Short news article, but a decent laugh.

Longtime eBay seller James Labrecque starts each of his listings with the same warning: "WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS." He's half right. Labrecque sold a locked floor safe on the auction site for $122.93, but the buyer found $26,000 cash inside. "I thought it was empty [...] So I put it on eBay" Labrecque told WMC-TV. "I feel like the stupidest idiot in the world." He has reached out to the Tennessee-based buyer, asking for half of the money. The buyer declined, quoting Labrecque's own caveat back to him. Hey, at least you got positive feedback!

When I first read it I thought it said $26.00, and I was wondering why someone would make a fuss over 13 bucks.

But 27,000... thats one lucky dude.

The seller would be SOL if I bought that safe, you would need a crowbar and a very ticklish feather to get me to part with it.

The crowbar is for smacking you over the head and the ticklish feather is for opening the safe, right?

Maybe you hang out with immature women. Maybe you're attracted to immature women because you think they'll let you shpadoink them.

Arguably, the seller has a point i.e. What you see is what you get - you couldn't see the money inside the safe during the auction, ergo it wasn't part of the sale

The caveat means caveat emptor, buyer beware and is used to cover errors in the auction as 'sold as seen'.

When you buy a box you buy the outside and the inside of it. Or else one could sell an empty box as a product 'sold as seen'. People have in the past done this, but normally veil the fact they are selling the box in the auction list.
The buyer has full right to keep the money, the big question is, is it taxable?

Damn, sucks for that guy. If it were me, I wouldnt split it either, when you sell something as is, there isnt any wiggle room. I couldnt buy a safe, have it fall apart and then complain that the guy wont refund my money.

LOL. Oh god that's hilarious. I wouldn't split it either. It's his own policy, he should stick to it.

....Who buys a locked safe?

For the matter how did the seller get a hold of said safe in the first place? Why was he dumb enough not to open a safe that he got a hold of rather than just having the thing opened by a locksmith then selling the thing with its code? Least then if it was empty it could have sold for more cash.

Stupid people. ¬¬

The seller could of picked it up from a storage locker or house sale, and not felt like paying a smith to open it. Most the time when a safe is found/bought at an auction they are empty, and therefore a waste of money to open.

I guess they didn't watch any of those programs that they show on the UK tv channel Quest then? Youknow the ones where guys buy up storage outlets and sell what they find. People really lack an entrepeneurial common sence. =/
