Hi,

Does anyone have an ideas for making portals? Or does anyone has pics of some?

Thanks I appreciate it.

Portals like this?

This is a paper template I found on the Heroscapers website more than a few years ago. Works great on light to medium cardstock. If you're looking for a webway portal for use in a Dark Eldar army, it's probably best to find an old blast template, prime it, and paint it up to look cool. Or use a 2" foam ball cut in half, painted liberally with white glue, then prime and paint it.

Like this:

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I wanna try and make a vertical standing portal that has no boarders. it seems to me, that if a portal was going to just open up in real space then it would look like a tear or a hole without no decerable edges to it

Then make something out of Greenstuff / Milliput / whatever modeling medium you prefer and carve out ripples in that manner.

Also - for Dark Eldar Portals, Pringles lids works BRILLIANTLY.

Well I'm far from very artistic. I can duplicate something that I can see and that's really about it. The pic I sent is fine but I don't really know how to make those ripples.

I'm still trying to find more ideas though. I appreciate the pics you did send.

I've thought about, also, making portals out of water effects but I'm not sure how ambitious I can be with my skill sets.

The ripples in the linked one look to be simple broken concentric circles carved into a disc of modeling material.

To do it see-through, a sheet of PVA Glue / Water medium / whatever (you can mix in a wash, some paint, or maybe food colouring? to make it a translucent colour) and make a disc out of that by creating a mold of some sort, then filling it.

That was done using resin.
Most likely spare resin from a cast, poured into a pool, and then drag a toothpick through it as it is hardening.

That's how I would do it anyway.

I tried making one with greenstuff, and I'll see how it comes out.
But, I want to make a few different ones and see whats better.

So I don't have resin or no know where to buy it. But, I have water effects. What would the mold be made from?

Water effects on wax paper would work. Or hey - hot glue. Carve out the holes with the tip once you have a puddle you like.
You wouldnt make a mold, but just pour the extra resin on a tray. Never mind if you don't have it.

Hot glue would work better than water effects, and be a lot cheaper.

but if i wanted to make a 3 inch tall portal on a 40mm base and maybe work on having a necron warrior warlking through it, then I dont think hot glue will work so good.

Its shaping up to look like I'm going to learn how to make a mold and work with water effects

Well I think if I go with a round portal instead of oval then I open up my chances of finding a lid or something that will work. Like, a coffee can lid. Would that work? Will the water effects stick to a plastic, or rubber lid?

You'd probably need to grease it with something so it doesn't stick.

But Hot Glue would work fine I think - it's quite tough once dry again.

but, will the hot glue really be clear?

It'll be foggy, you'll be able to see shadows through it.

well I think i'm going to take all your ideas and try em, see what I like. thanks

also, what you guys think about shape?

Circle vs. Oval vs. a jagged scar (like a tear in space)

for all your portal needs!

you could also do a jagged thing spewing fire in all directions and a very smooth plane in the middle. You have to be up on your painting though to paint the scene on the otehr side.

you could also do the eldar thing, i anticipate that method taxing you though

That pic isn't loading

The fire idea would be cool but defeinetly taxing

fire is easy, it's all in the painting. Just grab some tinfoil!

What I would do:

get a picture of something that looks eye-catching as a potential gate opening like a nebula/blackhole/etc. If you want a green effect you can play with color balance with photo editing software, etc.

Something like this:

( trim around the green to desired shape)

make two color copies of it and glue them together back to back (size/cut them to scale as needed).

Build a mold box, etc. (this can be done numerous ways including by simply using putty on wax paper to make a desired shape to fill with water effects/resin).

pour a layer of water effects (tinted to your color of choice) down and place picture onto it. Then pour more over the top so that the double sided picture is encased on all sides with the resin/water effects.

Let dry.

You should end up with a gate that has some visual appal and a sense of depth...

As a large portal, I use this Stargate from Stargate Atlantis action figures (works perfectly):

For small portals I use these by Black Cat Bases (your choice of base and colour):

Speaking from experience - the stargate portal is a pain in the ass to get.

Get a ripply water sheet. I got one of those for use on a converted ghost ark I've got planned. I plan to cut it to shape and recast it to have a green tint, but I think they also come in clear.

I'd use an oval sheet of plastic, the cover both sides with either greenstuff or liquid stone and then add riddles on it.

I saw quite a neat version using a slice of amethyst crystal. It was a small diorama of a DE warrior coming out of a portal and getting maimed by a fire warrior. Rather neat.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

So take a ripply water sheet, made mold walls for it, poor liquid effect in it and then the sheet of paper with a printed image.

The ripple sheet will give me the ripply effects. Nice!

I wouldn't give it neat edges unless it has a frame of some sort. If it's just sitting by itself it may look better to be sort of uneven like it is actually just punching a hole or ripping through realspace.

You can imbed models in it, color it, paint a piece of board or card behind it. Just takes some imagination, but you can totally get the effect you want and more.

I don't plan on going with a perfect oval. I think I'm going to use sprew and make a jagged, tear like, outline. And try that. The water ripple sheet I find interesting. I worry about the water effects sticking to it.
