So. How to start VC or HE? This is my first WHFB army, depending on which one I choose. Here're the ideas I have for my armies, but I have no freaking clue what to do with em! Any advice at all would be very helpful!

Here's my 1000pt VC army list idea:

Just so everyone knows, I also own some of the contents of the old VC battleforce. So, I have a corpse cart with a necromancer on it, a few zombies, and a few ghouls. Sadly, no skeletons.

CC Vampire or Wight King , backed up by a necromancer in a corpse cart(?), a wall of zombies and skeletons to annoy the enemy. (Possibly ghouls?) Lots of Hex Wraiths, Grave Guard, and Black Knights.

And here's my 1000pt HE army list idea!

Huge blob squad of spearmen lead by Korhil (possibly?), a mage, lots of special units such as Phoenix Guard, Dragon Princes, and White Lions. All backed up by a few archers.

First army I would choose the elves, they allow you to participate in all aspects of the game, you learn movement and psychology (which are probably two of the biggest differences from 40k) as well as playing a very flexible army with lots of tactical options.

Hm, so HE is a good beginners army?

In the dark recesses of your mind...

I would say high elves are a better choice for your first army as well. If for no other reason than you will have far fewer models to have to paint and lug around with you to games. Plus you get Teclis.

There really isn't a massive difference in terms of Beginner/Difficult army. Warhammer is more of a deployment/movement driven game. Mastering the mechanics of the game system will affect your win/loss more than the army you play for the most part.

The point Praetorian raises is a good one also as VC play differently than most armies on a fundamental level. This can be a good thing but it is helpful to understand how most armies play to be able to exploit their weaknesses.

I started with both of these armies though and they are quite fun to run alongside each other as their differences make for a completely different experience.

HE does seem better, as the army does seem to be able to do anything I would need to learn.

As stated, VC just run fairly differently in terms of base gameplay, and as such are more difficult to jump into. HE, on the other hand, play incredibly straight-forward. Plus, you'll rarely have to question who's going to strike first when you get into combat . Less thinking, more killing!

HE have better core IMO. Plus, Legolas. Legolas was pretty bad ass, and he was an elf.

Not to be that guy, but "High Elves" and "better core" shouldn't be in a sentence unless there's a negative or unless you're saying someone else has better core. It's truly atrocious.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Ghouls>High Elf Core.
Vampire and high elves have some similar builds... In that both armies want to spend bare bones minimum on core.

Ghouls a very solid, and a single large block is usually all you need. Zombies increase like rabbits, so you don't need to start with many to end with boat loads.
That means in most games, you want 30-50 ghouls, and 2 or 3 smaller units of zombies. Then spend the rest of your points on the good stuff (non-core).

High elves have a similar situation. One good sized block of spearmen/seaguard, and then smaller archer blocks to fill out the 25% requirement.

I've yet to see a vampire/high elf build that wouldn't be stronger by taking less core.

Personally, I think high elves is a better start. It's easier to adjust to opponents not using all the rules than it is to adjust to most opponents using rules that don't apply to you.
Getting a feel for how fleeing and redirecting works is critical for warhammer. Unless you play vampires where initial postion and numbers is more important (as you can't ever flee, for any reason).

Mind you. The high elf fighting in 5 ranks and re-rolling to hit becomes so mutch better if you can boost the S with some magic!

Unfortunatly that means you are not boosting your swordmasters/phoenixguard/white lions.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
High elf 5 row with re roll + soulblight/okkmans mindrazorenchanted blades of abaian/wysmans wilfform or probably some other spells make them so mutch better. It could potensialy be 51 attacks. That is a lott. But they do need magic suport.

Already chose High Elves boys.

Mostly because they seemed like a better "beginners" army than VC.
