Just to make the US (or at least my homestate of Oklahoma) seem even crazier when it comes to an armed citizenry, I present this story of a man walking into the local Wal-Mart and attempting to steal an M4.

FROM STAFF REPORTS | Published: March 23, 2012 Oklahoman
Muskogee police responded to Wal-Mart in Shawnee Thursday night where a man had broken into a locked gun case. About 10:15 p.m., Everett Rowlands, 35, of Wagoner reportedly attemped to take and load an M-4 rifle, according to police, but the rifle had a gun lock. A Wal-Mart employee took the rifle from Rowlands, who was unable to load the weapon because of the locks. Rowlands then took a Mini-14 rifle fro the gun case and fled to a storeroom.

Employees assisted officers in evacuating the store, while officers searched for Rowlands. He was later arrested in connections with several charges, including grand larceny, reckless handling of a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, obstructing an officer and two felony warrants for knowingly concealing and withholding stolen property. None of the firearms were operable because all were equipped with gunlocks.

I would like to give a special mention to the wonderful reporting by our local paper, considering that the M4 is a military assault rifle that can only be purchased under very special circumstances. So good job there .

Wal-Mart does sell AR-15s, which is a civilian version of the M16 which is related to the M4, so my guess is that the AR-15 is the rifle in question here. But now we know that if we are planing on robbing Wal-Mart during the Zombie attack we need to bring some tools to remove the gunlocks.

Newspapers tend to not be very accurate when it comes to reporting things relating to guns, for the most part the general public don't know much about guns or the military in general. Or at least here anyway, where guns are much rarer and people seem to have panic-attacks every time they're mentioned....

One thing that sticks in my mind - In the Daily Mail (Yes - I know this paper is a pile of ) - There was an article on soldiers in Afghanistan using mine-clearing equipment to detect IEDs, the photograph was captioned "A British soldier in Afghanistan using mine-clearing equipment" The photograph, quite clearly, showed a soldier using mine clearing equipment.

He was dressed from head to toe in ACU and carrying an M4...

IN THE SAME PAPER (might have been a few days in-between, but the point still stands) they had another article about the new British MTP camouflage...

Evidently, research is not required...

Walmart also has tools, like hacksaws and drills with metal cutting bits.

Oh, and one of the zombies in a walmart vest stumbling around the sporting goods departmnt may have the keys.

Truthfully, reporting that an AR15 is a M4 is closer than most reporting I've read.

Uhg, I want to spit blood when people call magazines clips.

But at least the good part in the OP story, is that WalMart did the right thing, and had trigger locks on their weapons. Nice work WalMart

What's funny is I do in fact own a number of clips.
I have Garand clips, SMLE clips, 5.56 Nato Clips...none of them are particularly high capacity.

Indeed, clips do exist, but magazines and clips are not the same thing, not by a mile. Hence why I want to spit blood.

Well, my old Drill Sgt would be on your list KC, He also used the term clips. May have been a ancient holdover to the use of actual ammo clips for the M-1. they kept telling us the "Banana Clip" or 30rnd Mag could be used instead of the 20rnd Straight clip mag.

There's a funny picture on /k/ somewhere about the Media's portrayal of guns. Essentially, every assault rifle is a "AK47", every pistol is a "Glock"

Not to be too much of a prick but the "pistol" mag on the left is a 22lr magazine 40-50's era rifle probably a Marlin M80/Ranger 103-2. The scale on the 20rd STANAG bothers me, next to the 30 rounder it looks more like a 7.62 mag...but its not.

Ah, it looked smaller than the M-1911 magazine, Never had or fired a .22, thanks for that tip. As for the BIG Box next to the AK-Mag, likely the whole set is different sized images photo-shooped together. After watching the video that was at that site, I see how much faster I could have reloaded my magazines with a stripper-clip. (When i had a H&K)

The best way to load a mag short of stripper clips is a LULA. they are a worth every penny. The pistol LULA is not nearly as good...and yet still awesome. putting the last 5-9 rounds into glock 33 rounders is a total PITA, with a LULA it's easy.

it's funny how the m-16 was labeled ak-47 and the ak-47 was labeled m-16.

Well if you want a decent deal on a new shotgun, or a cheap little .22 rifle, they really are tough to beat price wise
The one nearest me has a pretty badass Mossberg tactical 12 guage Ive been eyeing hardcore for under $400 bucks. Elsewhere Ive seen the same shotgun for around 6

Walmarts out here are the only retail stores that sell firearms in Michigan, as far as I know. I hope they keep it up, because they usually have the best prices on ammo next to Cheaperthandirt.com, and I dont have to wait for shipping

But does that mean that they are made in China too?

Bam! No. Even when Chinese firearms were permitted Wal mart didn't sell them. They did have a great deal on a Beretta semi auto I hope that comes back. Mostly they sell cheap American shotguns and rifles...to be honest not a whole lot of desirable guns there above 22 cal. But sometimes they mark down a gun, once it has that red tag it's probably a good deal.
