So after seeing the third or fourth "Why does everyone hate Squats?" or "This is Why We Hate Squats!" thread, I thought I would take up a little poll to see how many people actually do hate the Squats. Now, this isn't a matter of wondering WHY people hate or don't hate the Squats. The question is, how badly do you hate Squats, based on the totality of their rules and models (or lack thereof), their background, and the people that are fans of them?

I hate Squats, mostly because I hate the fanbase that grew up around them after they were killed off.

My first real experience with the fanbase of the Squats was at a Games Day(2001? I think. It was around when the Doctrines Imperial Guard Codex was being previewed. Some of the information from that seminar was one of the first posts I had on on Old Dakka no less), when Andy Chambers was fielding questions from the audience. A Squat fan(I hesitate to say player, as the guy seemed fairly ignorant of a great amount of the models, etc that they had) kept interrupting everyone else to shout "WHY DO YOU HATE SQUATS". This individual was one of the most obnoxious people I've ever had the misfortune to hear speak, as when he finally got the chance to have his question answered--he and his chums were just elbowing each other and laughing.

Obnoxious, obnoxious person and sadly representative of the majority of Squat "fans" I've met down the years since then.

Disclaimer: I know not ALL Squat fans are obnoxious jerks. But sadly, the majority that I've met in person are--and it doesn't sit well with me.

I don't hate them or love them. They should have a place in 40k, and it seems that place is in the tau empire.

Fair opinion, Kan. I have similar feelings about an army that Games Workshop didn't give the axe to, so I sympathize. I myself am neutral erring on the side of postitive with regard to Squats. I feel something cool could have been done with them and they never got a fair shake. That being said, I only know one Squats player/fan, and he is everything you've said you hate about them and more.

I think the portrayal of Squats in Epic was the better way to show them, emphasising their use of technology and heavy duty vehicles. I think that was a more interesting identity for them.

EDIT

Of course, I suppose that now the Tau and Necrons fill the niche of the "tech" armies while the Guard are the fellows to see for heavy armour.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

They seemed cool, but I really don't care. Like many things that get a lot of flak, it's the fanbase surrounding it that causes hate.

I like them, but they're very of their time. They'd need a significant change to bring them into line, but I'd be interested to see what happened. I do think the word "hate" is thrown around a bit too much on these forums though, and is a bit strong when talking about tiny plastic and metal space dwarves.

They were too "cutesy" for 40k, as far as I'm concerned they may as well have been Keebler elves.

I like the Squats because, for me, they represent a better time in 40K, lol. Plus, there were some awesome models for them, and I don't even like Dwarves all that much. At least ones not named Tyrion.

I don't buy into most of the hate about them (sounds a lot like the rather idiotic hate the Ultramarines get; as in it makes no sense). They weren't any sillier than any other race at the time, and could have easily been kept around. And even if they didn't want to make a new Squat codex, they could have at least given them the brush-off Chapter Approved or White Dwarf treatment they did to the Sisters of Battle, or Chaos & Genestealer Cults, lol

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

IIRC, one of the Squat creators left GW and they were forced to discontinue.

That's a myth. The Squats existed well into 2nd Edition. It wasn't like they magically, and suddenly disappeared. It was a very gradual process.

I wouldnt say I hate them but I really dont care for them. They just seem... dumb, like REALLY out of place in the universe.

Im glad they are gone. However I arrived long after their time. Had I arrived during their time my opinion may have moved up to not give a damn or down to I actually hate them

I hate the squats, and I fully agree with Jervins Johnson and the rests' decision to cut them. They did not fit into the 40k universe. The main reason many like the squats is simply because "big evuuul GW" cut them out of the game. GW does, people hate. It's the same with all companies making games, consoles and stuff like that.

That and Squat players were bummed that their army was completely removed from the game. There's counts-as, but it's not quite the same.

My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

A lot of the people who pester GW with questions about the Squats aren't actually Squat fans, they are just trolls. Bitching about the Squats has become something of a past-time for warhammer trolls. I've played Squats, I know friends who played Squats, and I know people who would like to play Squats. We recognize that the army was cut by GW and they aren't likely to bring them back, but we also refuse to be happy about that. Even still, none of us go to Games Day or GW bunker openings and ask them where the Squats are.

...I go to Games Day and bunker openings and ask them why they don't have any fething pink in their paint line.

Part of me wonders what 40K would look like if there weren't Squat fans carrying the torch for their long lost army? Without the continuing poking GW gets from Squat fans (and obnoxious trolls), would the Dark Eldar have been given a new codex? They went nearly a decade between army books, but they weren't discontinued. Maybe GW didn't want to hear people bitching about both the Squats AND the Dark Eldar? So they updated the DE with a shiny new book.

Sisters of Battle, anyone? Okay, it's only a White Dwarf codex, but it's still more than the Tau have gotten... Maybe GW didn't want to hear "Where are the nuns with guns?"

And if you think teenage boys who play self-flagellating bondage nuns with machineguns would be LESS obnoxious than Squat players, you're delusional. (btw, I happen to be fond of the SoB... working on an army for my GF at the moment, so don't read too deeply into the self-flagellating bondage nuns bit...)

Tau are allegedly getting a new codex "soon"... though GW seems to work on geological time, so "soon" could be a decade or more away. Maybe GW didn't want to hear Tau players complain about being cut.

GW cut the Squats. That was over fifteen years ago. It was also the last time GW cancelled an army for 40K.

Corellation isn't causation, but I can't help but think the trolls are helping to keep 40K from being just Orks vs Meq.

I don't like them. They in my opinion don't fit in modern 40k, before Squat fanboi pounces on me with the argument "But what of the Space Elves and Skeletons and Daemons?" I'll answer you, the Squats could not be advanced for a reason, they didn't fit into a 40k that was fantasy related, the others fit because they could be molded into newer more independent races. I'm tired of these pointless Squat love threads because they will not be coming back, there won't be another Squat codex.

The name Squat itself is ridiculous, do they squat in people houses?

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

Psh, nobody important ever played Squats
I couldn't care either way about them (don't remember if I posted that already, forgive me if I did)-I'm not for or against them and their removal. I don't think the army fit, from what I hear, but I also don't really like the idea of any army being removed, as it takes away options from players. That said, an army of short, hairy bikers wearing German helmets (like Will Ferrel wore in The Producers) covering their upper faces and a leather jacket with "Momma Squat loves me" would have me rolling on the floor in stitches of laughter. On second thought, Squats are a silly thing. Right.

They really wouldn't fit into the current fluff.

It was ok in the old fluff, but as its evolved the Squats were clearly the odd man out(until the Tau came along)

the "Dwarf" archtype is also kinda taken by Space Marines/Imperium as a whole.

Dwarves have good armor, technology, are tough, and few in number. Space Marines take those points.

With that taken, the Squats would really just end up being Space Marines crossed with IG. And that would be boring.

As a result they had no niche to fit into.

Now, GW could have folded them into IG and just made them another Abhuman race in the Codex. Maybe a heavy armored Melee unit and some shooty unit.
