I was at Wal-mart yesterday and was picking up some primer when i noticed that 90% of the Krylon Primers have been replaced with a new Paint/Primer combo can. I sopoke to the manager to see if they were getting any new can of the Primer in and he told me that the Primer from Krylon was being phased out and that they wont be picking getting much more in but instead will be replacing it wit the combo cans. To say the least, i was angry, i also bought about 3 cans of each color.

For those of us who prime models (that should be everybody) this is alarming.

Krylon Primer is REALLY inexpencive ($3) and is very good quality. Much better than GW and at least as good as Army Painter or other designer Primers that regularly sell for around 15 bucks a can.

I swear by Krylon primers and while they dont come in the designer colors, they come in the 3 colors you need and that is all that matters (black, grey, white)
Let hope that this is not the end of what i consider one of the best buys around as far as paints go.

So why is the white/grey/black primer+paint bad? I used the black on some Necron stuff and it looks fine.

When compared to the standard primer it is a different surface texture when it is dry. When you prime a model you are looking for a paint that give a surface that is good to take paint. The paint combo does not do that. Instead it give you an almost sealed surface much like a normal spray paint.

As it says, it is no longer just a primer. it is a combo style paint. It is a bit thicker and has more of a tendency to cover details. Its also more expensive.

I have noticed over the last few years that Krylon Primer has been getting harder to get. I like the option of the 3 colors of primer and love the price. I wonder if only Wal-Mart is phasing out the primers due to limited space or if Krylon themselves are phasing out the primers.....if they are gone that will suck.

I do what the voices in my wifes head say...

Yeah primer is getting really hard to find in general. It's as if they think people paint on bare metal

This really sucks for me. I've been using the Krylons primer for a year now and have been quite pleased with it. Guess I'll have to go primer hunting again.

From what the manager has told me is that it is Krylon that is doing the Phase out, not Wal-mart. But being that Wal-mart is the largest distributor of Krylon paints it probably does have to do with Walmart also.

the paint + primer is supposed to have a smooth finish, like that of paint, but just primer is supposed to have 'tooth' for the following paint to adhere to more strongly.

So the combination of paint + primer does make it unsuitable for use as a primer, some other brand of just primer will undoubtedly give a better result than the combo cans.

Personally I use thinned out artists gesso sprayed on with an airbrush as primer on my mini's, it can take 2 coats for coverage though (particularly with white), but id much rather do that than pay GW for their spray cans of extortion (I'm pretty sure they have an extremely unreasonable mark up on those).

well primers are still available on the krylon website and the dual range is new and fancy, plus walmart is for your average joe who wants to paint something in or around the home, its not for model makers or people who would look for separate primer and paint.I seriously doubt you have been given all the facts, your more likely still going to be able to buy it but your gonna have to look further than your super market.

it is pretty riddiculous, just round the corner from the local GW store in my town, there is a paint sprayer and vehicle panel repair supply shop.
GW sell their spray cans here for about £10 a can for black, white or clear (actually used to be £4 for the exact same can all of 10-12 years ago I'm sure)... in the paint shop they have just about every type of paint going (mostly polyurethane for cars) for a much more reasonable price than GW could ever consider... my advice to people is to buy things from specialist shops... Games Workshop do not specialise in paint, they must be subcontracting it and then adding their mark-up ontop of what the supplier has charged them. Does any one know what paint company GW use for their spray cans? I'd wager its possible to buy the same product without it saying 'citadel' on the side

I don't know about white, but if you're using black, or a camo color as your primer, go to the Krylon "camoflage" series and use them. They have "fusion" tech, so they adhere well to almost any surface, and the finish is extremely flat and provides good "tooth" for painting.
http://www.krylon.com/products/camouflage_paint_with_fusion_technology/

I've had good results with the rustoleum camoflage sprays as well.

To think I was going to go buy their primer sooner or later. I wonder if the company would reconsider if people make a demand not to cancel the discontinuation of krylon primer?

Well, there's always fusion for plastic, but I don't know if that works just as well.

I've been using Krylon for white, but for the most part I've almost completely switched over to the Army Painter colored sprays. But that said, guess I better stop by home depot and get a couple cans while they still have em

Yeah, the purpose of a primer like that would be more for outdoor applications and other projects.
I can see spray painting plastic or metal patio furniture or a wooden sign with something like this, but not plastic or metal miniatures.

If i may add in. I have a very small time painting buisness here in town (have not gone internet yet) I can't see spending 3$ on a can of paint, when the Store brand (wal-mart) The name is "Fast drying Spray Paint" in a blue can. it's .97$ to 1.07$ a can depending on color. I have never had trouble with it. It lays even and the grey and white come out nice and crisp. And the Matt black comes out ina nice super even solid matt finish. It also does dry fast,up to way less then half a hour. Hope this lil bit of info helps out!

I called 1-800-4KRYLON.

They are not discontinuing their basic primer. Other U.S. retailers that carry their products are Ace/TruValue, Home Depot, Lowes, and K-Mart.

I asked the rep why their primer is so hard to find and he said that many people don't use primer and the retailers don't order it because the inventory turnover is too slow.

I've been using Dupli-Color with very good results. You can get it at Auto-Zone and Napa stores for about $6. It's more than Krylon, but still cheaper than GW, P3, and AP.

Cool, well that will teach me to never believe what the Derps at Wal-Mart say. Regardless it still seems that Walmart will be switching over to the combo paint. All we have in our town is a walmart so thats the only option i have.

Truth! I use the black much more often than the white, but both are excellent products. I think I pay under $4 a can.

The real disapointement for me regarding Krylon primers being less widely available is that I formerly used alot of their ruddy brown primer. It was the base color for my entire IG army, and great for terrain painting as well.

Which primer are you talking about, the primer+paint, or hardware store primers in general? The Primer+paint might come out thick (I've never tried it), but myself and many others have been using hardware store primers for years with excellent results.

This sounds like the stuff that I've used for years for white and black. I purchased mine from K-mart and I used to use it for grey and tan also, but they've stopped carrying those two colors in the store-brand around here. I've never had a problem with cheap sprays for white and black. As long as you don't overspray and follow the instructions (temp, humidity, etc) they will give you great results.

+1. At my Wal-mart it's called "Color Place" and still comes in a blue can. The one dollar primer works much better then the GW spray paint, err "primer", and coats perfectly fine.

The spray cans that GW makes is not primer.
It does not say "primer" anywhere on the can. They are classified as "Citadel Spray Paints" and individually called "White Spray" and "Chaos Black Spray"

The image you see of the white paint on their site is of the old can.

They're simply paint.
