Hey there Dakkadakka Boyz and Dakkadakka Girlz, i need your help. Three of my mates and i are creating a miniature wargame and i need some tips. this is what i have so far (be warned this is very rough version and its in dot point)

A war between races main protagonists are Vampires and Humans.

The time set for this is roughly early-mid 22nd Century.

Elves, Dwarves and Fallen Men are some of the other Races.

Deamons and Saints (Angels) are also playable races.

And thats all i have in twenty minutes of Brainstorming. So like i said please help in anyway possible.

Thanks Alot.

tbh it sounds like you watched Twilight, LotR and Constantine and its quite all over the place.

Vampires vs Humans has been done before. not sure about modern elves and dwarves. Angels & demons is possible in D&D if i recall.

I don't think I saw a question in there. Without knowing what you want from us, it's quite hard to give it!

When designing a game (or many other things for that matter) I feel it best to think like an Ork.

Do you have so many weapons that normal people make fun of you being so unrealistic?
-If YES, then proceed.
-If NO, then add weapons.

Are said weapons flashy and over the top, and impractical, yet cool looking enough to even give Final Fantasy designers pause?
-If YES, then proceed.
-If NO, need more flash. You gitz.

For example, a stake flinging crossbow is good. But not as good as replacing your fore arm with an unwieldly gatling gun that fires stakes which have been individually blessed by water poured from the holy grail.

Design your mechanics first, then worry about fluff. Boil your game down to numbers and once you have the groundwork done, then start adding fluff.

This. Regardless of the fluff, your game will only be fun if the mechanics are decent.

Steer clear of the damn vampires and other currently popular crap. You will only get short term interest in your product if you make it.

When making something completely new, you want to create something that's familiar, yet not. Think space marines, they are paladins in armor, yet OMGZ tech, and space magic, and vehicles.

You might want to take a look at the following:

In Nomine
Cyberpunk
Shadowrun

I would refine the idea down a bit though.

If you have two main protagonists Haemovores (MUCH cooler than Vampires) and Humans, the other races should very much be background.

If the Haemovores are magical in nature, that allows you to have Faithful types (summon angels through good magic) and Apostates (summon Daemons the same way), plus a possible blag for the other fantasy races.

For example, the elves have always been there, hidden away, few in number, and have only started coming out of the woodwork in this post apocalyptic ruin to keep themselves alive/steal magic/because their magic is fading etc etc..

Books to check out with this idea would include the Dresden novels (magic critters in modern settng, but mostly hidden) and Dead Witch Walking (and the following books) where nonhumans have been there all along, hidden.

If the vamps are genetic mutants/diseased/ whatever pseudoscience they are pushing these days there is no real blag for fantasy races, and it would be better to keep them and humans as the only options.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
You could also check out D20 Modern, D20 Future and Urban Arcana (same set of books).

The mechanics are a bit fugly, but it;s a good source of near future RPG ideas.

Make the vampires shiny....Just Kidding. Uh, I would put it in a post apocalyptic world. Humans are stranded refugees. This puts the idea of building many different types of humans game wise. Like the different types of Space Marines. Elves are a small race. Just really powerful. Dwarves are tough, but lack real battle skills. Vampires should be the big power. Use lesser minions to do their bidding, hardly coming in to do any work themselves, but when they do come out they wreck havoc. Then have the deamons and angels kind of a side story. Not always joining the other armies. Always off doing their own thing. So just my 2 cents.

That's not a question. It's also not a reason for your game to exist. There needs to be something that your game does better to justify its existence, but your twenty minutes of brainstorming have failed to provide it.

My first suggestion is this: get rid of the elves and dwarves.
My second suggestion is this: get rid of the demons and angels.
My third suggestion is this: get rid of the vampires.

...

Have you managed to come up with any good reasons yet why any of those three suggestions are wrong? If not, reflect on what this means about your design process.
