hi, i just started dwarfs and was wandering why everyone is saying to go with the GW and not the shields. i understand the difference, but my question is this: the book says you may ALSO take shields as well as saying you may ALSO take GW. so can you take both the shield+GW, or no? i know you cant use the GW and the shield in cc, but they will do much better surviveing shooting, as well as haveing that 3+ save in cc if you use the shield (heavy armour+shield+hand weapon/shield.) its the same points for a quarreller, but you get GW and shield saves.

Shields will just add some extra armour vs shooting. Your correct in that you can use it in combat, but you would be wasting your GW for it. Plus, in CC your hand weapon and shield would give you a 6+ parry save, which is a ward save that can only be used in cc. You would not add armour on top of that. So you would either get heavy armour (5+) and GW, or heavy armour (5+) and a parry save (6+ ward). Hope that helps.

You've got a couple rules outdated at this point. If you have a weapon other than a hand weapon, you *must* use it- so if carrying a hand weapon, shield, and great weapon, you must swing the great weapon in combat. Furthermore, the hand weapon/shield bonus is now a 6+ ward parry save.
So in essence buying shields for your great weapon warriors simply gives them an extra "pip" of armor save against shooting and magic. Not a terrible investment, but most times you are trying to find points for things elsewhere, these are the first to go.

Wait, what? I'm pretty sure you'd get heavy armour + shield (4+), and a parry save (6+).

Yes, Heavy Armor (5+) and a Shield(+1 AS) would indeed be a 4+ AS not a 3+. So in CC if you have HW and Shield you would have a 4+/6++

ok, thanks. i had only seen last edition rulebook so far and that was what happened with the shiled in cc. the ward save must have replaced it. i was just hopeing to get my warriors to be more survivable but have the ability to kill stuff better.
