Well, I just got back from Hobbytown with the entire "Yellow"
GW line. (The one in the online guide.) My impressions:
Averland Sun on Chaos Black
This stuff is thick...terrifyingly thick. I was afraid to avoid thinning, and it went on pretty well. Two coats though DID NOT completely cover the black. There were still some places that needed touching up. Overall I was happier with it than Iyanden Darksun.
It took me about 3 coats of thinned paint to get the full coverage I wanted. I was terrified to use this stuff straight outta the pot, but with a clean brush like in the Citadel video, it seems to paint great now I'm on yellow space marine #15.
***Edit***
Tried to run this stuff through a spray gun with my normal glaze medium ratios and all the like. Didn't work great...ended up thinning and doing multiple thin coats. Really loving the color as of the third marine.
Casandora Yellow
Stuff is brilliant, but not right for Imperial Fists
IMHO. It pools right where you want it and works like a dream. Shoulda gone with Nuln Oil or whatever. Trien Nuln Oil...nothing great. Back to Casandora and liking it now.
Yriel and Flash Layers
Well, honestly I was scared to use them straight out of the pot, but once I relaxed and just trusted the paint while thick, it was just fantastic. great coverage and great colors.
Hexos Palesun
The drybrushing compounds are weird, but just works really well. Takes practically tiny amount to use this stuff...really like it.
Lamenter's Glaze
Wow...just brought the whole thing together
Conclusion: Idiot Proof, but compared to Army Painter Daemon Yellow, base paints and dip, I'm still having a heck of a time making really great Imp Fists. As I'm a masochist, I think I'll keep trying until I get it down. I will post more later.
The new
GW line is really meant to let the inexperienced hobbiest put a decent army on the table in not a lot of time. It will take some getting used to, but overall a great change to the line. I really liked it. I'll try to post gallery pics tonight.
