Everyone know's that special characters can be either good or bad, or even outclassed by a basic lord kit. I was wondering what everyone thinks is the best and worst special character of your codex. And yes, you have to point out the best of the best even if all your characters are complete

For example.

Best of Ogre Kingdom: Golgfag Maneater, I think this one is the best of ogre kingdoms due to his special rules and points cost, the ability to gain from 10 to 120 points of magic equipment on a kit like this, not to mention being able to to specialize depending on what army you're facing. Not to mention he's relatively cheap, has near Tyrant level stats, and even if he just gets 10 points of gear, has a pistol and double hand weapons.

Worst of Ogre kingdoms: Bragg the Gutsman, this fellow is worse than taking a standard bruiser, he has the same stats barring +1 strength, double the cost of a bruiser, and his only special rule comes into play during challenges, which he cannot force the enemy to do.

Worse of LM
Tehenuin the prophet of sotek.

Just...no.

He's 25 pts less than a slaan, and about as durable as a scar vet. Sure he's lvl3...but he can only take beasts, which I don't think works that well for LM.


Best of LM...

I got nothing. Really, the whole special character range of the LM army is fairly lacklustre.
Chakax maybe? I dunno, he does seem fairly decent if you stick him with temple guard.

Best of High Elves: Teclis. Full stop.

Worst of High Elves: Probably Alith Anar, he's more or less a scouting Bolt Thrower and seems to be intended to buff the worst choice in the entire book. Shadow Warriors still aren't worth it though, especially seeing as Alith Anar probably is going to be your General.

For Daemons: Best Fateweaver no question. Worst: Skarbrand hatred for everyone yay. Hm no.

For Tomb Kings: Best Settra Chariot beast yes! Worst: Apothos - I1 seriously?

For Dark Elves

Best: Crone Hellebron

Worst: Malekith (sorry guy, you're cool, but you are this horrible hybrid of combat and caster)

For Wood Elves
Worst: Sisters of twilight, No use... No point on using them
Best: There is nothing like that in our army book....

It's a hard choice for most, because some characters can be so useful in some situations while in others....useless. So for me, a good character is someone who is an all around balanced character.

With that in mind, I'd choose Orcs and Goblins, and Best would be Grimgor. I know he isnt in the new dex (I dont think?) and all SOC characters are pretty much null and void now, but he was awesome.
worst? probably ahzag. I've never been a fan of flying mounted characters. All the eggs in one basket syndrom is great until you get that one unit killed.

Kroak. The amount of damage that guy dishes out is just stupid. Keep a skink priest around with forbidden rod and it gets ugly fast.

The king's not bad, he's just way over priced for what he does, I'm also tempted to say the fey enchantress is better than the green knight, despite his cool factor

Same could be said for Greasus of the ogre kingdoms, but it still means he and the king is pretty bad to be so over-expensive.

The more I think about I realize that King Louen whats his name is so far over priced its not funny

Yah it is really sad. I too really want to like our king but his mount is like double the price of a normal hipo

Dwarfs:

Best: Thorek. Ancient power on a 3+ with a one-per-game reroll is awesome.

Worst: Going to actually have to go with the king. Sure, he's a total house, but at 780 points, he's hard to play games with and when you do, he's usually all of your lord points.

That's just my opinion though, ymmv.

Wood Elves:
Worst: Orion, 575 points for something most kitted out heroes can beat in close combat.
Best: Sisters of Twilight, Two Nobles with magic bows for the price of one and they both fight in challenges, admittley the best of a bad bunch though.

Dwarfs - I have a soft spot for Bugman - nice to be able to scout with a decent character.

I've never fielded Thorgrim, because I can't see the point. He looks extremely avoidable.


My favourite character of all time was Valten with Ghal Maraz. Still alive if he passed a Ld test on the turn he died. Auto-wound and ignored AS with D3 wounds for each unsaved. He was a beast.

Empire:

Best: Balthasar Gelt. Metal loremaster with +6 to his casting rolls, plus a 3+ ward save against people shooting him? Karl Franz is my second favourite for his ability to hold the line with an 18 inch Ld 10 bubble. Honourable mention goes to Luthor Huss, because he's ****** ******* Luthor Huss.

Worst: Markus Wulfheart. For 20 points less than his rather high price tag you can take a cannon that wounds monsters on a 2+ and does D6 wounds.

Vampire Counts -

Best : I'm gonna go with Vlad or Krell. Both pretty nasty in their respective ways.

Worst : Konrad or Isabella.

I really like the green knight, but all the Bret characters are good. The king is a great character, he is just prohibitively expensive. The Fay enchantress is awesome because she can use any lore, has the chalice that lets you use a bound spell from LoH, and you don't have to pray.

WoC best: Id go for Archaon, but Wulfrik is awsome too (chosen target irrefusable challenge with him hittin 4 attacks of S6 at I7? Yes please!)

Archaon and Gaulrauch are pants for the same reason the Bret King sucks. They cost a arm and a leg

Beastmen, Slugtongue, this guy is a Death-Bray-Shaman on roids.

Worst...That Ungor hero. Doesn't really do anything. And costs a chunk.

Beastmen
Best: I'd have to give my vote to taurox. Dude rips things apart like they weren't there with flaming attacks that ignore armor saves. Minor draw back with that 1 hit one kill rule he has but as long as you pass your armor save you should be good.

Worst: Like everyone else, i'd say ungrol. Just....no...

I have to say nearly every unit in DoC is worth their points as a special character. Khairos, the Super Unclean One, Skulltaker, Masque, blue scribes, changeling, super doggie. Only the mega bloodthirster isn't and maybe the plaguebringer tallyman, because plagues aren't that great.

I have to think they are going to lose a lot of those wacky special rules when they are redone.

I gotta disagree with you here Johnny 110 pts to give that 6+ unit of knights armor save rerolls is worth it alone. Although I can of see your point the other SCs are ok to good but their costs other than Apophas is too high for my tastes.

Dwarves:

Best: Thorek, for obvious reasons.

Worst: the king, mainly due to cost. He's good, but cannot be fielded in even a 3000 point game.

Ogres:

Best: Golgfag. Although not as good as our generic heroes, he's a bit better stats-wise, and can be tailored for each game before it starts. Problem is, unless you roll max, you are paying a steep premium for those magic items.

Worst: Bragg. He costs 50 points more than a kitted bruiser, and does less.

Lizards:

Best: I would have to say Gor-Rok, for a couple reasons. First, he is the second cheapest character the lizards have. Second, he makes his unit stubborn. Third, he's probably the only one of our characters who is over-costed by less than a hundred points.

Worst: So many options. I'm going to have to say Tik-tac-toe. Over 300 points for a two-wound, T3 model.

I forgot he gave rerolls. My problem is he has no save.

Aphoros has killed many a elf mage or necromancer.
