Howdy Dakkaites. Im playing around with the idea of making a Hulk copy of my own. Ive played in the past but the only guy around with an offical set moved out of town. Im really not up to spending the $300 plus for a copy off the internet so I thought putting some effort into a set wouldnt be too bad. One thing holding me back is the fact that I tend to take on projects too big to handle. Is this something worth persuing or am I just going to get bogged down on how much is actually involved. Let me know what you think.

The tiles are the same size in the other two editions of SH.
SH3.0 just has tiles twice as thick (however, all of the jigsaw points match up with the other two sets also).
There are copies of the tile layouts and sheets floating around the net at various spacehulk blogs. Foamcard is relatively cheap and can be used to make the individual 'tiles'.

Really, I though they changed the scale on this last version.

They also normally go for a high price also.
Buy a third edition tile set, they turn up every now and then. Then add stealers and marines and download the rules .pdf from specialist games.

I made my 1st hulk game with old matchbox tracks for corridors and plates from similar matchbox sets for the rooms. Then I got the DOOM board game for cheap and use the tiles from that, added bonus is that if you have the DOOM board game you can take the mini's from it, add some Grey Knights and play the Grey Knights variation.
Or play those boards as a Space Crusade variant if you have Space Crusade.

I played 2nd ed space hulk on grided paper XD but realistically i also made carboad cutouts back when they had printed ones (before the 3rd ed re-launch).
So no i don't think it's a ludicrous amount of work.

If you have the time, willpower, money and motivation, you can get plaster of Paris moulds from Hirst Arts or similar and then cast up and paint your own set of 3D corridors and whatnot.

I agree with Filbert. If you want to start a spacehulk ring, you need a sexy table, and the weight of those pieces also means that they're not likely to move when someone knocks the table or a slight breeze comes through. It might take up time to assemble everything, but, chill out, relax, and take your time with it. If it's an attractive table, it will attract players.
Genestealers are easy to find, and so are terminators. Especially if you are patient enough to wait for the item in question to make it into the daily deal section on Miniwargaming's website(35% discount.... 45% if you are a vault member). Genestealers and terminators are also decently easy to find on feebay and in dakka's swap shop and bartertown.
Memory says if you do some digging, you will also find some decent user-created modules for space hulk. Add those in to keep people coming back, and add custom tiles and custom missions. There's a space hulk thread or seventeen on dakka, check them out.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from. |

If you want a really simple set-up to play on, why not draw out your maps/scenarios on the back of wallpaper. You can get a roll of wallpaper for a few quid (or wallpaper under-paper, even better, no texture and even cheaper!) and then just draw out your grid using a felt-tip pen and a ruler.
Just a suggestion...
