The title says it all...
Do Black Templars still have an edge among the newer codices out there?
If you think so, please explain.
If you have a minute, please review these army lists: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/443473.page
Thanks.

Terminators w/ 2x CML's, TH/SS's, and tank hunters.... Yes, they can be competative. Look up Just Dave's battklereps for good examples of competative play using them!

In my opinion, the Black Templars have some of the best Elite slots in the game.
They can give their normal terminators 2x Heavy weapons in a 5-man squad AND give them the Tank Hunters special rule for fairly cheap.
They can also give their Assault Terminators the Furious Charge special rule.
On top of this, an army-wide Prefered Enemy special rule is insanely beneficial.
I wouldn't call them a top-tier army, but I have tons of fun with my Black Templars and even my losses are usually close games.

By a fluke of FAQs, yes.
Typhoons and CMLs give them the edge in my view, then they have some good units that also work well with them.
As an assault army they do not do for me particularly.
6 or so typhoons[in pairs only one model needs cover, they do need cover], then some CMLs, most likely preds and some form of cheap shooty troops forms a competitive amount of shooting.
i'll comment here that for your two lists I would get less troops, more typhoons, and the assault list get another 1 or 2 potms vindis to distract from the charging rhinos and raiders.

I appreciate the good feedback! I'm somewhat reluctant to buy more termies/typhoons/vindies, as they may get a new Codex soon (as the rumour goes).

Perfectly reasonable. I'm holding off on a Chaos army for the same reason.

I was just at Kingdomcon and Dave Fay's BT's placed in the top 10. I think that says it all.

I krak missile spam still effective in today's meta?
BT actually do it better than space puppies. Double CML tank hunting tactical terminators are more durable than long fangs.
One thing I don't get is they can field a 5 man troops squad with a plasma gun or a lascannon at a great price, or at least army builder says they can, yet I never see lascannons being fielded.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Says it all, they suddenly became all the rage when the new FAQ came out, winning tournaments all over the shop. Recently faced them at the British Doubles Tournament alongside SW. A horrible combination, they can take such good things for low points compared to normal marines. They get the Emperors Champion and silly amounts of missiles, Neophytes can be used for wound allocation in troops as well. Lack of Librarians is a loss but they have so much other stuff.

I do this. It's an easy way to spend ~100 points. I have also done the 5-man job with a Plasma Cannon and a Plasma Gun.

I just found thier codex in our club room and I'm reading through it. It seems that the army-wide spacial rules that they can get with the Marshall (or whichever HQ) can give them such an edge. Army-wide preferred enemy? Are you kidding me?
And then as others have been saying, the 5 man LC is brutal and the cyclone termies are better that long fangs imo.

Take the necessary emperors champ
3 5 man termie squads with tank hunters and missiles
2 20 strong infantry blobs of death
3 machine spirited vindicators
Add 2 chaplins for the squads to be fearless, and then fear nothing you could face. Vindis which will always fire unless destroyed, 12 possible lascannon str shots against vehicles and blob squads that can and will kill anything.

I feel that a Marshall is needed to have the option of shooting something other than the nearest unit, as a Ld 7 test is pretty easy to fail...

A Marshal is needed to provide all of your squads the LD10 needed to keep your LD8 from running off since you have to check for losing 1 model instead of 25%...

I've seen a lot of list with just the EC, seems a bit risky to me.
