Hey everyone, this is one of my periodic threads on how I manage the gallery and what expected when people post images. So...

Sideways and blurry images are deleted

I know that some phones, tablets and other devices correct orientation but when the image is posted it comes out upside down. So please please take a look at them before they're posted. Unfortunately there's no autonotification when images are deleted so you might find it's just gone. By far these are the things I spend the most time deleting.

Blurry, dark or otherwise impossible to see images get deleted as well.

Off-topic images are deleted

Dakka is at the end of the day a wargaming forum so things that are off topic get deleted from the gallery.

Pictures of real life weapons and warfare are fine, war-game related humor is fine, pictures of people playing games are fine.

Sometime we have to go pretty far afield, for example that Tokyo subway picture was to show what Imperial transit might be like. In those cases a good title for the image will help.

Pictures with no models or artwork have their voting disabled

Pictures of your workbench, your bitz box, fellow gamers are all fine. But please disable voting on them.

Please tag and title

No one will see the most awesome titan ever unless you put in a titan tag.

And without the title many people might not realize this picture shows an invisible pink unicorn.

This is a family wargame

Appropriateness is always a problem with this game, one that GW itself wrestles with. Some years they happily put out topless models, other years it's all PG13. And of course this is a game where blood and skulls are practically mandatory.

The basic rule of thumb would be, what if your mom saw this?

Topless toy soldiers is a bit embarassing, but generally OK. No one seriously thinks people get off on 1" tall neekid ladies or laddies. But sexually graphic ones, live people or realistic artwork would not be. Remember a lot of people surf from work and we don't want to lose posters because they can't risk clicking on our threads and gallery.

In conclusion...

Think before posting images. Is the image good enough that people can see what it is? (an if you're having trouble check this tutorial - http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Debunking_the_Myths_of_Miniature_Photography).

Is there anything to vote on in this image?

Can anyone find it?

Will it get someone fired?

So there we go, please post questions, comments and feedback here.

There is also a general rule that no more than six pictures of the same model should be posted.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Does that include the process of building a model?
Sometimes, you need more than 6 pics to explain the whole step by step.

I've stored a few hundred images here, but none seem to get deleted. What am I doing wrong?

Should images taken with another less capable device and lacking good advice how to take good shots:
- a) replaced with better ones, maybe heeding the article linked to in the OP
- b) kept, if people voted on them or delete if nobody cared until now.
??

Yeah, once we started deleting bad images (upside down etc) the number one complain is boring images, 8 pictures of the same space marine from different angles.

Several WIP shots is fine, but if you want to showcase a model from all possible angles:

Make sure it's worth it.
Consider a montage.

Oh and I forgot to say

You can help

If you see a bad image, tag it 'delete'. I go through from time to time and erase those.

Once an image is approved, no worries. No one expects every photo to be perfect, just acceptable. Now if you want to go back and rephotograph your army with a better camera, better lighting etc, go ahead. Better photos may get more views, more comments and more votes.

Another thought, be really careful about using hateful symbols, especially those of nazi Germany. Yeah, yeah historical... but outside that narrow context I tend to assume anyone looking to recreate Hitlers legions has at least a passing admiration for them and their deeds.

Well, since the topic was freshly posted, this is an opportunity to ask something I'd wanted to ask for a while.

Is there a way to replace an image? That is, rather than delete it, to upload a new image that overwrites the old one's URL, thus no breaking articles or tutorials of days past it's linked into.

As I've gotten better at photography, I'd love to take better images of things to upgrade* my old images but wouldn't want to break some random tactica someone wrote some that used one of my models in it.

One thing you might want to add - make sure the photos are in RGB - I had several photos that I wouldn't upload properly. I gave up on them - but later realized it was because they were CMYK.

Yes - I know - there's no reason to use CMYK uploading to Dakka. But some of us work for print publications and process sometimes dozens of photos a day and then start to subconciously switch everything we put in PS into CMYK...

I know how that feels all too well.

Just post new ones, generally inferior pics will just sink and be forgotten while the better ones will rise.

Sorry to drag this thread from the grave, but I just finally saw this and wanted to comment on it.

Gallery uploading doesn't allow for pictures to be replaced, however, if you're talking about pictures in the article system (the wiki) this can be a reason to do direct image uploads to the wiki (instead of just uploading them to the gallery and then linking the pics into your article), because the wiki does allow you to replace an image with another simply by uploading it with the same image name as the previous one (which can be a curse too if when you name your picture its something super simple that other people may accidentally repeat themselves).

Of course, this won't help you for pics linked to your forum posts, but I just thought I should mention it since you asked.

Thanks - I had no idea that functionality even existed. I'll give it a try!
