I tried a game with a few people a couple of months ago, after quitting it years back, and I agree that it's changed, for example I believe Change of Heart (or one that has a similar effect anyway) is now a forbidden card...

I just don't really have an interest in it anymore, especially after casual games that felt very uncasual, it's just not fun to face a deck that can only lose against a deck of similar power made for the same purpose; utter and complete annihilation.

In some ways, it echoes 40k in that even casual games seem to have taken on a competative edge.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I play once in a while, although for me the fun comes not from winning... oh no, my fun comes from making the weakest deck that can still annoy someone and see how long i can last with it. If only you had seen some of the death glares that have been sent my way.

My friend plays a deck like that, but he runs Final Countdown, so he can actually win with it, his deck is just filled with cards like gravity bind, penguin soldier, man-eater bug, negate attack, and other things that make you want to kill a baby.......

Ya, things like Change of heart, and pot of greed are on the forbidden list.....

And ya, just like in 40k, you're going to play a "TFG" that takes it WAAAAAAY to seriously......making the game not fun for anyone......

That is why I hate card games; Oh the card we printed to make money is too powerful? BAN IT!

Wasn't Change of Heart one of the really Iconic cards in the tv show that started it all, anyway?

Probably was, yeah, as was Monster Reborn (although you can still use that) and all those original cards that I have tons of and won't be able to use if I take it up again (unlikely).

Change of Heart, Monster Reborn and Pot of Greed were pretty iconic and in practically every deck since their printing.

I don't play all that much anymore but I still have my old deck.

Change of heart, and pot of greed were just too good for tournament play, Monster reborn you can still have, but only 1.

If the purpose is to win, and something makes it easy to win, and it's printed enough to allow everyone to have it, what's the problem?

I thought you could only have one of it anyway? I guess there's still enemy controller.

The problem is, it makes it easy to win, and if everyone has it, no need for them to buy other cards......Kinda like how GW will make a bad unit really good in the next codex.....

Also, the card was just broken, just take control of 1 monster with no cost at all......Say someone goes and special summons Black luster soldier: Envoy of the end, and you can just change of heart/brain control it, might as well just quit at that point.........

But you could only do that in your turn and most people would have some sort of counter. I used to have shift just for this basically.

Had a deck back in highschool, had a lot of fun. Then they release a list of cards that are now banned, and half of my deck is gone.

I will echo that it's nigh impossible to take a noncompetitive Yugi deck once you've built even one. You can't really make one fluffy or themed as there's no story.

I used to play very competitively and qualified for nats a few times but that's about it. It's probably the game I was most "successful" at. The decks themselves are so much more streamlined now it's crazy. I remember when the only named gimmick that worked was Gravekeeper's.

TBH, Yugi has pages of errata and ban, but it's 50x more rules-solid than any GW game.

rainbow dashing to your side

I played it when I was about ten and last year when me and a mate were feeling nostalgic :3

I find it silly how competative it's got now -_- another mate who still plays spent £300 on a deck which has already payed for itself due to tourny play

what ever happened to being king of the play ground for having a "blue eyes ultimate dragon" :3

I might also add that the game really died for me when I could no longer play my one turn win deck which had 3 sets of exodia and a crap ton milling cards >:3

They sucked for a long time and still basically do. Black wings are them, just better. The main issue was that the sisters were a dead draw before you got Elegant Egotist, and you had to get one of your basic harpies for that to be useful. Every other support card is way too situational. Basic rule of thumb in Yugi is that if a card requires another card and doesn't immediately win you the game, that card "sucks."

I love my Harpie ladies, I play them with style, I admit that they kinda sucked at first, but once Harpie queen and pet baby dragon came out, they became a lot better.

Also, harpie lady sisters is just a terrible card, I never run it.....ever......

I run 3 Harpie queens

3 harpie lady 1s

2 elegant egotist

2 hunting ground

and 1 pet baby dragon.

the rest of that deck is dragunity......

Ah Yugioh!... Good times. God cards anyone? Without any official rules or anything. I had a kickass deck at one point, but then I somehow broke it. I kinda want to rebuild it better, I know a few guys that would play without needing to win.

I used to play when every fricking card wasn't an effect monster and cards like Summoned Skull, Dark Magician and Gaia were legit cards that could be used but now every card has an effect and you have synchro monsters in addition to fusion monsters :L

I started playing again a while back, using my old Kaiba deck, against a couple of friends - we don't worry about "forbidden" or "limited", it's more fun that way, and we're only playing casually anyway - obviously we want to win, but we're not too bothered if we get a rule wrong or forget to draw etc...

The Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged series on youtube is great as well
