Remember the days when commanders would be duking it our for rounds and rounds of close combat?
Nowadays commander combats are so boring. ex. "Mephiston/Draigo charged my non-named HQ...he's dead don't even worry about it."
Does anyone ever have any epic commander duels anymore?

Close Combats are shorter in general nowadays which was an intentional change in the newer rules sets.
As cool as 'epic close combats' were, they had a tendency to drag down the game.
Even with faster combats though, my non-SC HQs get in there and mix it up (My SW TWC Lord has tons of epic stories to his name).

If you think getting gibbed by a godlike HQ is new, then you obviously didn't play in 2nd ed. I've had my fair share of epic duels lately, both with and without named characters.

When your only hearing about people who only play named HQ's with eternal warrior, it's only natural that's what you are hearing.
I've played enough battles with captain on bike with relic blade vs emperors champion and emperors champ vs demon prince to tell you epic clashes happen.

Best epic combat I saw was during a 4 way 1500 point game in 3rd edition. My friends Librarian jumped into combat with a Carnifex on turn... 2? I think. Anyway, the combat lasted all game. Every time the Librarian got any wounds, he traded them for the instant death attack and failed it. Every time the Carnifex managed to hit and wound, it bounced off an invulnerable save. A huge battle raged around this fight, which was never resolved, even after things like my Salamanders claiming an extra turn from their trait advantage and his Imperial Fists having their trait flaw extra turn used.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Yes, one piece of wargear on one unit in one army ruined character combat. Yeah, I think they're an undercosted and annoying/unfun upgrade, but they don't totally ruin this concept.

I mostly play footdar with an Avatar. One of my regular opponents plays Daemons.
So, yes, we often times have epic duels between two huge god-monsters where no one else interferes (other than my Farseer who buffs the Avatar).

We still have epic battles. Just don't expext your 100 point chaplain to run with my BT Marshall that's 221 points... it won't be epic.
Last club session we had Avatar vs DreadKnight. Was pretty epic. Same day Logan and Calgar went at it, also pretty epic. Not sure what you want or what you were remembering. I've been around since RT days and only thing that was more epic, IMO, was the 4e SM could have more wounds on HQ units than now.

There are epic battles still, but they just go by quicker nowadays. I don't really see an issue with the speed of it. As it is, Close Combat is the longest part of the turn.

We tend to stay well clear of them for all of our armies....

My no name Shas'el dosen't do to well against no name Captains anyways... I doubt farsight for his points would do any better =[

I tried to get a commander and commander duel against a necron opponent the other day.
My interrogator chaplain in termy armour against his destroyer lord. My terminators vs. his wraiths in the surrounding melee. He said ok when I launched my attacks, then attacked my unit with his commander...
I would like an epic duel, but people do seem less inclined to play them, in my gaming area anyways.

I'm not inclined to them either, if I can't win them. I want all dueling to be a complete steamroll.... like today, when I send Khan, a Libby, a Champion, 3 Veterans with SS/ LC, and an Apothecary all on bikes into close combat with Creed and his command squad... basically they were a speed bump... he never even rolled a die.

My first game with Necrons......
Overlord with his two Royal Court hommies (both Lords) makes his way over to Logan Grimnar and duke it out for a few turns. Logan killed my Lords, but later falls to my Overlord's Mindshackle Scarabs, which caused him to attack himself as his retinue (Wolf Guard I think) were both killed in the previous combat. Anyway, after Logan falls, one of my Lords gets back up to RP and he and my Overlord move on to smash more SW skulls. I'd say that was pretty epic, especially for my first Necron game.
Yeah a lot of people say Mindshackle Scarabs is a little undercosted, but I figured I'd try it for myself and see. I suppose it won me the combat.

Real story: I once tied up Abbadon for four turns in close combat with ten SM scouts. Twice his deamon weapon turned on him, once he rolled ridiculasly bad and crushed only 5-6, and then he finished them off. Fortunately for me the rest of the game had gone in my favor, and Abbadon was to far away to effect anything. Epic... for me at least
