The March 2012 issue of FineScale Modeller has an extremely, extremely comprehensive set of articles about airbrush maintenance and how to address specific problems both with the airbrush itself and how to assess your paint mix... has visual examples too along with the cause and solution.

I find this very useful and I have a bit of experience, for a beginner it could be a life-saver...

Check it out!

I had always poo poo'd this magazine/etc., but over the years I've gotten so much more into the modelling and now I look at it...I need to subscribe to this!

I noticed in their store you can buy back issues (currently feb. is in there, but not march) for 5.95. Think I might have to subscribe and then buy this back issue. Nice catch tom!

I have a subscription, I kind of regret it a bit. Not because it isn't quality stuff, but it is a bit repetitive in a lot of ways. Occasionally, there is some real gold for tutorials and step by steps, but mostly it is Military kit reviews which I would assume doesn't appeal to most of us.

They do tend to release annual type publications about specific aspects, airbrushing, model prep, weathering or whatnot. I would definitely look into these first, and the particular issue I mentioned is of special interest as well. Otherwise, I would recommend picking up individual issues that have something specific you are interested in as opposed to a sub.

My local library carries this magazine and a bunch of back issues. You might want to check if yours does too.

It looks like you can buy the Kindle or Nook versions online, if you don't want to look for a print version.

Great call! I just checked and my local library does as well! This way I can go look through it and decide if I want to buy the nook version.

They do something like this every 6 months, so I think it was in a magazine 2 months prior

No joke. This is one of their most commonly printed articles. I have a subscription(worth it...for the most part), and I have far more articles on airbrush maintenance and "FAQs" than I should.

Although your showing up to tell a bunch of happy people why they shouldn't be happy is no surprise lately Kan, you're misleading people with your desire to throw in a negative.

The sections in here are quite comprehensive compared to anything but their airbrush annual. On top of that, it is very thorough and step by step, covering things that yes, there have been other articles on, but you would have to but 3-4 other issues to get the info of this one.

I have all FineScale has ever done on AB'ing (at least as far back as their archive goes) and a subscription for the last year and a bit.The 2nd article with illustrations showing the 8 ways paint can go screwy out of the airbrush, with illustrations, is not something I have seen from them before, or even listed together anywhere else. You can generally find info on 3 of the 8 spray problems shown, but the other 5 are harder to come by. And frankly, the illustrations help as there is no set terminology for 'speckly edge spray', you kind of have to show it to understand what is for me at least, a very familiar problem. Although I would have called it poor atomization.

I see more questions related to spray problems in here than anything else, people rarely come in asking 'how do I do modulated airbrush work on a tank?'... generally, it's ' my paint is speckly help!.

So frankly, if I were to recommend 1 issue, especially for beginners to get that was strictly maintenance related, this would be it.

But thanks for coming in to say 'they talk about airbrush maintenance a lot' and all as if that has any bearing on whether this particular issue is useful, and also offering no other/better solutions. Helpful.

Gathering the Informations.

I'm not quite sure what part of my post was "Happy? DON'T BE!".

Airbrush maintenance IS one of the most common things they publish. To suggest otherwise is misleading. I have sequential issues starting from December 2009 to current. I have a few out of sequence issues from November 2004 and September 2008.

Out of all those, every March is affectionately what I like to call "Airbrush March". It's also worth mentioning that they commonly answer these same questions in the "Reader Mail" sections, and more than that there's the website and forums associated. I'd also like to mention that I DO point people towards Fine Scale Modeler when they ask about hobby magazines.

But hey. Clearly, "they talk about airbrush maintenance a lot" is not helpful in a thread about airbrush maintenance.

This post isn't about airbrush maintenance, it's about a particularly helpful specific issue of FineScale Modeller.

Nothing you said had any bearing on that. If you have a better issue to reference. Do it. If you have a website that is better, do it. If you want to support this particular issue by pointing out how it is good, do it. If you want to ask questions about it, or why I would recommend it more than other issues of FSM, do it.

Popping in to say oh they already did this two months ago (which they didn't actually), implying it is a reprint they do constantly, saying the magazine is kind of ok but you have more airbrush articles than you would like? Nothing to do with it. Link your points to the particulars of this issue, and you would be fine. We will finish this discussion via PM.

I have read this pub since I came across it's second issue in 1983. While it's focus is more toward the "mainstream" modeler, almost everything printed can be translated to the modeling we do for games.

I have found that every time they do a "repeat" subject the article has been updated to reflect current standards. With airbrushes the earliest articles seldom mentioned acrylic paint, at that time it was strictly solvent based enamels and lacquers. The brushes were Pasche and Badger. Now days we have a wider choice of brushes and paints so the articles are reflecting today's equipment, so even though it feels like been there done that, there is always something new.
Just my 2 cents.

I was just in my local WHSmiths and they had several of the Feb issue, so if they dont have it, they must be able to at least order it.

Probably just have to wait a few weeks before the March issue is on the shelves.
