After years of playing and painting orks, i decided it's time for a change of colors... Chaos was my first army besides the beloved Space Orcs back in 1997 and I regret having it sold in 2001 ever since.
A Marauder Miniature LOC (http://www.solegends.com/marauder/mm952gdtzeentch.htm) is the sole survivor of my old army and I'm planning to use him as a Daemon Prince with the MOT.

I'll go mainly for Tzeentch and Khorne. The color- scheme for the CSM squads will be black with gold trimming, occasionally silver/bolt gun metal, yellow tubes (occasionally dark red) and lightning painted on the shoulder pads and legs.
Check out the heavy weapon dude form the 1997 box of CSM:

My squad of Havocs, including 2 conversions. I mimicked the existing CSM backpacks in order to fit the weapons properly. The Nurgle Champion helmet fits perfectly with its sensor array on the front.

Thanks a lot! I'm not that good at highlighting and shading, so the first thing I'll do is get them ready to play and maybe the occasional conversion.

Seems to be a lot of Black Legion love the last few days. I am also working on sum BL, consider me subbed.

I just checked out your Berzerkers. I'm also thinking of a similar color scheme.
At the moment I'm going for a CSM squad with an icon of Khorne, as this looks kinda fluffy to me, too. Maybe I'll magnetize the icon so I can change to chaos glory when I finally get a proper Berzerker squad.

What's your opinion towards CSM backpacks? How do you paint them? At first I painted them overall black and then added some detail, but especially the old ones (on the far right) just don't feel right IMHO and look a bit overloaded with stuff. my last marine got a boltgun metal drybrushed backpack with a little shining gold trimming and golden yellow on the tubes (left), I like this variant much more. the middle features today's backpack in the black color scheme.
hope the pictures indicate this well...

Cool to see some of the old school minis. Personally I think all of the backpacks look good, so I would just go with whichever one you like and isn't too fiddly to paint.

I personally think that all three look pretty good, being a new painter myself I kinda like to see some oop stuff as its all relatively new to me. I also like the yellow on the two on the left, I used dark blue but I like the yellow better.

IMO all of the backpacks look good. In fact, I think the old one on the far right looks the best.

THX!

the yellow is actually just golden yellow with skull white as a basecoat. same for the red gore on the far left one.

Edit: BTW if you like old stuff, check out my colors! some of these are from the early 90's and STILL FLUID! the really old cylindrical ones even had 20 ml, the hexagonal ones 17,5 ml. those were glorious days... (in the background you can see the next mini i'm going to finish, an old champion with a somehow over-sized powerfist!)

Nice, I've got some of those as well which are still good! They just don't make 'em like they used to...

I like everything, but what's up with the lightning? That's a Night Lords thing, and it's really going to throw off just about everyone.. but it does look nice!

I'll use the lightning on some squads only, mainly because I like the look (it gives a bit of a tzeentchian feel) and for distinguishing reasons in case some squads get mixed up during combat.
initially I wanted some kind of a black marble look, but my painting skills are not good enough to execute this properly... plain black with just the trimming is a bit boring, IMHO

He turned out gritty, I do see two things I would fix on it. The yellow tubes on the chest really could use a wash and then some more yellow after, easy fix but that mold line in the last pic wont be able to be fixed without jacking up your paint job. You owe it to yourself next time to scrape the mini clean. Dont take my criticism as a negative, just trying to help.

It's much easier to clean the plastic minis. the older minis, especially the metal ones, used to have a lot more mold lines and little errors. believe me, it was a real mess to clean the bit between the seal and the powerfist...

I'm actually still trying to find out how to make the yellow look cool. would you wash it with badab black or some devlan mud and the accentuate again?

first priority is to get the minis ready for play, further highlighting etc. will follow later on, so this guy will get a clean up on the legs within a few weeks i guess.

I think it looks great, nice and neat, good attention to detail and his gun looks awesome. For my CC I would say that the base kind of lets the model down. Maybe do some darker patches of dirt, a bit of drybrushing, or some static grass, etc to make it look more realistic and interesting.

I also would personally paint the rim black but that is a very personal taste and fair enough if you don't want to.

I would go the badab black watered down and the go back over avoiding the nooks and crannies with your yellow. I also agree on the base comments.

finally i found some time to work on my chaos army again...

since rumor has it that DA and chaos are going to be part of the VIth starter set, i decided to put one unlucky battlebrother as a trophy onto my rhino. he will be held in place by a small chain i got hold of. inspiration struck while i read a short story about ultramarines (the full version of "idaeus' last command" from the CM codex, to be found in the ultramarines omnibus - at least in the german version), where the corpses of a slain assault squad were chained onto night lords rhinos.

To be honest it looks kind of cheesy, the way you have it. The idea is sound but the execution is off, looks unnatural.

Love the stuff you've done up to the trophy on the Rhino. There's a couple of things you may want to consider, such as chopping / repositioning the dead SM to look more naturally draped to meet the contours of the hull, and especially consider *much* smaller chains. Those chains would tie down a Thunderhawk.

Overall this is looking like an interesting thread and I'm subbed. Looking forward to seeing more. LET THE GALAXY BURN!

so many projects, so little time

@Skalk Bloodaxe: yeah, as others already pointed out, the position is not really cool yet... I'm not that good in repositioning and working with GS, so I'll have to practice a little before this model will be finally done. unfortunately these chains are the only ones I have atm

@Squigquasher: at first I was going for jungle themed bases because I have some old terrain as you can see (yes, it's REALLY old stuff... back in 1997 or so White Dwarf came with cardboard-buildings like this!), but since i play at my local store most of the times now, I think i'll start changing the bases sooner or later. they'll look like this one from my ork nob to be seen below (not the best picture, but you might get the idea...).

next project... I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to finish something some day

anyway, a friend of mine got himself a DA vindicator and fethed up some steps while airbrushing and weathering the whole thing. end of the story: he thinks it turned out ugly, I'm a proud owner of a brand new vidicator, ready for some "nurgleing"

Besides filling some gaps I've never really worked with GS, so these are my first attempts:
