Unlike an RPG, where I don't expect updates, I have always assumed rules updates to be one of the hazards of wargaming. When the new rules set comes out, if I want to play with everyone else, I'm going to have to switch over. There's not going to be much of a point in being the one guy refusing to change.

RPG's seem like they are the only area where refusal to switch editions you play is acceptable. (Totally acceptable. I still play Classic Marvel and Deadlands, SLA Industries under the original rules, and I still play 2e D&D.) For card games, war games, and every other aspect of the gaming industry I can think of, changing editions is automatic. I've never even met a holdout player who still played 3rd ed 40k, or 5th ed Magic: the Gathering.

That could, of course, just by my own perception on it. Interested to see how the poll turns out. If there is some significant support, I may consider changing sides. Good question Deadshot.

I agree, I know updates will come and it is just something I have to deal with and move on.

This, really. Even if I try to stay rooted in 5th, nobody else will.

No (or other).

As said, 5th Edition will be over. If 6th would (theoretically) be unplayably bad, people would probably gravitate to other games or sytems, both GW and non-GW (or just take a break from gaming) rather than go "back" to 5th.

5th ed isn't very fun so if 6th ed isn't better I'll go back to 2nd ed or focus on Heavy Gear or Infinity instead

6th can possibly be any worse than 5th.

If 6th did suck I'd go back to 3rd maybe 4th edition.

Heck maybe even 2nd.

But it's sure to be better than 5th on many levels, so, no.

Flames o' War, probably, since they don't have such restrictions on playing in tournaments with models bought from different companies.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

It's not as simple as saying "6th sucks I'm gonna play 5th!"

For one you need someone else to play with, and I think most people will switch to 6th no matter what.

If 6th sucks then I will actually just continue not playing it. My current state of affairs changes only if 6th edition is good.

I will play 6th with my league. If 6th sucks incredibly bad, I may occasionally play throwback games of 5th (or whatever edition we want to play for nostalgia's sake) when the mood strikes us.

5E is the worst rules set yet.....

If 6E sucks maybe I will play War machines or just watch the others play as I play at a GW store as well as independent game stores.

I think if it really sucks I can see some tournys keeping the 5th ed rule set.

I have done in the past is play past rule sets and its just a change of spice.

But in large I think 6th ed will be used all across the board.

Mostly no. Few yeses or others.

OK, lemme ask this as well. Do GW stores allow previous eds into be played there?

Wow, I remember seeing this EXACT same thread in 2008. Apparently, wargamers, much like lunch meat, do not get better with age.

If 6th edition is bad, I'll probably still play it.
If it's VERY bad, then I guess it's time to dust out the 4th edition rulebook.

If you didn't like 6th, why would you go back to the even more inferior 4th rather than just keep playing 5th?

I'm collecting the codicies for 3rd edition, got all from 4th and 5th. Same with rulebooks.
My buddies and I play 5th the most obviously, but we sometimes like to have few "back in the day" games.
Nothing like playing old Necrons with old 3rd ed glancing rules. My friend uses Imperial Guard doctrines that are now gone. Stuff like that.

I guest we will all carry on and go with the 6th, but my 5th ed rulebook is still on the shelf - and who knows? We might play it again sometimes.

But as a general rule - unless you're fixed on something with a bunch of like-minded friends, you have go with the flow - unless you switch to new rules, and change your army accordingly, you won't be able to play in local stores, tournaments etc... It just won't work.

I'll be playing sixth no matter what happens, because it has to be better for Chaos than the current one. Right?

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

Bookwrack:

He would play 4E because he thinks its better than 5E?

You are assuming that 5E is in fact better than 4E.... Which in MY opinion it is not.

5E is the largest pile of dung that 40k has become out of all 5 so far released rules..... Faster games mechanics are ok but at the loss of its soul, that is sadness.

Maybe I'll play Leakhammer?

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Hard to imagine them actually making the game better than 5th edition. They're so conservative with rules that it's unlikely they'd shake things up that much. And if they aren't shaking things up, they shouldn't fix what isn't broken.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I keep seeing "5th edition suck" and "5 edition is boring" Having never played 4th, what is so terrible? The game is quite enjoyable to me.
