Hey guys,

For only wargaming maybe 4 months or so, I'm still a bit wet behind the ears but I know by now how risky deep striking can be. The only thing more devastating than failing something like that is losing an ethereal.

My question is: How viable is a Crisis HQ set up with the following configuration, especially if I deep strike him?

Commander (Shas'o), Cyclic Ion Blaster, Flamer, Multitracker, VRT (Hit&Run), and Stim Injector (FNP)

On paper, it seems pretty powerful against (mostly) melee teams like Tyranids. 4 wounds, 3+ save, and FNP to keep him alive, plenty of cheap shots and a flamer to wipe hordes, and H&R to get the hell out when assaulted, allowing for even more firepower. Plus you can't go wrong with the JSJ tactics assuming you're not wiped before you can H&R.

I suppose the list would also include a second HQ with marker drones to keep back and support the rest of the squad. Terrible idea or decent idea?

Check out what the Pathfinder Devilfish will let you do if you DS within LOS of them.

You have a REALLY expensive throw away unit there, why not just keep him cheap and run a single suit ?

You could run a xv8 'ui with tl Burst cannons and a flamer for 46.

Although the most common deepstriker is intended to hit AV14 and uses Fusion.

The tough bit about melee teams like Nids or orks, is they will use proper spacing to nullify the AFP (which is what I assume you meant, as the CIB is not appreciably better than a pair of TL Burst Cannons).

In my opinion deepstiking works sometimes but I have often felt that I need as much firepower in the first few turns as possible, so one of your best BS unit held in reserve to me doesnt seem a great idea. I normally equip mie with MP and PR so thats 3 power shots hitting on 2's which you are potentially forgoing for atleast a turn likely to be more. Don't get me wrong I deepstrike suits in occasionally but most of the time I like to have a sweeping army that is deployed and sweeps left or right to make the enemy move further and further. Hope this helps. Btw pathfinder devilfish is a great idea if you decided to deepstrike as its a direct hit on deepstrike in LOS so eliminates the danger of mishap.

Pathfinder Devilfish let you re-roll the scatter dice if they have LOS to the deep striking unit. It is not an automatic hit.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

A deep striking commander needs to do a job that you can't do otherwise. What can you take on your suits that you may need closer? Fusion blasters, is basically it. If you're getting into flamer range on your own, your dead.

Now I've played games against armor guard where I deep striked all my battlesuits, but to do so you need pathfinder devilfishes. 2 or more. Hide them first turn, move out before 2nd so you can see it from your deep strike points.

For the HQ you are working on, I would say to take an airbursting fragmentation launcher and then a twin linked flamer, plus of course hard wired mutlitracker. Toss in some shield drones for kicks. This suit will kill hordes dead, allowing you to focus on the rest of his nonsense. Think about iridium armor btw.
