This has been posted and asked about many times. Also, theres a rumor going around that the game has been shelved as well. Which would suck big time

Nah, that rumor was purely based on news from different company that had nothing to do with it. It came about with the news that THQ was closing their kiddy department. Apparently people saw that as: AMAGAWD THQ IS DONE FOR!

Heh, figures, if DM got shelved, I think quite a few people on this site might end up shedding that one manly tear we are allowed in times of great emergency

I think KC may be talking about this "rumor."

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115677-THQ-Needs-Help-With-Warhammer-MMO

While the game in development promises to be a high-quality consumer offering, because of the large financial commitment and associated risks, we are being realistic about our resources and we are actively seeking a partner for this compelling MMO

They're very low on money and looking for a cash infusion to keep the project going.

Yeah ... no. Unfortunately, Imperial Guard wouldn't be playable, which has lowered my interest for this game somewhat. The closest you could get would be playing the Assassin class, which is apparently supposed to start out as a somewhat "guardsman'esque character".

That said, it may also be worth noting that THQ's response to the whole controversy was pretty dodgy, given that they did not specifically state that Dark Millennium is still "go" but rather that they, and I quote, "have not made any decision regarding the planned MMO".
In essence, it isn't yet axed, but it sounds as if it's not safe either. Probably depends on how much money they manage to come up with. For what it's worth, DMO is probably one of the projects they are least likely to part with, given the cost already spent on it as well as the potential success that comes with the name of the franchise. At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if it gets shut down either, though.

Here's the thing. An MMO is a huge cost investment and a huge cost risk. A company like THQ is currently in a very precarious situation. They aren't dead, but the risk that they could get KO'd is rising fast and an MMO is a risk I honestly don't think they should be taking, especially when the 40k franchise, while a moderate success is an iffy financial venture. The fantasy MMORPG tanked pretty hard and they can certainly ensure a community using the IP they will need more than that to really make the game as profitable as it needs to be.

^Probably 50% speculation : /

As much as I'd love an MMO in the 40k universe I have a feeling this will be awful.

An MMO could also be the company's salvation. THQ isn't in THAT dire of straits, it's just that htey haven't had a huge blockbuster-- just some decent selling games combined with bad press from the rumor mongers.

Depends on the model it goes with and how they execute it. Pay to play will only work if the game is somewhat amazing, unfortunately it will forever be related to WoW because of it when people "discuss" its faults. A model similar to Guild War's where you pay for the game then can play it however much you want is the likely solution, of course with a micro transaction system built into it to give it long term sustainability. Could take a page from DDO (I know it failed and went to micro transaction ) where the expansions and such can be available more conviniently in the cash store with maybe a slight discount on the physical version. They make more off of it that way as they don't need to make packaging. However the physical would then likely have a draw like an art book for collectors.

Either way if I play I'll be Eldar as my general disdain for idiots would fit my character entirely. Although I generally like to go with a more supporting role and throw out heals and such, I find it's not all too rare for it to seem masochistic at times.

Yea, reading that post with some of the updates to the game style, Im not so sure on the shooting/melee mechanics. It could be really good, but first impressions on hearing how they work...I dunno.

But a MekBoy sure sounds like it could be fun.....same with the MadDok. I could totally see myself being a MadDok, I love "healing" types

Ironically, Orks are probably the faction that'd be the most fun for me, simply because all the kiddies won't attract so much attention when it's considered standard behavior for the species.

I'm big on immersion and I seriously could do without bunny-jumping Space Marines yelling LOL, or cyb0ring Sororitas. Fortunately, the latter won't be possibly. I'm actually relieved people can't play Sisters there, as it would only lead to me bashing my head on my keyboard again and again. I'm well versed at simply ignoring stuff, but even that has limits, and I'm quite certain 98% of all people picking characters such as Space Marines (or Sisters, were they available) would not be able to appear as such in terms of behavior.

It's an issue that all MMOs have, but I think with 40k's grimdark setting where everyone is supersrs it would be even more apparent. To be honest, I'd actually prefer a combat-centric multiplayer FPS to the MMO, as nobody would have time to feth things up there and we can all concentrate on blowing gak up.
Something like Battlefield, just with boltguns, jetpacks and Leman Russes etc.

I expect this to happen. If I play this mmo

Considering how dumb the rest of the populace is. If this becomes a WOW killer then it would be a bunch of idiots playing space marines.

I don' think thre's such thing as a WoW killer. People will continue suckling that rotten teat for a good long while now. It's like trying to kill a troll without fire or acid.

Blizzard is the WoW killer, admittedly there is a powerful weapon capable of doing huge amounts of damage to WoW (much like flaming acid to a troll) that is linked in my sig.

Guys this a thread to discuss Dark Millenium, not to have an MMO pissing contest.

Seriously though, WoW breaks almost any attempt to make an MMO...
It's a less than stellar part of the industry.

I'm not going to fight about it, I play EVE online and WoW. I like variety, people should respect others tastes.

No but i don't hope people will die playing WoW either.
I can criticize McDonald's for the changes some can attribute to people's health and food in general which are fairly negative.
I can likewise criticize WoW for changes they have wrought in the gaming industry which can also be called negative though they may have done positive things as well.

Yep, if DMO became a Block Buster sub based MMO THQ and Relic would be set for a very, very long time.
