I read a discussion a while back regarding the evil looking guardsman and chaos marine in the bottom right corner of the IG codex. Someone mentioned at the time that GW puts little clues in their artwork. Now with rumours of Chaos in 6th plus possible traitors in the box set.....hmmmm.....

The IG book is WAY too old to point to anything in th future.

Traitor Guard are nouthing new fluff-wise, though there have been rumours of traitor guard in the next Chaos codex.

I am sure descions are made years in advance so the age of the codex is not really an issue...

Although, latest rumors are that the new box is going to be Dark Angels V CSM with plastic cultists.

These are just rumours though.

I wouldn't read into that whatsoever. Like seriously, wouldn't read into that 1%. They don't put hints in artwork, but there are occasionally hints in photography, with new kits hidden in the background.

There is a hint with the last few WDs. If you put Jan and Feb issue side by side, the spines form a part of a picture. That looks quite like the cover of DA codex.

Is it? All the rumours I heard was that the new box is going to be Dark Angels vs. CSM with "something non-powerarmoured". Could be cultists. Could be traitor guard. Could be some form of henchmen or servants dragged along from the Eye. Could be something completely new. Could be anything really.

That's different entirely. That's a multipart image that's pretty explicitly being used to tease a release. Even then, a codex cover of a Dark Angel standing bolt upright and doing nothing would make for a very, very boring cover.

Traitor guard are pretty boring IMO. They'd just be infantry squads/veterans with a few sorcerers thrown in. I doubt they'll feature heavily, though a couple of options in the Chaos book would be nice.

I can't help but think that if they did add cultists or renegade guardsman into the Chaos codex, they'd never be used, with Chaos Space Marines already having so many interesting options in terms of troops.

A simple image means nothing unless we can piece them together somehow. Just because there is a strange guy on the cover of a codex isn't evidence of chaos guard being in the works.

That's a good point. Assuming they're broadly the same, i.e. plaguemarines are hard-as-nails, khorne are deadly in assault, the only place for traitor guard would be is as scouts. They'd pretty much have to be WS:3 BS:3 S:3 T:3 I:3 though, being human, so no matter how many special abilities you gave them they'd still suck.

What about using them like the gk's? As in a henchman style (warbands and such) you could pull guardsman from offworlds and with the blessings of the various gods have a pretty tough/cool unit on your hands. So a kind of twist on the imperium's guard.

Traitors/heretics/cultists are meant to be a meat shield unit. They're hordes of cheap crap to tie up the enemy guns and troops until your good stuff shows up.

It seems to me that the CSM codex does need a cheap meat shield, maybe a exploding ability similarly to the DOW games?

I've always liked the idea of some kind of human bomb abilities like in Rogue Trader. I think at the very least Penal Legion should get them, and if they fail a morale test one of them explodes (S3 small blast) to restore morale or something similar.

There is the Tau Failsafe Detonator; though as the name implies, it's a last-resort rather than something they'd actually plan to use.

Traitor guard is a pretty integral part of the Chaos fluff (just like traitor titan legions). There was also the Lost and the Damned force in Codex: Eye of Terror. With that said in regards to the OP its very unlikely a hint for what would be at that point 3 or 4 years in the future is a stretch. There are all sorts of coincidences and bits of hints in many other more contemporary sources.

From all the rumors the traitor guard will be a big part of the new Chaos book. This is very welcome especially since they play a major point in at least two of the traitor legions fighting styles.

Though I do wish that they'll be in a re-release of Lost and the Damned, as part of the point (at least in my opinion) of playing LatD is that Traitor Guardsmen are normal and CSM are super strong (relatively speaking, from a Guardsman's perspective) where as Traitors in a CSM codex means that T4 Power Armour is the norm and not the exception. Having a CSM on the field is a blessing.
