Those look really nice. The black skin is well done. Nice green, too.

thanks for all the kind words

aside from the bases (which are not great, I know), any suggestions for things I could be doing differently or improvements I can make on this general painting scheme?

I'm working on a Salamander force as well, but have been unable to get the green just right. What did you use, if you don't mind sharing? Also, I think your bases look just fine.

@phillaco: happy to share

I based my color scheme off the salamanders army pictured on pg 106 of the current space marines codex. over the course of painting this squad, I tried out 3 or 4 different methods. here's what I did for the more recent models (sergeant and missile launcher marine), which I feel came out the best:

- prime white
- base coat with a few thinned layers of GW goblin green (1:1 with water/flow-aid mix). keep adding layers until you get solid coverage; it takes me 3-5 layers
- highlight with 1 or more layers of thinned GW scorpion green (1:1 with water/flow-aid mix). I end up doing 2-3 layers where I want a brighter highlight (top, sharp edges) and just 1-2 elsewhere
- for shading, I apply a black wash (GW badabb black or anything similar) directly to the cracks and crevices I want to shade using the tip of a very fine brush rather than applying it all over the model.

of course, the color names are all different now that GW released their new line of paints :p

the green comes out a wee bit lighter in person than in the photos.

Great start. The highlights look great on the green and black. I dont know what criticism I could offer, they look like a typical, well painted salamanders army. Nice work

an unfinished model posted in the P&M Showcase? dakka would tar and feather me :p nope, he's all done. if you're asking because of the black head, that's part of the salamanders fluff. I do agree that the skin looks too much like the other black parts of the armor, though. I've got some ideas for correcting that on future models

i personally think the face of the sergeant is too plain... i know the have blackened skin skin but i think it looks a little plain (could be the photo)

i think some highlights build up with browns would look awesome and make it more convincing.

other then that, i love all the armored ones!
maybe freehand some flames on random locations?

@DijnsK: how's this?

I'll be adding flames to more models in the future (shoulder pads and/or knees), as well as more scripture detail on the armor.

I agree with you on the face. I need to work some deep browns in there to make it stand out more from the black armor. I'm working on another sergeant right now, so we'll see what I can come up with. not a lot of good reference material to work from, sadly. GW needs to kick those smurfs to the curb and feature a *real* chapter :p

The dread is looking fantastic. I would temper the amount of flames you use on the models though. I found that with my Salamanders flames got boring really fast and too much of them begins to look bland rather than cool. You might want to consider mixing in some flaming meteors, lava, which are both common Salamander motifs. Check out my gallery for some ideas on how I used different "fire" based iconography etc. http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-28365-8188_Salamanders.html

true, maybe a black greave with a lava motive for a change would be very cool
