Subject: scaled cloaks?

Morphing Obliterator

hello dakka,
I'm having a bit of a dilemma. in keeping with the salamanders fluff, I've been thinking about adding "drakescale" cloaks to a few of my models to make them stand out more. the problem I'm having is that what GW passes off as "scale" looks like nothing of the sort to me. GW's vulkan he'stan model is the canonical example:
(image by warpseer, not me, and used only for the purposes of showing the detail on the cloak)
the texture on cloak looks more like the pebbled hide of an aligator rather than the scales of a reptile. we're talking dragon skin here so I expect scales, not lumpy hide! anyone have ideas on where I can find scaled cloaks that would fit marines and/or termies? and yes, before anyone else mentions it, I know I could try my hand at GS-ing my own cloaks. I just want to know if there are already existing alternatives before I go down that road
cheers,
v

this came up when I searched the dakka gallery for 'black ark corsair':
(not my work)
if these are representative, it's still the same lumpy-hide texture that the he'stan model has. no overlapping scales :(

What I would do personally would be to try to find something with the type of scales you want, at the correct scale (er, size ratio )
Then, make a mold of it with Greenstuff or Instamold, and make your own cloaks, ya know? I expect you could find some scales of the proper size at the toy store. My local Michaels art store has a bunch of little plastic toys and there are dragons, dinosaurs, alligators, etc.
Hope my 2 cents helps you in the right direction

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one? |

Good idea fenrir, and the easiest way to do it.
The problem is that its difficult to sculpt that kind of scales at the proper scale (1:72) that look 'right', not too big for the model.
Corsairs are in plastic now so you shouldn't judge entirely by the old moulds.

The plastics are similar tho, but are worth a look
And the scale should be 28mm Heroic

I've gathered the separate cloaks I could find on the miniatures market, and also the tips on making them on your own:

You're going to have a problem if you stick to GW products; even the GW dragons had that same general look. I can't think of a single 'scaley' GW model that DOESN'T have it.
Look to alternate suppliers for that overlapping scale pattern you're looking for. GW won't have what you want.

I'd hope the OP found appropriate cloaks for his project after four years...
