I really can't help but feel this.

Everybody I know who plays 40k, their armies (or armies) seem very "typical" of their general characters and personalities. Very matching, or complimenting.

Do you feel you are, in any way, similar to your chosen army / armies? If so, how?

Well considering how many people say some variety of MEQ, I'm not sure.

What I am sure of is each persons army that they play, they play it because they like an aspect of it. Please keep in mind bandwagon players do not apply.

No, bandwagoneers like an aspect of their army as well. They like the newness and awesomesauceness of it.

Well no... There can be cross-over similarities.

LOL! I'm not talking quite that literal! Just similarities, however vague - whether it's basic traits, values, appearance, strengths... stuff like that.

I've ended up modelling (and playing) bits and pieces of nearly every 40K army at this point, which in itself says more about my attention span and personality than the armies themselves. That said I have found that people who spend extensive time modelling their armies, often find a way to inject their own personality into the army as opposed to the generic army saying anything about the person.

I think that one could say that anything an individual chooses to do (consciously or subconsciously) provides a window into their personality and character.

I mean, let's see: in real life I'm a middle school teacher which means that I've sacrificed the hope of a truly lucrative career to help make the world a better place by serving in a blighted urban hell-hole. In 40k I play Tau (servants of the greater good) and Blood Angels (heroic warriors holding the line against a cruel universe intent on destroying everything they hold sacred).

So.

I'd say it means something for me.

Of course, I also play Lizardmen, Cygnar, Everblight, and ALEPH so maybe not .

Well seeing as I am a blood-thirsty Vampire that has visions of my ancestors death and its driving me insane with rage.

Yea I would say that the Blood Angels fit my personality nicely...

Not sure how that equates to High Elves, but YMMV...

I think you'll find that given the complexeties of human personalities, you can find similarities between nearly any person and any reasonably well described ideal. This is one reason personality tests are always so eeriely accurate.

Clearly every person picks their armies for personal reasons, but I doubt that it really provides much insight.

You can pick even a relatively "bland" army like tyrnaids and start listing all the possible characteristics it espouses:
Single Minded
Destructive
Collaberative
Strictly Heirarchical
Brightly Colored
Foreign/Alien
Adaptive
Hungry

I mean, can you think of anybody you know that doesn't meet at least one of the characteristics?

@OP no it really doesn't, but everyone seems to like to think it does -_-

If I play Empire or Space Marines " woo you like knights in shinny armor "

If I play Blood Angels or VC " Twilight! "

If I play Dark Eldar, Sisters of Battle, Eldar " well thats expected, girl power! "

If I play Tyranids or Orks " why do you want to play with that? "

If I play with skaven " you like little furry critters? " ok well atleast this one is correct

I'm a weird one then. I play GK, Daemons (KHORNE !), Tau (Farsight), IG, and Sisters for 40k. In fantasy I play Daemons (Khorne once again) and VC!

So that means I'm a bloodthirsty, self hunting daemon hunter, who fights for the greater good while purging the heretics among the infinite numbers of my brethren. I'm too lazy to add my fantasy stuff.

I would have to say that armies reflect their players to an extent but a lot of people play armies that they feel fit them but others would not agree.

I would say the composition of their army / list says more about the players than the faction itself.

I'd say How you play armies says more about the type of player you are.

Almost all of my lists are shooting based, even my Nids.

My space Marines have no dedicated close combat units. Closest it gets is CC upgrades on Sergeants and my Comanders.

Another characteristic of my lists is i tend to avoid the "Medium" units in my Codexes. I typically avoid using Rhino hull based tanks and Terminators. It's almost always power armoured marines and Land Raiders. With my nids its all Big T6 units or T3 units with very few T4-5 stuff. Usually just the gene strike squads and Venomthropes.

I dont tend to upgrade individual units in my army greatly, I typically run as bare-bones as possible with my special units and get only the essential upgrades.

In all my armies the fast attack options are my least slots ever taken.

I was late to start playing 40k with my buddies, but as soon as I saw the Catachans, I immediately got a battleforce. I love the look, (A bunch of Rambos and Solid Snakes from Metal Gear), and also their philosophy of guerilla tactics, physical toughness, and determination. I can definitely see my buddies first choices in their personalities as well. One friend plays Space Wolves because he's chronically been a power gamer. Another plays Orks because he's very direct and blunt about tactics, but ironically very booksmart.

So you told the SD boy to stay classy. I'm sure he's NEVER heard that one....
