Okay this is going to be a random thread for all of you imperium fans, for the lowly lover of that lone guardsmen stalking an ork through the suburbs, and the commanders of those battle hardened nuns with fire fetishes all the way to those stary-eyed fan-boy of the hulking space marines in tactical dreadnought armour, we all have one thing in common, we love the imperium one way or another in a sense otherwise why would you collect them?

But what i want to know is why you collect the armies of the imperium, personally im a bleeding heart for humanity and an Armageddon complex, you know the type, everything is coming to an end be it a giant asteroid, space bugs, traitors, heretics, mutants.... a lump of space cheese and humanity is standing its ground and the last men just save the world kinda thing, for example
Spoiler:
battle for LA
is a fine example of this! but there is others others of course such as aliens or Armageddon, deep impact etc etc but you get my point, but I'm interested in why you fellow imperialists collect the forces of humanity, is it for the fluff? a special piece which inspired you a novel or the stories in the codex's, rule book(s) white dwarf? or is it the models or the look of things no matter how silly you think it is i'm quite interested in to why people do collect them be it simply because you fell in love with the boots all the way up to because you love the fluffy sides of things, but if you do reply, please also post what armies you collect/want to collect because its easy enough to say "i love the fluff from -insert generic book here-" but it could contain guard, marines, sisters etc so please add what army(ies) you collect

Imperial Guard:

Quite simply: Because nothing beats the satisfaction of killing a Terminator with a lasgun.

Everything else (almost...Not Tau) in the 40k universe is a badass killing machine: But the Imperial Guard infantry are just puny humans with cardboard armour and flashlights. So it's just more satisfying winning with them. And even if I lose it's always a joy sending hundreds of guardsmen to their death.

I hate the Imperium - it's a fascist, racist killing machine that views humans as expendable cannon fodder.......But that's also exactly why I love it and love playing Guard.

Space Wolves:

You grow up on the ice-world of Fenris not really having much idea that you are merely pawns in a Galactic Empire. Your average life-expectancy is 35, if you are lucky, and the planet's islands and continents shift every year under horrific tsunamis, earthquakes and lava flows the size of a small moon. The only thing you can really eat are giant Wolves and Elks the size of elephants, and every time you try to sail anywhere to find new land after the annual-apocalypse you get attacked and eaten by Kraken the size of a city. The only way to escape this hell-hole is to prove yourself in combat in the hope you get noticed by the mysterious 'Wolf Preists' and take your place amongst the 'Gods' (aka spez mehrens). Therefore, you basically become an ale-drinking, red-meat eating Viking warrior since this is your only opportunity to get any enjoyment out of your short miserable 30-year life or earn your place amongst the 'Gods'......

Don't care if they are 'overpowered' - they are Vikings...in space. And that just makes then awesome...

Edit: Also, you gotta love how everything is 'Wolfed up': Tactical squad? nah...how about Grey Hunters? And Rune Priest's Wolf of the living wolf wolf psyhic wolf powers of wolfdom. Wolf Lords, Lone wolfs, wolf guard, wolf wolves. With Wolf Claws and Wolf Banners....

Imperial Guard cause, well, I was inspired by the ranks upon ranks of brave, bold and ordin.... feth it, I just love all the sweet tanks. The IoM may not be the most progressive faction, or the most advanced faction, nor the most competent faction, but they have a lot of cool stuff. Titans, Baneblades, Valkyries, More tanks than you can shake a Pulse Rifle at, More APCs than you can shake a shuriken cannon at, Creed, and lest we forget all the awesome infantry support weapons.

I like the Imperium for the Guard, who are obviously the most relatable of the human factions. Especially those of the Gaunt's Ghosts side of the fiction, rather than the pseudo-german Death Corps, sometimes terrorist suicide bombers, of overdone Rambo Catachans. I like that feel of a sci-fi World War II trooper. But then i also like the facve of the Inquisition that things like the Gaunt's Ghosts or Ravenor books relate, where you see a hero and his band of loyal friends fighting the good fight.

That being said, I like several of the alien races just as much as long as I can make them individual, like Kroot merc armies, or Craftworld-as-Corsair Eldar.

I'm almost always happy to side with the "human" faction in any given game/universe, and 40k is no exception. I've got Ork and Chaos armies in addition to my Guard and Marine armies, but I'm an Imperial at heart.

Aside from Orkz, I only collect Imperium factions. Mostly because the Inquisition is the very best part of the entirety of 40k fluff by miles, with only the hilarity of Orkz coming even close.

Also, because Krieg and truescales are cool.

Because none of the alien races are friendly. Even the Tau practice mind control. If i have to be mind-controlled, then it's better to be mind-controlled by a Human. All alien races out there have it out for each other.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

My own Codex Marines because they're like Dark Angels without all the grimdarkness.

You too?

I started off with Space Marines in 3rd edition, Dark Angels to be precise. I loved the background for the Imperium and the Emperor in particular. When I started my second army, I switched to Imperial Guard because of the tanks, but soon feel in love with the T-Shirt armored and flashlight armed badarses that are Gaurdsmen. I started Daemonhunters to add to my IG army (becasue of the allies rule back then) and loved the whole idea behind the Inquisition. Almost everyone in our gaming group has a marine army now, but I am the only one to collect strictly IoM armies, I guess making me the unofficial Imperium Fanboy of the group. Thinking of starting a Sisters of Battle army when the plastic models come out so I can have an example of every Imperium army.

I don't like what Order Malleus/Herectus did on Post-First War Armageddon, they also try to prosecute the Space Wolves even though the Space Wolves clearly support the Imperium yet they ignore the Marines Malevolent who have done far worse things. I hate the Codex Astartes because it run through fear. The Salamanders and Imperial Fists were forced into supporting it or they would be hunted by the boys in blue. I also find Order Malleus' and Herecticus' disregard for civilian lives to be disgusting. They are both pushing the Imperium into the Dark Age and it disgusts me.

As far as IoM armies I collect and play include dh and da.

I originally got into dh and cd at the same time and enjoyed the good vs evil deal. I am a huge fan of epics, heaven vs hell, and that sorta thing. Plus I do like the looks of my old metal termies.

Reason I picked da is it allowed me to have an all termie army with a nasty bits. Though it was close between them and the bt. The final straw ended up being looks. I dig the bone and dark green.

The enemy of my enemy is a bastard so lets kill him too.

It's Ordo, not order. The Inquisition is one of those organizations that does some good and some bad. They don't like the Space Wolves because they have mutation of sort in their ranks, but the fact that they're still Imperial and scary as hell keep the Inquisition from prying too much. The "kill everyone who might have been tainted by Chaos" approach hasn't come up in fluff much since, since it doesn't make sense to kill anyone and everyone who could potentially be a veteran. As for the Codex Astartes, everyone was forced into it but it's more or less a rulebook on how Space Marines should fight. Even then, its rules get bent frequently, even by the Ultramarines, and is more of a guideline than a hard set of rules.

I like the imperium for the Guard as well, while I dont agree with the Draconian and Totalitarian methods of the imperium (or the Guard for that matter) I understand the necessity they face.

There is something about the Guard that just seems to mean something almost romantic to me. By that i mean a man, just a man, no power suit no almighty psychic powers or holy powers standing against the impending darkness.

The whole 40k Universe is like a futuristic Prose-edda with the gravity of it all seeming almost total despair but the glimmer of hope shines through as a single guardsman holds his own against all of the most foul things in the universe; orks, daemons, creepy/rapey space elves, stuck-up space elves, scary super monsters (nids) and insane demon worshiping humans.

For the record i dont really think SM are humans, they are "children of man" rather than men assuming they were all created in some vat somewhere. I find little honor in a hulked out super-creature defending mankind when you can take a regular man with nothing but the gut in his belly and the steel in his sac and throw him up against the same things.

3k+ IG

Chimeras > rhinos (course then again piling a regular squad out of a chimera usually creates a scene similar to Omaha beach during D-Day)
