I was wondering what would be the best way to do dust on a space marines boots and bottem of the coat.

Not sure if it is the best way but I use weathering powders.

I use weathering powders too, id think they are probably the most realistic way.

The other way i can think of would be to very carefully sponge on some duty colours with... well... some sponge.

The foam you got in the back of blister packs is perfect. You just tear a little bit off, dip it in the paint, dab off almost all the paint on a paper towel and then carefully dab it where you want dirt and dust.
The most important thing is to make sure your only dabbing, not moving from side to side

Was talking to a friend on this and he suggested chalk pastels. Failing that, what about a very small amount of a foundation makeup?

For the Lion and Terra!

Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.

With finecast you can bypass the washing stage and throw them straight into the bin.

Or cut out the middleman and just flush some money down the toilet.

Don't quote me on this but I think chalk pastels and weathering powder are the same thing or at least very similar. I couldn't help you with the makeup question

Chalk Pastels are very similar to Weathering Powders and I tend to prefer the pastels, as they are cheaper and available in a wider range of colours.

Grab a 'Kemri Brown' sort of colour pastel, rub it on some paper and mix the resulting dust with some white spirit for a fresh dust effect.

I am currently taking commissions.

I havn't personally used foundation makeup (because I use weathering) but my friend uses it for all his tanks and it comes out really well.

Or for cheaper, just drybrush a couple of layers of brown down ther. It depends on whether you're after a dust-caught-in-crevices look or a more generally dirty/dusty coating on the bottom of the mini.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Not every shadow, but any shadow

Another technique is to spray a wash of diluted Tamiya Buff, it is a favourite with AFV modellers to give a yellow dust appearance.
