i was thinking of running generic (as in paint job) WoC but want to use mixed marks. do you think it necessary to reflect which unit has which marks?

Chaos players commonly paint on the color the mark portrays.

red if mark of khorn
blue if mark of tzeenth
green as nurgle
pink or purple as slannesh

but to make it easier and reversible, i would just paint their blade as the color

I painted mine blue. To indicate if they are a different mark I have khorne and tz banners that i swap in when they are not marked the color that they are painted. If that makes sense

I think you need to indicate it to your opponent at least in some way. Even telling them. It's like if they are armed with GW or extra HW. It's a purchased buff he needs to be aware of as it may change his strategy.

And realistically, they would look incredibly different if they were Khorne warriors or Nurgle and the enemy would likely be able to know that.

There's an alternative way - you could write "Khorne" on the frontside of your movement tray(s) and then paint any god you wish. I'm currently doing this to my WoC army, and so far no one has complained.

(I paint my warriors and marauders with a Nurgle theme but I never use MoN.)

Paint red trays for khorne, pink for slan, blue for tzeentch, and green for nurgle. The trays are rather cheap and easily swappable between games.

Generally its a paint scheme.

You could have your unit and just have a couple of Banners painted up with the appropriate mark as you are running that day. Just swap banner bearers.

My Tzeench army is painted dark purples and blues to make it clear.

Khorne is red, Nurgle is greens and/or browns, Slannesh is usually pinks, light purples, and flesh colors.

If you are running mixed marks you should, as courtesy to your opponents, have some way of distinguishing between marks.

If its as simple as "All the guys with Halberds have MoK and all the Shields have MoS" then that will probably be good enough, but if you have 1 unit of Halberds with MoK and another with MoT then you should definitly have some distinguishing feature on them.

I painted my WoC in neutral collours and simply used the latest banners relased from GW, it helps to tell them appart. And I am not forced to paint red or blue all day.

But all in all you need to tell your opponet what they have

thanks so much all.
my reason for asking is because i wanted to do a tzeentch force to have guys with shields and the ward save bonus but at the same time i wanted to run a unit of khorne marauders. fluffwise they historically dont like to play together and i didnt like the idea of painting a mixed color force.

Tzeentch and Khorne arn't enemies. Slannesh is the enemy of Khorne. And Nurgle is the enemy of Tzeentch.

Khorne just doesn't like magic, which is only a small part of Tzeentch's mojo.

They certaintly wouldn't be best buddies, but they could certaintly work together.

Paint them normal and have a god-specific banner for each god you want to run-just magnetize the banners to the pole. Easy solution.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

GW still sells banner tops for each mark.
If you want to switch around, I'd pin them.

Honestly, with talk of a new warriors book, just start stocking up on nurgle. Nurgle can't suck for another addition can it??? Oh wait...

I paint all my Chaos Undivided colours.

I'll own this army for years and I'll be damnned if I'm repainting everything because I change my mind.

So I magetized the banner tops. My army is still all painted black and dark silver, but if I want the mark of Khorne instead of Tzeentch, I just swap the icon on my banners.

I had a lot of spares from my Chaos Space marines and stuff like that though.
