Hi. I wanted to draw attention to a kickstarter for a really great and innovative "new" miniatures game. I say "new" because Mobile Frame Zero Rapid Attack is the 10th anniversery edition of Vincent Baker's excellent Mechaton game, which I know some people here on Dakka have played and enjoyed in the past. Anyway, it's a badass mech strategy game using legos. I've played it few times over the years and always really enjoyed it, and I'm thrilled to be able to contribute to the Kickstarter to get the official rules book, which includes a whole bunch of instructions for making some amazing looking lego mechs. The game features new mech designs by lego mech builder Soren (here's his flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bricklovinfreakboy/)

So yeah.. if yu're looking for a new game to try out or want to support something a little unconventional please give Mobile Frame Zero a go!

Here's some pictures!

That last one is really cool! Not sure if I can bring myself to actually play with legos at my age, though

I'm pretty sure I have enough LEGO to make legions of these guys, this is awesome. Kind of reminds me of Brick Wars, which I think is the first real "wargame" that I played

This looks really, really awesome. I am very seriously considering a contribution. I'm also very shocked that any system could entice me on the same level as warhammer.

It could have something to do with the literal stacks of boxes of legos I have sitting around in storage (from my youth). Nevertheless, it's a very interesting idea.

This is intriguing, I will have to get my sons to check it out.
Ritides no shame in playing with Lego at any age, just embrace it lol you are already playing with toy soldiers so it isnt a great leap.

Hmm weird, I went to pledge $20 for the glossy book but it links me to amazon for payment and the link seems broken.

Kickstarter uses Amazon Payments, so if you have an Amazon account you can pay that way. If the link was broken I'd suggest trying again after refreshing your browser.

i love, this idea, too bad legos are expensive as hell here, even more so than GW, i would love to check the rules and give them a go. Cant seem to find a website with them though.

I honestly can't wait to have kids and introduce them to lego. More of an excuse to play with lego myself really

Cool idea although i wouldn't call it a miniature game. Its almost like an intro to table top gaming.

If I might be so bold, it's a miniature wargame that uses the basics of military tactics: shoot, move, communicate, and defend.

While it's certainly intro-friendly, the simplicity of the rules is put to best use when the players are applying tactical knowledge and flexibility. It rewards coordination, communication, and commitment.

Lol, too funny. The 12 gallons of legos my gramma saved for me/I saved for my kid can finally be put to good use again!! Got enough bricks for an entire cityscape!

THE FUN HAS BEEN DOUBLED!!!

Looks very cool.

Ummm... here's a few questions...

First, despite being kinda moot, what is the scale of the mechs?-Like are we suppose to imagine a person to be 1-brick tall?-2-bricks tall?-Or what? I don't think it matters too much for the mechs but for terrain, I think it does.

Second, the implication from everything is that a player uses about 5 mechs. Is that a solid "you get 5 mechs" or is it just an average sized "force"? What is the standard supported range of force size?

Third, are there size classes of mechs?-If so what are they? And how does that relate to the "model" size?-It appears the average size is about 10-bricks tall, 4-5-bricks wide.

Fourth, the rules appear to allow for the free form design and construction of your mechs... is that carried over into weapons as well?-Or are there fixed arsenal, where the player just says "this lego weapon represents the standard M10-Missile Launcher"?

Years ago I sold my legos to fund my 40k habit... the irony that I might sell some 40k to buy some legos.

You totally just asploded my head with this. Man, those are some amazing Lego mecha. And a Lego mecha combat game? Mind-blowing.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Heh. I just showed the Kickstarter page to my son, who is 11 and loves Lego, anime, and 40K, and he literally ran to his piggy bank and brought back £6 for either the PDF edition, or his half of the print edition if I decide to pitch in. I guess I will be playing this soon.

meh.

First I was excited about lego-mech potential, but then I noticed it was just rulebook-kickstarter, instead of not-lego mech-products.

I understand that you would not give out the manual for free, but is there like a mini intro manual (like the one on the ABR, so we can get an idea of how the game plays.

A quick Google search for Mechaton will give you lots of info and battle reports based on previous versions of the game. I'm not sure ho much this new version has changed, but I'm excited to find out!

My question Jake is, why does this kickstarter require $9000? I think I might be misunderstanding the premise; all you are doing is writing a game system based on Mechaton right?

I'm not the one writing or producing the game, so I'm not the one to ask. I just really like the game and want to support it. I'm sure Joshua can answer any questions about the Kickstarter. As a game designer and publisher I can tell you that games aren't cheap to produce and books aren't cheap to publish.

It looks like the $9000, is to get the money to do a print run of a printed copy of the rule book. Its probably enough to cover setup costs and some number of copies beyond the number of contributors.
