It looks like your thread over on the PP forums got deleted, and since I did not get a chance to respond over there before it got deleted I will quickly address your concerns about my statements here...

As you recall I expressed that I felt your work was sloppy for a commission painter, and I offered you the suggestion to work on your brush control.

I feel that it is a general expectation among commission painters that there is a degree of professionalism and cleanliness of work that is presented to the general public. This is important as the images/work you present will be taken as the quality of work you provide, people are picky about what they spend there money on, and they want to be "wowed!" by your services in order to spend money, I dont see that in your work, it is table top quality, I would have a hard time justifying spending my own money on the quality I see here.

Here are 3 suggestions that I could offer that may help you ramp up your business....

1. Brush Control- A clean looking paint job is always going to look good. By brush control I mean smoothness of application, straightness of lines, and details being painted. These 3 things will do more for a mini than a dynamic base, a cool conversion, or choice of colors...apply it well and the mini will look good.

2. Professionalism- Learn to take criticism from your peers. My statement of your work being "sloppy" is not a personal attack on you, it is my opinion on the work that I see. People are going to tell you they dont like your work, you need to be able to process that information, and continue to develop your own style...Accepting only the positive criticism while dismissing the negative comes across as unprofessional and defensive...2 things that do not install confidence in others to give you their money. Also, under the umbrella of professionalism I would suggest that you be a little more critical of your word choice and usage. We are all guilty of grammatical errors, but take some time and edit your post before posting them.

3. Picture- It is very likely that the true quality of your work is being diminished by the photo's. There are many articles here on Dakka about taking pictures and making "light boxes" form cheap materials. Take a look at some of these and educate your self on how to take a decent picture, it will speak volumes toward professionalism and the quality of your work.

So there you have it, 3 constructive suggestions on how to improve on what you have. From one commission painter to another, I wish you luck and look forward to seeing more of your work.

Ashton

Yeah I'm not feeling the OSL at all. The blue you used looks the same as space wolves grey, so it essentially looks like the models are unfinished. It needs to be less pronounced and brighter

my recomendation would be to go read the recent article that goes into detail about painting OSL technique on a grey knight terminator. It is on dakka somewhere, i just cant find it. I remember seeing it fairly recently., someone point to a link for this?

it is a fantastic article, and i think would be a great starting point.

these space wolves look sad man, they need some work. you dont want them to be sad do you, they will need to go to therapy and get counseling, and maybe go on antidepressants if the painting does not improve

I think you missed the main point of source lighting, mainly the"source" of the light. In this case there isn't one. Usually it's from a power weapon or lava base giving off light that would reflect off the body. I feel you may be getting OSL confused with zenithal highlighting/ color modulation. Simple airbrushing does not equal OSL.

My advice would be to paint in the details you are missing ( eyes, weapons, shoulders, symbols and such) as you normally would on any mini. Once that's done. Put some black wash into your airbrush and use it to shade the lower parts like the undersides. This is also a great control exercise for your airbrush skills. Do the weapon blades last. That's when you will apply the true OSL off the weapon glows.

I think this will give them a more completed look.

Hope this helps.

I agree with the above posts I thought they where just unfinished minis.

Airbrushing random spots of colors/=/ OSL

Mould lines showing as well.

Definitely better than some though.

Somewhere in the dark...

I really like your painting style. It manages to look clean whilst at the same time 'dark' and 'gritty'. Not sure if that's what you are going for but I like it - makes the models look more realistic rather than just well painted models that look like well painted models.

Is the red pauldron supposed to be glowing? If it isn't, you have some lots of overspray on the marine body and backpack. Same thing with the the yellow one. My advice; tape the pauldrons to a paint stirrer and paint them. Now you don't have to worry about overspray or trying to mask little areas on the model.

Indeed. I am just now playing with Using the airbrush for Squad Mass painting. Getting a feel for what is possible and what is not.

There is a bit of over spray on the models. lol.
Problem was that the models were already assembled.
The next sets will be done separate from the models.
Thanks for pointing it out. I will go back and touch up a bit Looking at them now its hard to see much of the OS.
Pics really tend exaggerate the level of these things.

No problem, dude. I'm no pro with my airbrush but I have picked up a few tidbits here and there. I don't know if you are aware, but there is another trick you should look into: Silly Putty. It make for a phenomonal masking agent. Better than blue tack as it doesn't not stick as easily to the model.

I should also mention that I enjoy your tanks (even though I don't like SW). The only thing I would add are the little details on the vehicle. Paint the rivets, emblems, other things of that nature... It doesn't take much time and it helps the model stand out.
