought many a finecast from GW and they've been both good and bad. Most of the finecast have come perfectly moulded with only a few air bubbles at the bottom of the figure where you don't see. Any bad casts I've taken to my local GW and they've torn through every box in the shop to get me the best casts available.

I got a Corteaz and a Lord Commisar about a month after Finecast released (July 2011?) and they were both fine. I did get them from a GW store (Lakeside) and all the others seemed okay.
Had a look in a big independent reatiler in London last week and the Krell model I was looking at had so much flash on it I couldn't say whether it was okay or not so i didn't buy it.
Seems to be pot luck wht you get.

So far I've bought the nurgle Daemon Prince and a box of Plague Marines, and they have their errors. I contacted GW and asked if they could replace one arm on the Prince, since it was messed up, and they told me to go to the store at which I had bought it. But since they don't keep anything finecast in stock, it would take 3-4 weeks to get it replaced, and I might end up with another bad cast, so I just bit the bullet on this one.
I just wanted them to send me a new arm, but oh well - since it's nurgle, it's not that big of a deal - but had it been something else, I probably would have gotten it replaced, even if it would be taking forever.

In the small sample of purchases I have and have seen friends make I think that GW stores are getting best pick out of batches.

To the OP; exchange it - don't accept a substandard product because you can get over it. The problems are common and will remain so for as long as the majority of customers suck 'em up.

Yes, Finecast are a bit hit and miss. I ordered a Draigo and Crowe and they were both fine, but the Marneus Calgar and Honour Guard box set was terrible. Have to agree with Raumkampfer that altho GW has excellent no-questions-asked-and-no-returns-required replacement policy, this does not mean the replacement will not have similar defects..... in my case, GW mailed me 2 new boxes of Marneus which turned out to be just as bad as the original one I had, and in the end I just picked out sufficient ok parts from all 3 boxes to get a proper set.
From what other people are saying about their bad experiences with Finecast in the forums, it looks like the ones based on old moulds (i.e. minis which used to be metal now Finecast) had a greater failure rate, whereas new moulds seem to be doing ok most of the time.

Do not let GW fob you off. Sub standard product is sub standard product.
If they say return it to store tell them it was a present and you don't know where it was bought.

Yeah return it! Forge world stuff seems to be of slightly higher quality but can still be a bit 'hit and miss'. Try and pick up the old metal versions off ebay is sometimes an alternative, very easy to strip the paint off them too.

I think the point is that if you return it to a store you should get an instant replacement.
By post you have to wait.

with finecast, its best to try and find the metal version first and then risk a failcast if you cant find what your looking for.

I bought a Jump pack chaplain day one and the pauldren was folded slightly- replaced no problems.
Bought a box of stern guard months later - was flawless.
I wish they were all good because I found it good to work with, would I buy it online? No.
Would I buy it in a store I could open it in front of the clerk? Yes.

I'm going to pretty much echo everyone else here.
I've built and painted a Necron Lord and Huron Blackheart.
The Necron Lord had some pieces pretty tenuously joined and some air bubbles, that was about it. All in all, it was a breeze to assemble and paint. No real issues though the model did take me longer to get ready than others. That was also my first time using Liquid Greenstuff, so I tend to put that more on using not one, but two new materials than the model itself.
Huron Blackheart was another matter. Most of the model was fine, but there were two main issues.
First, the right arm had lots of releasing agent still on it. That wouldn't have been a huge issue except that no other part of the model had any releasing agent left on. That caused me to have to wash and repaint the piece. Not the end of the world, but it was a paint.
Second, there were casting defects in the body. Because Huron is pretty beat up in terms of the sculpt, I had some issues figuring out what was battle damage and what was miscasting. In the end, I filled what I figured was best and worked from there. Honestly, that was my biggest issue. Had I worked on the pewter miniature, I would have known the mini and been able to correct the issues pretty easily (I feel). The problem arises in that Huron is a special character. While I may paint more than one of him, the chances aren't great that it'll happen.
Anyway, that's my Finecast review as it were. I'm really still on the fence. That being said, I've a backlog of models to paint, so I'm probably going to handle them before I get much more. Hopefully, that will give GW the time to get the bugs out of Finecast.

Are they just as good about returns when they are bought online if picturse are supplied?
I'm thinking about buying the finecast Green Knight online as I love the model and ebay didn't turn up any of the old metal ones.

I have only returned stuff to stores. Mostly they replace the missing bit from another kit.
I have noticed that if you act like you are fine with handing the incomplete thing back for a new one they give you the faulty kit too.
I once got two exorcists from warhammer world store because the organists hand was missing.
I would guess it's the same deal if you deal by phone and e-mail; it just depends on who you get through to and how genuine you sound.
Be nice , use the operator's name and show willingness to compromise.

Uhhh FW remains a better product many many times over. I just got in an order of over 500 dollars worth of FW and I have not seen one single flaw in all the packs.
