Hey all!
Just got a copy of Fallout: New Vegas. I haven't had any of the other Fallout games before so this is a new one for me. Been fun, very addictive. I'm at work on 3-hours sleep (which hasn't happened because of a video game in a long, long time).
The tutorial was woefully inadequate, and the book wasn't a tremendous help either. But I've managed to stumble my way though the early quests so far and am SE of the starting town at some RR crossing. Anyway... to my point...
Is there somewhere safe I can dump all the ingredients and parts I've been collecting? I'm totally maxxed out in my weight allowance and the game at non-running speed is unplayable! I started with like... 4 or 5 sets of armor of various types... is there a reason to keep them all or can I dump the lesser sets. Needing some serious advice on burden management. I don't want to get rid of all the things I'm finding as making things is part of the fun of the game... but I can't function any more because I'm carrying so much stuff!
Please help!
Thanks,
Gits

Here's a list of safe houses that I know of
Novac (you need to buy a key)
Ranger Safehouse (idolized with NCR)
Your appartment in New Vegas
Centurion Safe House (idolized with Legion)
And that's all I can remember.
How did you max out your weight allowance early game? That shouldn't be possible.
Unless you were picking up any odd pieces of junk that you came across.

A useful trick in any elder scrolls or fallout game is to divide the items sale value by it's weight and then compare the worth/weight values of your items to decide what is worth keeping and what isn't. Generally it's not a good idea to pick up everything. The first safehouse (where you can store items without them despawning) in the game is in new vegas which is a few hours into the game. The one in novac is only for one night IIRC.

Actually, Novac is permanent. You never lose the key.

In that case use novac, it's about an hour before you reach vegas from what I remember.

Plus, it takes more loading screens to get in & out of New Vegas. Novac is just plain convenient.

Well, I have half a dozen guns, ammo for them, two armor sets, and a bunch of stuff but it's all ingredient type stuff... not just random junk. However... not knowing what's really valuable maybe it's just junk. Are the various meats you get from critters worth anything more than just meat for eating?

Well, it depends. If you don't cook them they'll often give you a nasty side effect. Why 2 armor sets? You only really need 1

You only really need one or two weapons too.
Hoard all the ammo you find though, it sells for a good price and is weightless.

OK guys, that helps.
I keep running out of bullets, so I've been switching guns to stay armed. I did just dump several sets of armor... just didn't know if it was given to you at the beginning for a specific purpose. I think I have light metal at the moment. Been trying to repair some of my guns, but the best ones I've only found one of so they're slowly degrading.

If your having trouble with ammo switch to precision weapons or simply go only energy weapons.
Try and get power armour ASAP.

imo energy weapons were not worth it in new vegas simply because they were much more rare while normal guns where all over the place.

The safe in the gas station in the town you start in is also a totally safe place to store things (if you take care of the guy inside, either by killing him or helping him escape). It never resets, and there's a mattress nearby for sleeping.
It's not the best home base. But, it's definitely the most convenient for a when you've just started out.

There are 3 places where you can find dead Brotherhood guys (third floor of REPCON HQ, boomers test fire area and outside hidden valley), take their armour and repair it together. Whats more you also get audio logs allowing you to start the brotherhood quest-line at hidden valley. One your initiated you get power armour training and you gain access to the brotherhood safe house which has a set of normal T-51 power armour (and a load of other useful stuff like a shop that sells high end gear, also remember to choose the elder if you dont want to piss off the NCR at the end). Use your brotherhood armour to repair this and you have a perfect condition set of power armour and you don't have to worry about NCR guys shooting at you.

Sell everything that's worth money, drop anything that's not. You really don't need a safe house unless you're a compulsive hoarder.

That made me smile... very mercenary attitude.
Well, I went to the jail & cleaned it out so I've got some energy weapons now. Thank heavens for the flame thrower... I never would have survived taking out the gang bosses without it. Got called all kinds of names by some poor kid with busted up legs... kind of amusing actually. I still have way to much junk... but I'm trying to pear it down a bit & keep myself mobile. How common are the books that permanently increase your skill levels? I'm debating picking up the perk that lets you double the points you get when you read one of these, but I'm not sure if it's worth it (as I don't know how frequently you get pick perks... not every level... every other level?).

Dead Money is fun if you want a challenge so difficult it verges on not being fun.

Dead Money was like the Point Lookout of F:NV.
Both were fun, but after your first run you only went back if you needed a Weapon or a piece of armor from there.

My bad. Meant went back as in another play through on a new character.
Freaking HATED Point Lookout. All the Swampbillies did 35 damage to you, plus whatever the weapon hit for. Had to be rocking in the Anchorage Power Armor just to make it possible to complete. On Normal.
What really stunk about Dead Money was losing your gear. on my Glorified Heavy Weapons Platform character, I was rocking a Magnum and the jumpsuit until you fought the Big bad at the end. I hated life for about 4 hours while playing Dead Money. My Sniper cleaned house(because of said Magnum), and my crazy melee guy did ok, but if you needed armor or heavy weapons, May god have mercy on your soul. Now the other DLCs for NV, while hard, were not Dead Money/Point lookout hard (AKA rage inducing if you just go in there not knowing what will go down.) So the other DLCs, were still playable with almost any build (since you kept all your gear. Life is generally easier when you keep what tools you've scavenged to survive.) I love Dead Money's Story and would go with every single character without hesitation if I got to keep my gear before entering.

I loved dead money actually. It had that survival horror feel that I was looking for.
The problem with the Bethesda FO games is that they are extremely soft on the player compared to the older games. Dead Money and OWB fixed that.
